Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

This term our topic is Journeys. Our focus book this week was The Way to School.

Here is what we have been up to:

This week we learnt all about different methods of getting to school and how natural disasters can prevent some children from getting to school safely.

In Literacy we recapped our red words the,a,I,of,he,go,to,my,was,you,we,they,she,have,all,said. We wrote about the journey to school and what can be seen. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 or 2 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have been creating and continuing complex patterns. We have also learned about doubling. We worked hard to show our understanding through practical activities.

Reception: What We Are Learning 

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus book was Jack and the Beanstalk. 

Here is what we have been up to:The children have been listening to the story, learning about the life cycle of a bean, talking about what they would like to find at the top of a beanstalk and making their own beanstalks in the art area.

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. In literacy we have been writing words about Jack and the Beanstalk. They used their sound knowledge to write words such as Jack, egg, hen, mad and run. We also learnt about red words and spelt the. Remember you can’t fred a red. This means you can not sound out red words. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc). In Maths this week the children have been focusing on subitising numbers to 5. Subitising is being able to visually see a number of objects instantly without needing to count them out one at a time. We spoke about how numbers can be represented in different ways. We worked hard to count a range of objects.

Reception E for Excellence

We have had a fantastic week of learning and there has been so much to celebrate and be proud of in Reception! 

These children worked extremely hard and have been rewarded for all of their determination and efforts.

E for Excellence - Daniel for his amazing work in Topic this week. Daniel worked hard to make a house made out of lollipop sticks. We learnt about The Three Little Pigs and made houses from blocks, sticks and straw. Daniel could predict which houses would blow down and which ones would stay up. Well done Daniel! 

Dojo points - Zacki A for paying attention and working hard this week. Well done Zacki A! 

Star Writer - Victor for his excellent writing on The Three Little Pigs. Victor used the sound mat to write CVC words. Well done Victor!

Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

Our focus book was Elmer:

Here is what we have been up to:

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. The children have been learning the sounds sh, th, ch, qu, and ng. Please continue to read with your children and work on these sounds with them. 

In Topic, we have been learning about diversity. We have celebrated our differences and understood that we all belong! 

In Maths this week the children have been learning patterns. They worked hard to continue the repeated patterns. The children also worked in pairs to create a repeating pattern with action images. Well done Reception for your hard work in Maths this week! 

Next week, as part of our Expressive Arts and Design curriculum, the children will be making wands linking to the story Room on the Broom. To make the wands we will need sticks and dried leaves. If you go out on a walk, please do collect some and bring them into school for us to use before next Friday.

Reminders and key dates:

Topic:

This week we have been learning about Remembrance Day and why people were wearing poppies over the weekend. We explored why this day is significant and how we commemorate those who fought in the war. Children described a poppy in their writing and practised listening for the sounds they could hear in words such as 'red' and 'soft'. 

Children had the chance to create their own poppy fields by using using their fingers in paint to create the leaves and centre. Once dry, they drew the stems to complete the flower. 

We spoke about how poppies were a sign of hope during the war and then got our hands dirty outside, planted some poppy seeds in the garden. 

Maths: 

This week we have been learning to identify and create a triangle and a circle. We also explored positional language such as over, under, through and in between by taking a friend through an obstacle course.

Important messages

• GRAPES- If you send in grapes for your child's lunch, they must be cut in half length ways. Because of their size and shape, grapes can all too easily slide down a small child’s windpipe, blocking airflow. Thank you 

Today the children were super excited as the Easter Bunny hopped into Nursery to see all the children! The children were so happy and even went to our snack area and got him some carrots to take on his way (a very cute moment!)

Then we headed to the hall for our Easter bonnet parade. The children loved this and as well as showing off all their hard work, they also got to play some Easter games with Mrs Nicholls

At the end of the parade, Mrs Nicholls had the very hard job of picking the winners. Here are the pictures of our winners:

Our snack this week followed our egg theme! The children made egg muffins! They really enjoyed cracking the eggs and mixing them all together, We added a bit of milk and some cheese and then they were ready to pour into the cake cases.

As you can see from the photos, they really enjoyed the results! 

The children have enjoyed learning in the outside area this week. They have been creating platforms to jump off of. These began low and as the children practised their jumps, their confidence grew and so did the height. We spoke about how to land safely by bending our knees and stretching out our arms to help us balance. 

They also turned the tree into a construction site and the diggers were involved, moving a lot of soil! 

In the art area the children created some beautiful flower inspired pictures. They were able to carefully control the paintbrushes and start to look carefully at what they could see.

After reading the story 'We are going on an egg hunt' the children worked in small groups to decipher clues and find the hidden wooden eggs! The children had to work as a team and think very carefully, the rhyming clues gave them the perfect opportunity to practice hearing rhyming words. After cracking all the clues the children were able to exchange the wooden eggs for a delicious edible bunny.

Super mark making! The children have been using the new writing area to create their own books.

The construction area was too small for this epic train track so it took over the back of the classroom. The clever design made sure that the animals were contained so they would not escape and get hurt. 

What a cozy way to spend an afternoon. It is lovely seeing the children using their imagination like this and getting lost in the world of play.

                     

We love seeing how the children use the home area to support how they want to play. We can see Ibrahim acting out a true life experience and this type of play allows him to make sense of what he has seen.
