Nursery Weekly Newsletter




Term: Spring 2 Date 17.03.14


We will be continuing with our Jungle topic this week. Also we will be incorporating Science week by making planes and boats with the children. Lot of fun will be had as we develop many new skills. We will be racing the vehicles, building them, talking about distance, floating and sinking.
The story for the week is ‘Who Sank the Boat?’ and we will be singing, 'Ten in the bed' and '5 Little men in a flying saucer'.

Personal, Social and Emotional
Growing ability to distract self when upset, e.g. by engaging in a new play activity.
Welcomes and values praise for what they have done.
Enjoys responsibility of carrying out small tasks.                          

Communication and Language
Uses vocabulary focussed on objects that are important to them.
Uses talk to connect ideas, explain what is happening and anticipate what might happen next.
Single channelled attention. Can shift to a different task if attention fully obtained - using child's name helps focus .

Physical Development:
Runs safely on whole foot
Can stand momentarily on one foot when shown
Can catch a large ball.

Mathematics
Uses some language of quantities such as more and a lot.
Knows that a group of things changes in quantity when something is added or taken away.
Knows that numbers identify how many objects are in a set. 

Understanding of the World
Talk about why things happen and how things work.
Learns that they have similarities and differences that connect them to, and distinguish them from, others.
Shows interest in the lives of people who are familiar to them. Remembers and talks about significant events in their own experience.

Expressive Arts and Design
Imitates movement and taps out simple repeated patters.
Beginning to use representation to communicate, e.g. drawing a line and saying 'That's me.
Imitates movement in response to music and Taps out simple repeated rhythms. Explores and learns how sounds can be changed.

Literacy
Focussing attention.
Distinguishes between the different marks they make.
Shows awareness of rhyme and alliteration.                          

Messages.
As previously mentioned, it is Science week across the whole school so we will be carrying out lots of Science based activities.
In relation to the children’s mathematical development we would also like to make a display of numbers, from the environment. Therefore we would appreciate it if you could assist your child in looking for numbers in old catalogues, magazines and packets and bring them in to school.
