Year 2 Forest School

Year Two will have their PE and Forest School day on Friday's.

Both of these sessions will take place outside, please ensure children have appropriate footwear.

Mulberry and Rowan class will attend PE.

Pine class will attend Forest School for 5 weeks starting 16.09.22

PE Kits should remain in school and they will be sent home at the end of each half term. Children should come to school in their normal uniform and will change in school for their PE or Forest School session.

Forest School kits can remain in school, unless dirty. Children will bring any wet or dirty clothes home as needed.

Reception Stay & Play

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are excited to invite you to our OPAL stay and play session. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to play with your child/children in the school grounds. We will be making dens, dressing up, making up imaginative stories, playing with water and much more.

Reception OPAL Stay and Learn

Date: Tuesday 7th June 2022

Time: 2:10 – 3:00pm

Play time is a hidden part of the school day for you, so our Summer term 'Stay and Learn' sessions will allow you to see how play at break and lunchtime has developed during Broadford’s OPAL journey, how the children are playing and, also, gives context to the requests and pleas we send out to the school community e.g., welly requests, loose parts donations, fundraising efforts. 

If possible, please bring a loose part donation to help with den making, for instance a tyre, clean wood, tarp, plastic pipe, crate. We also are always looking for ride-on toys, scooters, old suitcases and anything form the loose parts list send out previously.

Please indicate via this form if you are able to attend. We are really excited about this project and hope that you will support us in our efforts to improve playtime for all children.

Please dress for all weathers and for play!

Our Special Guests - 17.5.22

5 Little Ducks went to Reception one day!

Following on from all our work about life cycles, looking after animals and observing them. Today, we were very lucky to have some special guests visit Reception. 

Our lunch time play worker Sally brought in Ducklings for us to meet. The Ducklings were super soft and we really enjoyed having them here with us. 

This links to our  Early Years Curriculum  (Understanding the World) through exploring the natural world around us, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.

Reception Learning Summer 1- Week 3

       

                                            RECEPTION LEARNING - SUMMER 1 WEEK 3

Maths 

In maths, the children have been exploring Spatial Reasoning. Spatial reasoning is the ability to think about objects in both two and three dimensions, and visualise movement of those objects or deduce patterns between them. The children's activity was to copy the way a range of shapes had been arranged. It was fantastic to see the children work hard to create exactly what they had seen. Well done Reception.

Literacy

   

This week, we started reading Tadpoles promise. This is a story about This book is about a tadpole who meets a beautiful caterpillar and they fall in love with each other. The shiny black tadpole promised the rainbow caterpillar that he would never change but that was not a promise he could keep.

Soon the tadpole changed. He grew two legs and then he developed two arms. His tail vanished and he became a frog. The butterfly could not recognise him. She cried herself to sleep because she was so upset. Surprisingly, she changed too… into a magnificent butterfly! Then something you would never expect happened. The frog leapt out the water and ate the beautiful Butterfly. 

Our literacy task this week involved perspective writing as if the children were the Caterpillar and Butterfly. We spoke in class discussions about how the children would feel if they were the characters in the story.

Pond Visit!

This week, we visited our very own Broadford Pond! The children were lucky enough to see tadpoles swimming around as well as a range of plants, bugs and rocks. We managed to capture some tadpoles with a net, added water to a tank and now we are tracking our tadpoles as they go through their life cycle. We have seen one change into a Froglet so we better put them back in the pond soon otherwise we all know what will be bouncing around next....... FROGS!!

RECEPTION LEARNING - SUMMER 1 WEEK 2

Maths 

In maths, the children have been exploring number bonds to twenty. The children have looked at different ways to make numbers over ten.  We practiced counting these numbers and seeing if we could notice patterns associated with numbers when they go higher than 10 We used ten frames to add numbers higher then 10. The children did an amazing job!

Literacy

   

This week, we continued reading Jasper's Beanstalk. This is a story about a cat called Jasper, who finds and plants a bean. He waters it, rakes and sows it, but it just doesn't seem to want to grow...   after sometime the bean begins to grow and grow and grow into a giant beanstalk. 

We compared this book with Jack and the Bean stalk. Jack and the Beanstalk is about Jack, a poor country boy who trades the family cow for a handful of magic beans, which grow into an enormous beanstalk reaching up into the clouds. Jack climbs the beanstalk and finds himself in the castle of an unfriendly giant.

Our literacy task this week involved labelling the parts of a plant so we could understand what we may see as our beans grow.

Planting Our Seeds!

This week we planted our seeds. We had such fun getting our hands dirty!! We added our magic bean and then filled the pot half full with soil. We have been caring for our plants by giving them sunlight and watering them. Gardening is great for children as it allows them to feel responsible for caring for their plant, they understand about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants, they gain self- confidence for watching their own plant grow and the develop a love of nature and how the outdoor environment is a safe and pleasant place. We can't wait to watch our beans grow!

Our Wormery!

This week the children were very interested in finding Worms in the garden. This was the perfect opportunity to create our very own Reception Wormery. A wormery is a place where worms can grow, compost and make more worms.  A wormery will recycle food waste into superb fertilizer for your garden or yard. We love observing the worms everyday!

In maths, the children have been exploring number bonds to twenty. They have been using the Numicon resources and the part-whole model to explore the different ways to to make ten and challenging themselves to find ways to make twenty. 

Key Vocabulary: Number bond, add, altogether, equal, more than, less than.

Literacy

This week, we have started the summer term with a new topic book;  Jasper's Beanstalk.  This is a story about a cat called Jasper, who finds and plants a bean. He waters it, rakes and sows it, but it just doesn't seem to want to grow...   after sometime the bean begins to grow and grow and grow into a giant beanstalk. 

This story helps children to understand sequences, we see Jaspers follow a sequence of steps when planting his bean. The children will be planting their own beans next week as part of this topic and so as part of their literacy task the children were asked to sequence and write about the steps they will take when they come to plant their bean.

Today in school, we celebrated St George's day. The children watch a video and found out more about St George's Day and why we celebrate it. To mark the special day, they made some England Flags.

Our topic focused learning

This week the children have been learning about animals who live in the jungle. We listened to stories involving jungle animals; including, monkeys, tigers, elephants and giraffes. The children have enjoyed sharing their knowledge about each jungle animal and show off the information they remembered from previous topics. 

The children enjoyed making valentines postcards for one another this week. They especially love using glitter!

“Mummy has cards already! It was her birthday. She doesn’t need any more cards” said Henry when asked if he would like to make a valentines card.

This weeks learning

The children have had lots of fun this week helping to refill the mud in the mud kitchen, using wheelbarrows, spades and other tools to accomplish their goals.

Focused 2 year old activities 

This week the toddler group has been focusing on physical activities using their gross motor movements, crawling, jumping, balancing and running, negotiating space.

Nursery rhyme of the week

This week the children have enjoyed singing along to down in the jungle during group time. They have enjoyed naming animals they know live in the jungle and taking part in the actions to the song.

Bedtime story Scheme

Books will be sent home every FRIDAY.

Please return all books by WEDNESDAY.

Unfortunately books which are lost or damaged will need to be paid for.

PLEASE RETURN THE BOOKS EACH WEEK. 

All books will need to be returned in the last week of each term 

Focus child Meetings

Each week children will be chosen to be observed by their keyworker. Emails will be sent home to inform parents of the upcoming parent meeting taking place the following week, either in person or via telephone. Parents will have an opportunity to complete a form asking questions and sharing concerns they may have for the key worker to answer during the parent meeting. This form will be sent via email. Please check your emails weekly for school communications and evidence me parents share from your children's teachers. Parents are welcome to upload pictures and videos of their children at home. 

Key Information

Please LABEL  all your children's belongings, including both shoes. Please do not send your child in with a school bag as we have very limited space and all spare clothing should be stored in the nursery. Please do not send your child in with water bottles as we have cups stored in the nursery. Most importantly please do not allow children to bring toys from home into the nursery as they may get lost, cause conflict with other children or become a dangerous hazard. All resources in the nursery are risk assessed and age appropriate to maintain the children's safety.
