RECEPTION LEARNING - SUMMER 1 WEEK 1

Maths 

In maths, the children have been exploring number bonds to twenty. They have been using the Numicon resources and the part-whole model to explore the different ways to to make ten and challenging themselves to find ways to make twenty. 

Key Vocabulary: Number bond, add, altogether, equal, more than, less than.

Livai- “7 is my part, 3 is my other part, 10 is my whole” 

Callie-  “2 is my part, 8 is my other part, 12 is my whole” 

Esmee: "Ten and zero makes ten and also seven and three makes ten"

Joshua: "Eight and two makes ten"

Araoluwa: "six and four makes ten"

Finley: I think seven and three makes ten! Hmmm... let me check..... yes it does"

Literacy

This week, we have started the summer term with a new topic book;  Jasper's Beanstalk.  This is a story about a cat called Jasper, who finds and plants a bean. He waters it, rakes and sows it, but it just doesn't seem to want to grow...   after sometime the bean begins to grow and grow and grow into a giant beanstalk. 

This story helps children to understand sequences, we see Jaspers follow a sequence of steps when planting his bean. The children will be planting their own beans next week as part of this topic and so as part of their literacy task the children were asked to sequence and write about the steps they will take when they come to plant their bean. 

Key Vocabulary: bean, plant, soil, roots, nutrients, rake, dig, light, beanstalk.

Zofia: "It grew big... to a big beanstalk"

Emma: "First, he found a bean"

Ameera- ” You put the bean in the soil first” 

Mavis- ” You have to put water on the bean to grow”

Today in school, we celebrated St George's day. The children watch a video and found out more about St George's Day and why we celebrate it. To mark the special day, they made some England Flags.

 

Reception Learning Week 2

 

RECEPTION LEARNING - WEEK 2 AUTUMN 2

Key Information 

• The Reception Team would welcome any donations of Christmas decorations to help us decorate our classrooms for the children.
• Children in Need is on Friday 19th November - Please bring a £1 donation per family if you can. This will be a non-uniform day so feel free to wear - spotty clothes, bright colours etc.

Maths 

This week, the children are continuing to count and compare as they as they explore one more and one less. They completed a one more and one less activity using the multilink cubes. The children enjoyed using 5 frames to represent numbers and predict how many there would be if there was one more or one less. We have been looking closely at moving forwards and moving backwards and linking this to the vocabulary 'more and less'.

Literacy

In literacy this week we have been learning about remembrance day and why we wear poppies. It is important that our children are taught about significance of Remembrance Day and why people wear a poppy.

To support the children's learning, we watched a short animation produced by cBeebies, called, ‘Poppies’ to help. It is a really beautiful piece to watch and was a great way to introduce discussion of Remembrance Day without focusing on the death and fighting. We focused on the importance of Remembrance Day and how we honour those people who have kept us safe and enabled us to live in the world we live today.

Art

This week's art was linked to remembrance day. The children took part in lots of creative tasks, creating poppies to remember those who had kept us safe. We created class wreaths and laid them by the school cenotaph.

Read Billy’s Bucket and go through the Vocab Slides.  Imagine you have a magic bucket, look inside and describe what you can see.	What can you see in your bucket? Can you write sentences describing what you can see in your bucket?	What would you like for your birthday and why?	Look at the Sea Creatures and go through the facts.	What would you use your bucket for? Would you use a bucket and spade to make sandcastles? Imagine you went on a trip to the seaside. What would you take?

Wellbeing Wednesday

Reception, on Wellbeing Wednesday you can take a break from your computers and devices and take part in lots of fun, different activities outside or around your home.

This afternoon, complete these mindfulness activities: Make your very own magic glitter jar!

 

 

 

You could also go for a walk in your local area. What did you notice on your walk? Did you see any animals or notice any changes to any of the trees or wildlife?

You may want to help your family with any chores around the house. You could tidy your room or help with folding clothes away or washing up.

Why not help your family to prepare and make a healthy dinner or bake something delicious in the afternoon!

Numeracy 

Recap odds and even numbers

Odds and Evens: objects which can be shared into 2 equal groups with no items left over are even. Those which have one left over when they are shared into two equal groups are odd. Work through Odds and Even. What ones are odd or even?	Go through the  10 Frames and sort them into even and odd numbers. Remember doubles and halves - which 10 frame patterns show doubles and halves and which do not? Look at the pattern when you line up numicon. Identify the odd, even, odd, even pattern as you count up.	Give yourself an amount of cubes or lego construction. How can you check if you have an odd number? Are they all odd? How could you check? Now give yourself one more cube and add it to your set. How many do you have now? Do you still have an odd number of cubes? Continue adding one more cube. What do you notice? What is the largest odd number you can build? How can you check that it is odd?	Get 2 teddies and 2 plates and have a selection of items for halving to give to both your teddies. Explore which quantities will go exactly into 2 equal groups and which will have one left over. If you have 6, can you give both teddies the same? What about if you start with 5? Is that an even number or an odd number? How do you know? You can draw pictures to record your findings on a whiteboard or pen and paper. Now, use a different amount of teddies and plates. Keep 12 items to share each time but vary the number of teddies and plates. Explore sharing the 12 items into equal groups so that each teddy gets the same. If there are 2 teddies will they each get the same? How many are in each group? Are there any items left over? What about if you have to share the objects with 3 teddies or 4 teddies? How about when you share with 5 or 6 teddies?

Play a board game at home. You could play Snakes and Ladders or a different game that you have.  Can you remember the rules of the game? Remember to take turns!

This week you are going to design and make your very own board game!  What game would you like to make? Think of ideas for your board game!

What do you need to make up your own game? Can you plan the resources you will need and think of the instructions and rules to your game? Plan your game!

Finish planning your game and make your very own board game!  Can you play your game with your family members? Can you follow the rules and remember your turn?  Can you evaluate your game? What worked well? What didn’t work so well? What would you change next time and why?

Take one minute, concentrate and fill your mind with what is happening right now. All your worries will disappear and you feel calm and relaxed!
