Nursery learning 20.6.25

What a week we’ve had with the weather! We always enjoy sunny days because they give the children wonderful opportunities to explore our water area in different ways. We are incredibly fortunate to have a mini splash zone in our garden, which the children absolutely loved using this week. They took off their shoes and socks to fully enjoy the sensory experience, as well as having lots of fun cooling down.

This activity supports the EYFS curriculum by encouraging children’s physical development through movement and coordination, as well as their understanding of the world as they explore water properties. It also promotes personal, social and emotional development, as children engage confidently and interact with their friends during play.

The water fun didn’t stop at our splash zone – we also used it in our mud kitchen to create some lovely muddy dishes. The children collected water from the water butt and thoroughly enjoyed pouring and mixing. This hands-on activity helped develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which are key areas of Physical Development in the EYFS.

The children absolutely love a big box. To them, a box is never just a box, it can be anything their imagination dreams up! Today, it transformed into a giant canvas for their creativity. They eagerly grabbed paintbrushes and a rainbow of colours, and had a fantastic time bringing the box to life with their colourful designs.

It’s amazing to see how something so simple can become such an exciting and joyful experience for the children, sparking their creativity and teamwork.

The water trays have been very popular this week, filled with a wide variety of resources that sparked the children’s curiosity and imagination. They delighted in filling and pouring, watching how the water moved and changed shape. Mixing different materials together created new textures and colours, which fascinated them. There was plenty of splashing too, as they laughed and experimented with how much water they could move around. It was wonderful to see how engaged and excited the children were as they explored and discovered through sensory play.

We have been continuing with colour mixing this week, and the children are becoming increasingly independent. They are remembering to wash their paintbrushes carefully before each new dip, showing great concentration and care. Many are also beginning to recall which colours blend together to create new shades, experimenting confidently and enjoying the magic of mixing paints..

The filling and pouring fun continued inside in our sand area. As they played, the children were exploring ideas about capacity without even realising it. They compared containers, discussing which would hold the most, the ‘fat one’ or the ‘tall one’. They also used lots of descriptive language to talk about the sand, using words like ‘soft’ and ‘fast’ to share their observations and experiences.

We are very lucky to have such a wonderful garden area at nursery. In this hot weather, the children enjoyed playing in the water to keep cool, or relaxing comfortably in the shade. They also took part in creating our sunshades, which gave them a real sense of pride and ownership. It was lovely to see them enjoy using their creations while staying safe and shaded from the sun.

As always, our train track has been a huge hit this week. The children have been busy creating some amazing tracks together, working collaboratively and sharing ideas. It’s wonderful to see them discussing their plans, negotiating turns, and enjoying the challenge of building something as a team.
