Uncle Terry the Ship Broker

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have Mr Drakes' Uncle Terry into Broadford to talk about his job as a Ship Broker and how he got into Broking.

Being a Broker means you are a salesman. Being a Ship Broker means you sell the large ships which carry the cargoes to and from London. Uncle Terry used to use his Maths skills daily in his job when he was calculating how much profit he would make, how many crew members were needed and how many tonnes of cargoes the ship could hold.

"When you work, you must work but when you play you must play and that is the way to be merry and gay" Uncle Terry told the children. Reciprocity and constantly reflecting what your doing is key in Ship Broking as you work with many different people, lawyers, customers etc. You must also be resilient when trying to sell the ships as some days are better than others.

Uncle Terry informed the children that he needed his Literacy skills for when he was writing contracts, articles and emails to the other Brokers.

Did you know that the reason Canary Wharf has its name is because the ships used to import/export fruits from there to the Canary Islands?

This ship sold for 6 Million pound!

Another two ships Uncle Terry sold.

An article Uncle Terry was featured in because he sold a ship to the richest man in Cyprus.
