Reception Newsletter 10.12.18

Term: Autumn 2                Date: 10.12.18

Dear Parents and Carers,

It was fantastic to see so many of the children in their pajamas on Friday evening for Bedtime Stories. We had a lot of fun and hope the children did too!

Last week we read Aliens Love Underpants. The children loved the story and were busy designing their own underpants. They also used their phonics knowledge to label underpants and create ‘missing posters’.

We have a few clothing items that can not be located. Please could you check if you have any school cardigans labelled with ‘Billie’ or LS at home that your child may have picked up by mistake. Thank you!

Often in December the children enjoy sending christmas cards to their friends. This year we ask that if you and your child choose to send christmas cards, that the children take part in this activity and the adults do not do all the work. At this time of year lots of children are practising writing their name and doing so in a christmas card,  gives them an opportunity to practice and one with a purpose. It will vary for all children but some may be able to independently write christmas cards, copying difficult words. Others may just write their name, whilst some children may trace theirs. Of course there is no expectation for anyone to send christmas cards, but we feel if this is something you choose to do, the children are involved with the process.

This week we will be reading Stickman. We will be going on our own stickhunt, writing letters to santa and of course performing the Nativity on Tuesday!

Physical Development
The children are working hard at writing their names independently as well as practising their letter and number formation.

Maths
This week we will be finding one more and one less than a given number. The children will go on a stick hunt and then order the sticks in order of length. We will also be working on our number formation.
Literacy
The children will be using their phonics knowledge to write a list to Santa. They will also caption what they would do if they found a stick. The children have also been using PhonicsPlay.co.uk to read and sort alien and real words.

Expressive Arts and Design
The children will be making Christmas cards as well as decorations.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1...... blast off!!

The Reception children have really enjoyed exploring their new role play area this week. After reading Whatever Next and Aliens Love Underpants we decided to build ourselves a space rocket! The children have been busy taking emergency calls at the control panel, warding off aliens, repairing their spacecraft and taking on space missions.

Role play is a very important part of a child’s education. The imagination is a powerful tool which as we know is innate in some children but needs encouraging in others. In order to accomplish this we have to equip the children with spaces, scenarios, props and the support they need to explore their real life or imaginary worlds. Imaginative play not only aids intellectual development but also improves children’s social skills and their creativity. In addition it gives children a chance to play out events that they have observed or experienced in real life.

"There is aliens outside!" Ralph
"We need our space helmets." JJ
"5, 4, 3, 2, 1.... blast off!" Megan

Nursery Healthy Eating - Stay and Learn

Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend the Nursery Stay and Learn session. The Nutritionist was able to give us all some tips on how to make healthy choices for children.
The children then really enjoyed having their parents stay with them and complete activities related to healthy eating. They had the opportunity to make fruit skewers, snack a jack faces with vegetables and practice using their knives and forks with playdough.
Mr Borrell also organised a very impressive pizza workshop for everyone. After modelling how to create a pizza and talking about the importance of using a variety of vegetables as toppings, the parents and children were then able to make their own delicious pizzas.
A big thank you to Mr Borrell (the chef) and Sharon (the nutritionist) for their time on the day. It was lovely to see the parents and children working together so well. We look forward to welcoming everyone again for our next Nursery Stay and Learn session on January 31st focusing on storytelling.

Ready, Steady, Smoothie!

The Reception children took part in their own healthy eating and smoothie masterclass this afternoon. The children started off with some activities to raise their heart beat including jumping jacks, running and some stretches. They then discussed how we need a balance diet and learnt that to keep healthy they need to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

They were interested to find out that a portion size varies depending on the size of the person. The portion should fill the palm of your hand. We tested this out and found that for Darci this was 6 grapes, but for Darren the chef this was 10 grapes, as he was a lot bigger!

Next up.... smoothie making! Max, Francesca and Larissa stepped up as their class smoothie makers and everyone counted down as the ingredients were added and the blenders turned on. It was quite noisy! Then we got to taste our banana smoothies, they were delicious! We were now refilled and ready for the rest of the afternoon.

"Wow it's super noisy." Max
"I can feel my heart beating fast." Ryan
"It was yummy." Victoria

Diwali Breadstick Fireworks

As part of our Celebrations and Festivals topic, the children have been learning about Diwali. Diwali is one of the largest festivals celebrated in the Hindu religion. In Reception, the children enjoyed making breadstick fireworks. The children followed the instructions, taking turns to make the icing sugar, and then they placed the mixture onto their breadsticks. After they added the sprinkles and enjoyed eating their edible fireworks.

A Little Trip to Lidl for Aspen

Today Aspen class went on their class trip to Lidl to buy all of their ingredients for the baking of their elephant biscuits!

We have been reading 'Elmer' and we wanted to make some elephant biscuits for our elephant parade and "Elmer Day" party. We were very lucky that some parents joined us for the walk in the rain and they helped us find our ingredients and prepare our delicious biscuits!

Flynn: "There are bird cages on these trees... Look!"

JJ: "Can I press the button for the lift?"

Our grown-ups helped us find all the ingredients for preparing baking and decorating our biscuits and then we got to use the tills ourselves. We learnt how to use the self-service tills and we collected our change all by ourselves.

Alex: "I know how to use the till!"

When we got back to school it was time for business! We had to carefully follow our recipe to make sure that our dough was just right for our elephant biscuits. We are already great at handling dough as we do it all the time for our play-dough so we really impressed the grown-ups with our baking expertise.

When the biscuits were baked we had great fun decorating them with all sorts of icing, sweets and goodies to make them pretty and delicious.

A big thank you to all the parents who helped us today and we can't wait for our next outing!

Apple Class Visit Lidl!

Today was a very exciting day for the children in Apple Class, it was their first school trip of the year! The children arrived at school ready for a very busy day ahead. The high vis jackets were on and the children ready to go. The children walked to Lidl following instructions and spotting things on the way. "Look it's the 496!" said George. Once we arrived in Lidl we had a fun filled trip up in the lifts and then set off to do our shopping.

Each group was responsible for buying certain ingredients for our biscuits, including the decorations. The children set off thinking about were certain items might be kept in the store. Once they selected their shopping we headed to the tills to pay. The children packed their bags, collected their receipts and it was time to head back to school to get baking. After one more trip in the lift!

The children worked in their groups to follow the same biscuit recipe as we used last week for Children in Need. This meant they were familiar with it and beginning to become more independent. The counted the spoons, mixed, rubbed and rolled. Today we cut out elephant biscuits as our story of the week is Elmer.

Phew, it was nearly time for lunch! The biscuits were baked and after lunch we got set decorating them. We chose our own colours and decorations like the elephants who dress up for the elephant parade in Elmer. A busy day, full of lots of experiences and fun. The children listened and behaved well despite the high levels of excitement. We hope the children enjoyed the biscuits and maybe shared them with you!
