Reception Weekly Newsletter 24.11.14

This week we will be continuing our topic ‘Colours and Patterns’. However the children have shown a keen interest in ‘Space’ so we will be incorporating both topics. Our book of the week is ‘Aliens Love Underpants’. Your child will be taking part in the following activities. (Activities are subject to change, depending on the children’s interests):
 
 Personal, Social and Emotional
  • Children are aware of the boundaries and behavioural expectations.
  • To develop an understanding that their own actions can affect others.
  • Can usually adapt behaviour to different events, social situations and changes in routine.
 
Communication and Language 
  • Sharing the story ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ and providing materials for the children to develop their own narratives.
  • Beginning to understand 'why' and 'how' questions.
  • Uses a range of tenses (e.g. play, playing, will play, played).
 Physical Development
  • Developing fine motor skills through tracing activities, using tweezers and manipulating dough.
  • The children will be continuing to go out in small groups with Mr Portway.
  • Holds pencil between thumb and two fingers, no longer using whole-hand grasp.
  • Holds pencil near point between first two fingers and thumb and uses it with good control.
  • Can copy some letters, e.g. letters from their name.
 Literacy
  • We will be continuing with our daily Read, Write Inc. groups.
  • Sometimes gives meaning to marks as they draw and paint.
  • Links sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet.
  • Begins to break the flow of speech into words.
  • Hears and says the initial sounds in words.
  • Please ensure your child’s reading book is in school on their reading day.
Mathematics
  • Recognises numbers 1-5.
  • Selects the correct numeral to represent 1 to 5 then 1 to 10 objects.
  • Sometimes matches numeral and quantity correctly.
  • Recites numbers in order to 10.
  • Separate a group of three or four objects in different ways beginning to recognize that the total is the same
  • Shows and interest in number problems.
  • Beginning to use mathematical names for ‘solid’ 3D shapes and ‘flat’ 2D shapes, and mathematical terms to describe shapes.
Understanding of the World
  • Talks about why things happen and how things work.
  • Developing an understanding of growth, decay and changes over time.
Expressive Arts and Design
  • Explores what happens when they mix colours.
  • Explores colour and how colours can be changed
  • Designing and making their own aliens.
 
Learning Challenge
 
Each half term we will setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.
 
The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.
 
Poem/Song to learn: 5 Little Monkey’s jumping on a bed
 
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed.
One fell off and bumped his head.
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said,
"No more monkeys jumping on the bed!"

  • Wednesday 10th 2.30- PM EYFS Christmas Performance
  • The children may bring in something related to our stories for Show and Tell on Friday.
  • Please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in school just in case they have any little accidents. The spare change of clothes does not have to be school uniform.
