Reception Weekly Newsletter


Term: Spring 1 Date 06.01.14


Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed the festive celebrations and are looking forward to the term ahead. This term our topic is going to be ‘Superheroes’.
Each week we will be looking at a different theme. This week, our superhero is ‘Sportacus’ from the children’s programme ‘Lazy Town’ linking with the theme, ‘Healthy Lifestyles’.

Don’t forget on Wednesday morning, we have a presentation from the local health visitor about making healthy choices for children. Once the presentation has finished, you are welcome to come down to the classes to join in with some ‘healthy’ activities.

Your child will be taking part in the following activities and routines (Although the skills will remain the same, the activities may differ depending on the children’s interests):


Personal, Social and Emotional:
Developing an understanding that good practices with regard to exercise, eating, sleeping and hygiene can contribute to good health.
Discussing the importance of team work. 

Communication and Language:
Uses talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events – discussing our Christmas break.
Encouraging children to ask ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions in their play. 

Physical Development:
Hall session: The children will continue to go out in small groups to work with our Sports Coach, Mr. Clark. Please bring in PE kits as soon as possible.
Talk about the ways that the children can keep their bodies fit and healthy while at school, so that they can be as fit as a superhero.
Taking part in our daily ‘5-a-day’ fitness routines. 

Literacy: 
Read, Write, Inc. sessions will commence this week.
Writing recipes and instructions in the role play area.
Writing signs about keeping healthy
Sharing the non-fiction book, ‘Healthy Eating’. Discussing features of non-fiction text.

Mathematics:
Playing number bingo – focussing on recognition and number formation.
Understanding one more than and one less than a given number.
Making a class pictogram of our favourite fruits.
Focussing on doubling and halving when chopping fruit for snack time.
Weighing fruits. 

Understanding of the World:
Designing ‘Happy New Year’ posters on the computer.
Designing ‘Keeping Healthy’

Expressive Arts and Design:
Smoothie Shop role play – making smoothies for each other.
Fruit printing – reinforcing repeating patterns. 

Messages:
The children may bring in something related to Superheroes for Show and Tell on Friday.
Wednesday 8th January @9.15am – STAY AND PLAY SESSION
Thursday 9th January @3.30pm – Sponsored Keep Fit with Mrs Light.
Please remember to label all items of clothing and shoes.
