Nursery's First Week

Now we have collated all GDPR forms we can share what the children have been busy doing in their first few weeks! We are very impressed with how well they have settled into their new environment.  They have already started to learn to make their own toast, have particularly enjoyed using our new kit camp resources outside and have had lots of lovely tea parties in the home corner and it's only the end of Week 2! It has been lovely to watch the children develop relationships with staff and also start to make friends and join in with other children in the setting.
Thank you to all of the parents for supporting us to ensure the children have a smooth start to their Nursery year and for being patient at home time whilst staff learn new faces and names.

Ready, steady, bake!

Today Reception began making and baking their own gingerbread men.

As part of our 'Traditional Tales' topic, we have been reading and enjoying 'The Gingerbread Man'. Today we were really excited to make our own gingerbread men, using our very own recipe that we have been learning, practicing and refining since we joined school in September. We first used this recipe after our shopping trip to Lidl, but we are now able to read it and follow it all by ourselves!

First, we had to select the right resources and ingredients. We used our phonics to help us read and follow the recipe.

Then we had to use our maths skills to carefully count the correct number of spoonfuls of our ingredients into our mixture!

We were great at sharing and turn-taking to ensure that we all had a go mixing and rolling out our dough.

Finally, our teachers did the tricky work at the oven and we were finally able to enjoy our gingerbread men!

We had lots of fun and it was a great afternoon in Reception!

Firework Food

In preparation for the firework season and our week learning about Diwali, Reception children worked very hard to make lots of special pasta that they can use for their arts and crafts and finger gyms.

The children developed their fine motor control painting each individual piece of pasta and they took responsibility for all the mess by cleaning and tidying up after themselves!

After our pasta had dried we then mixed in lots of glue and glitter to make our pasta sparkly and glittery, ready to use in our own arts and crafts.

Luckily, nobody wanted to eat this special pasta because we think it might give us a tummy ache.

We have also been making spicy rice! Using a special blend of rice, food colouring and exotic spices, we have made a good supply of resources for tracing our letters and it looks just like fireworks!

Nursery Toast Station

The children have enjoyed making their own toast this week. They have been developing their independent skills and have been trying to cut their own toast and spread the butter. They have had to concentrate and listen very carefully but have really enjoyed the process - especially tasting the end product!
"This is so yummy, crunchy, crunchy!" Elkah

Giraffes can’t dance, but we can!

This week Reception have enjoyed reading 'Giraffes Can't Dance'. We have been reflecting on our own skills and talents, thinking about what we are really good at doing.

We have lots of very talented and creative children in Reception this year, making all sorts of props to support their play!

Miraz: I can draw dresses!
Alex: I can paint giraffes!

Rosie: I can make play-dough!

We have been working as groups to make resources to support our play. We have been listening attentively so that we can follow the instructions and make yellow giraffe play-dough. We were really good at taking turns to stir, mix and knead our play-dough.

We made our  own dancing giraffes, practicing group work and appreciating teamwork! We worked our fingers really hard, scrunching up all the tissue paper to stick down on our giraffe frames!

This week we have been mastering new challenges, adding more skills to the list of things that we can do.

Charleigh: I can butter my own crackers!
Callum: I can do my perfect pencil grip!
Abdulkarim: I can cut out my animals!
Dominic: I can sharpen my pencils. If you try, try, try, you can, can, can!

What a fun first week!

As Reception finish the end of their first full week at school doing full days, we are all feeling very tired from all the activities we have been up to!

From creating our own small worlds to exercising our fingers all day long, we are ready for a nice relaxing weekend!

JJ: "Look, we can play football with the conkers!"
Dominic: "I know I can get all the bubbles popped!"

This week we had our first visit to the mud kitchen, serving mud pie and mud soup to any willing diner!

We didn't get many human guests at the mud restaurant, but a few 'dinersaurs' came in for some mud cake and mud jacuzzi.

Liam: "The dinosaurs need a bath!"
Flynn: "I am making waves in the bath with the hose!"

We have been busy making friends, learning how to share resources, play kindly and take turns.

At the end of a long week, we all need to either let our hair down like Vanessa, or take a leaf from Emma's book and use our conkers for a nice relaxing foot massage.

Reception's First Week of School!

It has been an exciting week with Reception at Broadford! We have had a wonderful first week of school, meeting our new friends and our new teachers.

This week we have learnt the rules and expectations of our new setting, whilst getting familiarised with all of the amazing resources that we have available to play with!

The children have been exploring all the different parts of our provision, making play-dough pizzas, seeing "real science" in action and performing sell-out shows.

Miraz: "I think I lost a hair tie because it's not tied up anymore."
Ryan: "I am doing a show."

The children have been learning about how to lead their own learning, choosing where to play and taking responsibility for tidying up after themselves.

Lucas: "Look how big this tunnel is! The tractors are going through!"

We have been doing team-building activities, teaching the children the importance of kind hands and kind feet.

Karimah: "Look! It's like real science!"

We are looking forward to the year ahead.

Reception build a paddling pool!

It has been a hot few weeks at school and today Reception decided to build a paddling pool! Before we started we talked about the materials we would need and how we were going to construct the sides. There was a lot of thought over how we could stop the water escaping!

Time to build! The child showed fantastic reciprocity skills as they collaborated to build the pool. The was much discussion over how to lay the bricks and how high to build the sides. Once the children had added the tarpaulin they realised it was not going to stay in place. The children quickly put their heads together to secure the tarpaulin with bricks. Although the children had lots of fun we were sure to discuss the safety aspects of being around water and the children are all aware that to stay safe there must be an adult present if they are going to construct a pool.

A lovely activity in the warm weather, also provided an incredible learning opportunity. With many areas of learning being covered including communication and language, physical development and PSED. Lucas and Zoe even went on to build their own mini paddling pool.

"We need more bricks, the sides are not high enough!" Danny
"Let's use the hose to fill up the pool." Lidia
"Can we do this everyday?" Zuriel

Easter Egg Extravaganza

This morning, the Reception children took part in Broadford's Easter egg hunt extravaganza. The children listened carefully to the instructions and were excited to begin. Laughing and screaming, skipping and jogging, they went to find the eggs.

With Easter, just around the corner, it is wonderful to spend time with your friends and family and there's nothing more fun than an Easter egg hunt. Easter egg hunts are great fun for all children as they encourage the children's social and development skills. It was fantastic watching everyone participate in the hunt and the children enjoyed locating the eggs around the playground. These activities are essential to the development of children’s well-being, as well as learning to share and interact with others it also allows children to explore their imagination, creativity and explore the world around them.

"I've got six eggs!" shouted Mackenzie.

"Look how many eggs I've got!" exclaimed Frankie.

"I've got so many eggs!" beamed Lottie.
