Reception Home Learning Week 4

Good morning Reception!

We hope you have had a great first week of the summer term. We have received some fantastic emails and photos of what you have all been up to at home. Keep them coming! It has been lovely speaking to families this week. Everyone has quickly adjusted to this new normal and we are really impressed at how you are getting on! If we haven’t got through yet, keep an eye on your phone, we will be trying again (it may be from a withheld number).

Did you see our toilet roll challenge we posted on Friday? We had lots of fun making it and hope it made you smile. How many adults could you recognise? If you haven’t seen it yet scroll down the blog or Facebook to find it.

Below are some activities for this week, some things you should do everyday and others you can choose when is best for you.

RWI Phonics

There will be a new sound taught each day along with a spelling video. Please see the below table for starting times, although they will remain on Facebook and Youtube for 24hours. Please join in every day with these videos, just search ‘Ruth Miskin Training’ on Facebook or Youtube. If you are unsure which level your child is working at please drop us an email.

They have also shared a guide for parents that contains lots of information. If you scroll down the page there are lots of online resources including books, ditty reading sheets, worksheets, videos, green word slide shows.

George and his mum created this fantastic phonics game after watching the daily speed sound lesson. They wrote out some of the sounds and red words and then attached them to the washing line (you could use a wall). They then took turns to throw a ball at the word or the sound that was called out. Mrs Hallowell played a similar game with her children but used a water pistol. This is such a fun way to practice phonics. Keep sharing your great ideas!

Maths

After speaking to some families last week some parents asked for some more support with Maths at home. Our first piece of advice is to keep it practical!

Here is an overview of what we cover in the summer term:
  • Ordering numbers to 20, saying one more or less than a given number.
  • Addition and subtraction using concrete objects (think Lego, buttons, pasta, sweets, cars) and/or a number line to support.
  • Doubling and halving numbers.
  • Measuring and comparing - weight, length, height, capacity, size.
  • Naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes.
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme at school and they have provided some lovely maths activities linked to story books. This week it is all about pirates! If you do not have the books at home, you could listen to them on YouTube. Take a look at the activities, choose the ones you would like to do and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

  • Go on a number hunt around your house. Can you say the number that is one more and one less than the number you found? You could record all the numbers you find on paper or maybe you could take photos.

  • Practice your addition using a dice (or two). Roll the dice twice and add these numbers together. Remember to use the spots on the dice to help you or concrete objects. Can you record the number sentence? You might want to draw the two dice so you have a pictorial representation to help you.

Reading

Teach Your Monster to Read
https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/

This is an interactive game where children design their own monster and complete a series of phonics and reading based games. It is free to set up an account on a computer or laptop and can also be used on tablets and phones.

We had a little play and think the children will really enjoy it. There are three different levels to start from. You can exit or close the game at any point and when you log back in it will start from the same point. It is probably a good idea to agree a time limit with your child before they start.

Oxford Owls Books
Read together everyday. This should include story times where you read to your child and times when your child reads to you. RWI have just uploaded some more free e-books which are perfect for your child to read.

Writing
  • Find out about your favourite minibeast. Can you draw a picture and write some facts. Plan your sentences out loud with an adult first, can you have a go at writing them independently. You might want to use the sentence starters ‘It is….’ or ‘It has…..’
  • Write a letter to a friend or neighbour. Deliver it on your daily walk.

Other Activities:
  • Learn how to play noughts and crosses.
  • Design and make a kite from recycled materials in your house. Take it outside to test it.
  • Lay the table for lunch or dinner.
  • Make a treasure map. You could make the paper look old by scrunching it up and using a wet tea bag to paint it. This can be done before or after you draw your map.
  • Make a list of different exercises (eg. star jumps, shuttle runs, hops), how many can you do of each exercise in one minute? Who can do the most in your house?
  • Find where you live on Google maps. Can you find any other places of interest (eg. school, park, shops, swimming pool). You can look at it both as a map and a satellite

Spellings
Reception will be joining the rest of the school on Friday for the weekly spelling test. Practice writing these spelling everyday, ready for the test on Friday mornings. One of your teachers will read out these spellings in a video for you to have a go at home. We have chosen some of the red words to begin with, as these are tricky words and we use them a lot within our writing. Each Monday we will release five new spellings in this blog. You could challenge yourself to write a sentence including each of these words. Good luck!
