Topic: 'Buckets and Spades'

Thank you to all of the parents who attended our ‘Stay and Play’ picnic on Friday I hope you will agree it was a success and we were very lucky with the weather. This week we have a very exciting performance of ‘Oliver Twist’ on Monday, a 'Punch and Judy' performance on the large sand pit on Thursday and on Friday Apple class will be visiting Thorndon Country Park.

We will be basing our learning around the story of ‘The Gruffalo.’ During the week your child will be taking part in the following activities within the seven areas of development (activities are subject to change, depending on the children’s interests; however, the skills remain the same):

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

• Children are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities.
• Children talk about how they and others show feelings, talk about their own and others' behaviour, and its consequences, and know that some behaviour is unacceptable.
• Children will say when they do or don't need help.
• Children will be discussing the story of ‘The Gruffalo.’
• Discussing transition into Year 1.

Communication and Language

• Sharing the story of, ‘The Grufalo’ and getting the children to ask, who, what why and how questions.
• Children will be encouraged to express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners' needs.
• We will be working on the children giving their attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.

Physical Development        

• Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements.
• Shows increasing control over an object in pushing, patting, throwing, catching or kicking it.
• Fine manipulative skills set up daily to improve children’s pencil control.
• Children will be going out in groups with Mr Portway practising their skills for sports day on the 14th July. Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school.

Literacy

• We will be continuing with our daily Read, Write Inc. groups.
• Please keep practising ‘Fred talking’ the words we send home and encouraging your child to use their ‘Fred Fingers’ to help them spell the words.
• The children need to be bringing in their reading books daily. We praise the children who regularly read at home to an adult and have a reward system in place
• Attempts to write short sentences in meaningful contexts.
• Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds.
• Children also write some irregular common words.
• Children write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.
• Continue a rhyming string.

Mathematics

• Can describe their relative position such as 'behind' or 'next to'.
• Orders two or three items by length or height.
• Orders two items by weight or capacity.
• Counting on and backwards from zero to twenty and beyond.

Understanding of the World

• Children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools.
• They select and use technology for particular purposes-taking photographs of their lion hunt on the I pads
• Enjoying our daily dance warm up to the ‘5 a day’ fitness programme.
• Playing cooperatively as part of a group to develop and act out a narrative.

Expressive Arts and Design

• Children safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
• Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes.

Learning Challenge

Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.
The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.

Messages

• The children may bring in something related to our topic for Show and Tell on Friday.
• Please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in school just in case they have any little accidents. The spare change of clothes does not have to be school uniform.
• We regularly update our EYFS blog. Please like our Broadford Primary Facebook page every time you see an EYFS blog. Feel free to make a comment on the children’s experiences.
• If you wish to contact a member of the EYFS staff please email them at eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk
• Please remember that your child should not return to school for 48 hours from the last time they had sickness or diarrhoea.
• Please remember that children still need to bring a coat into school as sometimes the weather can still turn chilly. For those sunny days remember to send in a sun hat and apply sun protector before they come to school.
• Thank you to all the children who have been bringing in their learning challenges to share with us in school. It is great to see how the children are continuing and deepening their learning at home.
• As part of your child’s transition to year one, we would appreciate it if you could encourage your child to walk down to their class on their own. Children will now write their name when they come into their class to register instead of finding their name. The name cards will be available if your child needs help.
