Reception Newsletter 11.1.16

Term:  Spring 1                        Date 11.1.16

Our Superhero topic started well last week after we read the story 'Superworm'. The children enjoyed hunting for worms and looking closely at them before we added them to the wormery. This week we are focusing on the story 'Supertato' by Sue Hendra. In the story the evil peas escape from the supermarket freezer but lukily Supertato is close by to help rescue them and save the day.

Personal, Social and Emotional

  •  Explains own knowledge and understanding, and asks appropriate questions of others.
  • Through our adult led activities this week we will be supporting the children to share their ideas and thoughts in small groups. They will need to listen to other children's ideas and respond with their own comments. This will also be encouraged in the children's play.
  • We will be looking at the characters in the story and discussing their actions. We will be thinking of other people the children know who have been really helpful like 'Supertato'.
 Communication and Language

  • Children  use complex sentences to link their thoughts.. e.g. He is sad because he fell over.
  • Children will be encouraged to extend their vocabulary when creating their own Super vegetable character. They will be encouraged to use describing worms and explain their Super vegetables special powers.
Literacy

  • The children will need to use their phonics to help us write some important notes to the evil peas this week.
  • We will be focussing in these skills in our writing;
  • Segmenting the sounds in simple words and blend them together.
  • Using some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence.
  • Beginning to write simple captions and understanding that sentences are made up of words.

 Physical Development:

  • Children will be developing their balancing skills using climbing equipment in the hall.
  • Children will be learning to jump safely from equipment and land with two feet.
 Mathematics

  • Beginning to find one less/ more than numbers to 10 or 20.
  • The children will be using their knowledge of addition and subtraction to help us solve some superhero problems. We will be focusing on the children using and understanding the vocabulary involved such as 'take away' 'add', 'equals', 'altogether', 'total'.
Understanding of the World

  • The children will continue to observe the worms in the wormery and watch as they dig tunnels.
  • The children will be examining different vegetables, naming them and looking at similarities and differences.
Expressive Arts and Design

  • The children will be designing and making their own Super Vegetables this week. They will be using a selection of materials to add to their vegetables.
