Buried Treasure!

Reception have been busy this week making their own treasure maps using the age old tradition of tea bags to make them look old! First they started by drawing their maps, and marking where the treasure was hidden with and ‘X marks the spot’. They also labelled some key features and some children even included a compass. Next they screwed up their maps carefully, there was a few shocked faces at this part. Finally they painted the crumpled maps with tea bags to give them that old weathered affect. The results were pretty impressive.

As the children made their maps there was much discussion over what features were on their desert islands and the route you needed to take to successfully rescue the treasure. Let’s hope these maps stay hidden from the rouge pirates that kidnapped the class bears on Monday!

“I’ve drawn a cave here, you have to creep through it.” Maysa
“Past the trees and over the river.” Varvara
“These tea bags make it look really old and wrinkly!” Olivia

Fine Motor Football!

Reception have been putting their fine motor skills to the test this week as they played finger football. The game took a lot of control and communication between team mates. Strengthening the fine motor muscles in our fingers and hands is crucial to being able to hold a pencil correctly and to form letters and write. It is amazing to see how much this has developed in everyone since September. As the children played there was lots of discussion about the world cup. They also discussed which team they were on, which player they wanted to be as well as keeping track of the scores. It will be of no surprise that everyone wanted to play for England, and that we won every game!

“Goal! I scored again! We beat Sweden at the weekend.” Lucas
“This is really tricky.” Ellie-Jane
“I played football with my cousins on Sunday, I won!” Finley

Reception Go Bonkers 2018

The Reception children had a fantastic time celebrating our annual Bouncy Castle Day - Go Bonkers! Congratulations to all of those children who managed to score over 96% with their attendance and got to enjoy an extra bouncing session!

Pirate invasion!

Today reception had a shock when they discovered that their bears and monkeys had been taken hostage by the pirates! Luckily the pirates left a trail of clues around the school to help the children work out where to find their beloved class mascots.

We followed the clues past the apple trees, the basketball hoops, the gym, the sandpit, the library and back into our own classrooms!

Nathaniel: "Look another clue!"

Faizah: "We can use our phonics to read it!"

Aksanan: "It's cheeky monkey!"

Will the bears ever come back from the pirates or have they been forced to walk the plank? Watch this space to find out the next instalment in the hostage saga!

Parents and carers can stand at the top of the ramp and watch them walk safely in their classrooms. This usually helps with the transition in Year 1.

Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.

The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class. Reception build a paddling pool!

It has been a hot few weeks at school and today Reception decided to build a paddling pool! Before we started we talked about the materials we would need and how we were going to construct the sides. There was a lot of thought over how we could stop the water escaping!

Time to build! The child showed fantastic reciprocity skills as they collaborated to build the pool. The was much discussion over how to lay the bricks and how high to build the sides. Once the children had added the tarpaulin they realised it was not going to stay in place. The children quickly put their heads together to secure the tarpaulin with bricks. Although the children had lots of fun we were sure to discuss the safety aspects of being around water and the children are all aware that to stay safe there must be an adult present if they are going to construct a pool.

A lovely activity in the warm weather, also provided an incredible learning opportunity. With many areas of learning being covered including communication and language, physical development and PSED. Lucas and Zoe even went on to build their own mini paddling pool.

"We need more bricks, the sides are not high enough!" Danny
"Let's use the hose to fill up the pool." Lidia
"Can we do this everyday?" Zuriel

Paradise Wildlife Park

The Reception children had a fantastic experience at the Park.  They saw an incredible range of creatures including meerkats, lions and penguins.  As well as the impressive collection of animals there was a new section called "Dinosaur World", I am sure you can imagine how popular this was!?

There were also multiple play areas and the children of course all had a great time eating their picnic lunches.  On our return to school, the children have been writing recounts about their trips.  The only down side to the event was that we didn't want to come home and we could have spent much longer there.

A big thank you to all of our adult volunteers.

"The zebras are from Africa, look!" Awwal
"Camels keep water in their humps." Maya-Rose
"Me and Noah went on a coach, it was fun, it was epic!" Harry
"I loved the penguins best." Danny
