Nursery Newsletter 9.10.17

Term: Autumn 1                      Date: 2.10.17
Dear Parent/Carer,

This week we are sharing the story 'Avocado Baby' by John Burmingham this week. Avocados will be available for the children to taste and examine throughout the week. The core Nursery Rhymes we are focusing on this week are: 'Insy Winsy Spider' and 'Wind the Bobin Up.' The children have been enjoying joining in with our daily calendar and song and movement sessions.

This week we will start our topic 'All about me'. The children will be encouraged to talk about themselves and their family. Family pictures would really help to support the children communicate this, if you are able to then please send in family photos with the children or email them to: eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk.

Staff will also continue to focus on modelling how to use areas of the classroom and the resources in these areas correctly. Children will be extended or supported in their play through adult interactions or enhancements to the provision.

Thank you to the parents/carers who have already brought in a spare change of clothes for the children. This week we will transfer clothes to plastic bags and will return any other bags the children have brought in. This will prevent children feeling the need to carry bags in and out of school and blocking the exit returning for bags. If you wish your child to bring any items home please help them to put it on their peg in the morning so staff can ensure they have all their belongings at home time. It would also be a good idea to label all clothing items so we can easily return them to the correct family. Thank you for your understanding and support in this matter.

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:
Mathematics
Select a small number of objects from a group when asked.
Begin to recite number names in sequence.

Physical
Handles tools and objects carefully. This includes cutters and tools in our malleable area this week and being able to pour water from jugs carefully in the water area.

Literacy
Children begin to give meaning to marks as they draw or paint.
We will support the children to look at their family photos, talk about these and encourage them to create their own family pictures.

Communication and Language
Encouraging children to use simple sentences correctly.
Encouring children to hold a conversation and respond to comments.

Personal and Social Development
Ensuring children are able to co-operate with routines and some boundaries.
Modelling the correct behaviours in play, ensuring children use resources well and begin to share with other children.

We are happy to see that the children are quickly learning the Broadford Values.
Values
Children
Turn up, on time every day.
Do their best in their work and their play.
Demonstrate politeness and kindness to every one they meet.

Parents/Carers
Ensuring that children arrive on time and ready to learn through:
Providing your children with a healthy breakfast or lunch.
Providing them with warm clean clothing

Support your children’s learning at home by:

Reading stories to children regularly

Encouraging them in their interests
Model politeness and kindness to every one you meet

Dates

The school photographer will be in school on Tuesday 17th of October for individual school photos.

Messages
Reading to your child is very important. This week we will start to put the Nursery reading cart outside at the end of sessions. Please borrow any books from the cart so you can share them with your child, you can write the title of this book in the small red book they will take home. Remember to return the book when you are finished.

Reciprocity in Reception

Here at Broadford Primary we feel it is important to promote the 4R's: We encourage all of the children to consider reflectiveness, Resilience, Reciprocity and Resourcefulness as their responsibilities.  Kyla and Charlie demonstrated many of these skills yesterday when they had to solve a problem.  They worked collaboratively to make the water reach the mud kitchen because every mud kitchen needs water and the hose was too short! They resourcefully borrowed guttering and stands from other areas to build a structure and when a leak occurred they reflected on how they could improve their structure. Charlie called to Layla "Let's try this" as he swapped a piece of guttering that was leaking.

The mud kitchen is always a popular space, it addresses many of the areas of learning.  The mud kitchen enables the children to partake in rich, engaging sensory play, while  mud investigation allows them to express their creativity while enhancing their fine motor skills. Children practice social skills such as cooperation, negotiation, communication, and sharing as they work together. Emergent math and science skills are practiced as children make before and after comparisons, solve problems, test theories, and measure and count ingredients for their mud pies. Mud is a wonderful art medium, it is in ample supply, can be easily molded to create endless sculptures, and responds differently than clay or play dough. The open-ended nature of mud encourages creative thinking and allows children to freely create without fear of making mistakes. This also contributes to a child’s sense of self, helping to build a strong inner sense of competency.

Green Fingers

Before
After

This week the children have been busy preparing the garden beds for Spring, tidying up, removing leaves, weeds and other debris from the beds. We've been on the hunt for garden pests and relocating them to new homes in the school grounds, making sure we clean our garden tools afterwards too.

Everyone has been working hard together to ensure that the beds are prepared and all debris collected and removed. This year, we will be developing our garden beds so that the children can grow their own flowers, fruit and vegetables which they will be able to enjoy in the Summer months.

Providing children with growing and gardening opportunities will enable them to connect with the living environment and give them hands on experiences with plants and insects. This is an essential part of learning and development and one which supports children's emotional and physical health and wellbeing. Gardening and growing encourages the children to explore different types of foods, provides a variety of ways to be physically active, improves the children's social skills and develops confidence making them more aware of the world around them.

Nursery Newsletter 2.10.17

Term: Autumn 1                      Date: 2.10.17
Dear Parents,

Welcome to Broadford!
It has been lovely to see so many smiling faces as the children enter Nursery. The Nursery children have settled in well and have been enjoying exploring their environment. This week we will continue to focus on supporting the children to use the resources correctly and get to know staff and children in the setting.

The core Nursery Rhymes we are focusing on this week are:Twinkle, Twinkle and Here we go round the Mulberry Bush. This week we are sharing the book 'Making Faces' and making our own biscuits with expressions.

Please could all children bring in a spare change of clothes in a carrier bag so we can keep this in school.

Each week you will receive a weekly newsletter to tell you more about your child's learning. The objectives we will be focusing on each week will also be added to this.

We follow the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum).
Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.
Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first.
These are:
  • Communication and language;
  • Physical development; and
  • Personal, social and emotional development.
These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.
As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:   Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the world; and
  • Expressive arts and design.

These 7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. We make sure that activities are suited to each child’s unique needs. Children in Nursery learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outdoors.

Next week this will be published directly onto the EYFS blog which can be accessed through Broadford Primary School's website. The newsletter will also be available on the school Facebook page. If you would like a paper copy of this letter please speak to a member of the Nursery Team.

If you would like to contact a member of the EYFS team via email the address is   eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk.
