Year Reception: What We Are Learning 17.04.26

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

This term our topic is Plants and Growth. Our focus book this week was Jasper’s Beanstalk.

It has been an incredibly busy week of discovery in Reception! From the intricacy of planting a bean to the heavy lifting of water across the playground, the children have been diving deep into nature, mathematics, and engineering.

Here is a look at what we’ve been up to:

After learning where seeds and beans come from, each child planted their own runner bean this week.

We discussed what a plant needs to stay happy: Water (but not too much!), Light (Sun), Space to grow

We’ve placed our plannted beans on the windowsill so we can watch the "magic" happen underground as the roots begin to push out.

The children have been 'seed detectives', exploring a variety of fruits to see where they hide their seeds. they have practised using scientific words such as core, flesh and pip.

In our maths sessions, children have been exploring repeated patterns. Creating these patterns help the children to develop logic and reasoning skills that are the foundations for coding later on!

The children had great fun using the pulleys to transport water this week. Reaching up and pulling down builds the muscles in the shoulders and upper back. To pull a heavy load, children must plant their feet and engage their abdominal muscles to maintain balance, preventing them from being pulled toward the chain.
