Year Reception- what we have been learning w/c 27.4.26

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

This term our topic is Plants and Growth. Our focus book this week was Tadpole’s Promise.

Here is what we have been up to:

During our water play we sang Five little speckled frogs and a range of other nursery rhymes. This supported the children’s communication and language development,as they joined in with familiar words and actions, as well as their expressive arts and design through music and movement.

We have been looking after our bean plants with great care and observing them with much curiosity. Some of the children’s beans have already developed stems and leaves- how exciting!

This week we learnt all about the life cycle of a frog. We visited the school pond for the second time, where the tadpoles are growing beautifully. The children enjoyed observing them as they swam and discussed the different stages of the life cycle using new vocabulary such as frogspawn, tadpoles and froglets, which they learned during their topic lessons this week.

In Literacy we recapped our red words the,a,I,of,he,go,to,my,was, you,we,they, she and remembered that sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. This week we learnt how to write the red word ‘have’. We wrote the features of a frog.

Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1,2 or 3 sounds as well as word time words (1.5, 1.6, 1.7 etc).

In Maths this week the children have been exploring verbal counting patterns beyond 20.They completed a range of activities to support their learning and understanding, including identyfing mystery numbers, playing “pass then number ball”, and taking turns to count up to 20.

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Year Reception: What we are learning w.c 20.04.2026

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

This term our topic is Plants and Growth. Our focus book this week was Oliver’s Vegetables.

Here is what we have been up to:

This week, the children had the opportunity to explore the seeds of different vegetables. They carefully cut them open, observed what was inside, and expanded their vocabulary by learning new names such as rhubarb, butternut squash and Brussels sprouts. The children also enjoyed talking and writing about their likes and dislikes of different vegetables.

The children enjoyed exploring a range of activities in the sunshine. They used their measuring skills while they experimented with soap, leaves and paint. The children showed great curiosity as they stirred and mixed the different ingredients. The children also had a go at shadow painting, attempting to paint shadow portraits of themselves and noticing how their shadows changed.

The children have been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week.

This week we continued to learn all about Plants

We recapped our red words the,a,I,of,he,go,to,my,was, you,we and remembered that sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. This week we learnt how to write the red word ‘they’. We wrote about our favourite vegetable.

Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 or 2 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

We also learnt about Earth day and how it encourages people around the world to think and learn about what we can do to look after our planet. As a class, we nominated one person to switch off the lights as we leave the class for lunch everyday. This will promote sustainability within the school.

On Thursday, the children and staff completed the BPS Mini Marathon. The children showed fantastic effort, with most of them running, jogging, or walking continuously for 26 minutes- amazing! We are so proud of you all. We would also like to say a huge thank you for the generous sponsorship our school received. Your support is truly appreciated.

In Maths this week the children have been building numbers to 20. They explored teen numbers and learned that they are made up of ten and some more. The children used various resources to support their understanding and enjoyed representing numbers in different ways.

The children have also been taking care of their planted beans. They have been observing them closely and noticing changes over time. Some of the beans have started to grow roots, and others have begun to develop shoots.

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!
