Reception: What we are learning W.C13.10.25

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

Our focus book was Elmer:

.Here is what we have been up to: The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. They revisited the first 16 sounds from Set 1 to reinforce their phonics knowledge. Please continue to read with your children and work on these sounds with them.

In Topic, we have been learning about diversity. We have celebrated our differences and understood that we all belong!

In Maths this week the children have been learning about patterns. They worked hard to continue the repeated patterns. The children also worked in pairs to create a repeating pattern with action images. Well done Reception for your hard work in Maths this week!

“Be bright, be seen”

We spread awareness of road safety and ensure the children can easily be seen when near traffic.

Next week, as part of our Expressive Arts and Design curriculum, the children will be making wands linking to the story Room on the Broom. To make the wands we will need sticks and dried leaves. If you go out on a walk, please do collect some and bring them into school for us to use before next Friday.

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Parent Meetings

The week after half term, we will be holding parent meetings to discuss how your child has settled into nursery. Over the next week, your allocated time slot will be sent to you via Evidence Me. We will also post your appointment time on the nursery door, so please remember to check there.

Each meeting will last no longer than 10 minutes. If you would prefer a phone call instead, please either email us or inform a member of staff at the nursery door in the morning.

Why We're Wearing Bright Colours Today , Be Bright, Be Seen! 🌟

Today at Broadford, you may have noticed the children looking extra colourful and it’s all for a very good reason!

As the darker mornings and evenings of autumn and winter set in, it becomes much harder for drivers to see pedestrians especially little ones. That’s why we’re taking part in ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’, a day to raise awareness about the importance of being visible and staying safe near roads.

Wearing bright and reflective clothing can make a big difference in helping children be seen by motorists. Something as simple as a brightly coloured coat or a high-visibility strip on a bag can greatly improve visibility during the school run.

Here are a few easy ways to help your child stay safe this season:

  • 🌈 Choose coats or accessories in bright colours

  • 🎒 Add reflective strips to school bags

  • 💡 Use fluorescent armbands or stickers on darker coats

  • 👀 Wear reflective clothing when walking or cycling in the dark

And it’s not just for children, adults should be visible too! The more we all stand out, the safer we’ll be.

Thank you for joining us in supporting this important safety message and for helping your child shine bright today!

Outdoors, the children have been putting their physical skills to great use by rolling large tyres around the play area. This activity not only supports their gross motor development but also encourages teamwork and perseverance. We have seen lots of smiling faces and determined efforts!

In the playdough area, we’ve been getting creative with pasta to make face shapes. This has sparked wonderful conversations about the different parts of our face, helping the children build awareness of their own features while developing fine motor skills and imagination.

In the art area we have introduced tracing paper and pumpkin templates to support the children’s early writing and drawing skills. These fun autumnal activities are helping to strengthen pencil grip and control, building the foundations for confident mark making and writing.

In the snack area, we’ve been practicing using cutlery to spread butter on toast. It’s been a great opportunity for the children to develop their hand-eye coordination and independence, not to mention enjoying the delicious results of their hard work.

Our young artists have been expressing themselves on a large scale outdoors! Using rollers, paintbrushes, and powder paints, they’ve created wonderful masterpieces while experimenting with colour, texture, and technique. It’s been messy, creative fun, just as it should be!

Thank you for your continued support. We’re so proud of everything the children are achieving each week and love sharing these moments with you.

Wonderful workshop!

This week, Little City brought the magic of imaginative play to our school, turning classrooms into mini worlds where children could explore real-life jobs, from firefighters and hairdressers to vets and shopkeepers! The excitement was contagious as the children threw themselves into their roles, donning uniforms, solving problems, and running their own little businesses.

It was a hands-on roleplay experience that sparked creativity, built confidence, and gave the children a wonderful glimpse into the grown-up world,  all through play. The joy on their faces said it all; they absolutely loved every moment and were still chatting about their 'jobs' long after the session ended!

This immersive roleplay supports their personal, social, and emotional development as they learn to cooperate and take turns. It also encourages communication and language skills through storytelling and role-playing conversations, while fostering physical development as they move around and handle props. Most importantly, it nurtures their imagination and understanding of the world, key foundations for lifelong learning

🎈A Magical Balloon Journey in the Nursery! 🎈

This week, our nursery turned into a land of imagination and teamwork with a very special visit from… magical balloons! These weren’t just any balloons—they were a bit cheeky and loved to bounce around! So, we invited the children to become little explorers and work together to help the balloons travel safely across our playroom.

To start the adventure, we put the children into small  groups, to build those all-important social skills.

The mission? Guide their magical balloon through an exciting obstacle course using only their hands—no kicking allowed! The children had to gently tap or push their balloon along a path filled with challenges, which sparked lots of laughter and cooperation.

Along the way, our adventurers faced:

🕳️"The Cave" – where the balloon had to roll through a hoop on the ground.

🏔️ "The Mountain" – a tricky cone to navigate around.

🌊 "The River" – a line to float the balloon over, followed by a big jump from the children to get across!

🍂 Exploring Autumn Colours: A Celebration of Browns, Oranges, and Golds! 🎨

This week in nursery, our creative corner was full of rich, earthy tones as we explored the beautiful colours of autumn. Inspired by the changing leaves and the natural world around us, the children had the chance to dive into painting with browns, oranges, yellows, and reds.

We set out a selection of autumn-toned paints in separate pots, giving the children just a few colours to focus on each day. This allowed them to really notice the unique shades and how they could be blended to create something new.

To help bring their seasonal scenes to life, we provided a range of painting tools:

  • 🍁 Chunky brushes for bold leaf shapes

  • 🍂 Thin brushes for fine branches and lines

  • 🌾 Sticks for adding texture and natural patterns

It was wonderful to see the children experimenting freely, mixing colours together and watching with wide eyes as browns appeared through blending. With gentle guidance from our adults, they were encouraged to notice how red and green or orange and blue could magically become brown — a real “wow” moment for many!

Our team also modelled different techniques and supported the children in describing what they saw:

“That looks just like the leaves outside!”
“It’s like muddy boots after a walk in the park!”

We praised these creative observations and celebrated each new discovery.

⚖️ Outdoor Maths Fun: Exploring Weight and Quantity! 🪨

This week, our outdoor area became a hands-on maths zone as the children explored our tuff tray filled with stones, bowls, and weighing scales!

This open-ended activity was not only a chance for sensory play but also a brilliant opportunity to develop early maths skills through real-life, practical exploration. The children enjoyed scooping, sorting, and weighing the stones—completely engaged as little mathematicians at work!

With gentle support from adults, we introduced and modelled rich mathematical language throughout the play, encouraging children to think and talk about:

“More” and “less” as they filled their bowls

“Fewer” when comparing small collections

“Many” as they noticed larger amounts

“Heavier” and “lighter” when using the scales

It was lovely to hear children using these words with growing confidence:

“My bowl has more than yours!”
“This one’s heavier—it goes down!”
“I’ve got fewer stones than before!”

By using real objects in a meaningful, playful context, the children deepened their understanding of quantity, weight, and comparison, all key building blocks for early maths development.

We love how outdoor learning gives children space to explore, think, and collaborate in a way that feels natural and exciting.

Well done to all our little problem-solvers! 💡
