Weekly Reception Newsletter 8.6.15

Term: Summer 2 Date: 08.06.15
 
Topic: 'Buckets and Spades'




Our new topic for the term is 'Buckets and Spades.' The children thoroughly enjoyed developing their role play area into a sea side resort and using their imaginative skills to act out a narrative in there. The children confidently followed instructions to make a sandwich with a healthy filling and this week we will be writing our own instructions on how they made their sandwich.

Thank you to those children who brought in pictures of seaside holidays or day trips in the UK, please keep bringing them in as we would like to talk to the children about their own experiences and display them on our topic web.



Following on from last week we will still be basing our learning around the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch.’ During the week your child will be taking part in the following activities within the seven areas of development (activities are subject to change, depending on the children’s interests; however, the skills remain the same):
 
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Children are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities.
  • Children will say when they do or don't need help. 
Communication and Language
  • Sharing the story of, ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch' and getting the children to ask, who, what why and how questions.
  • Children will be encouraged to express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners' needs.
  • We will be working on the children giving their attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.
  • Introduces a storyline or narrative into their play.

Physical Development
  • Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements.
  • They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space.
  • Fine manipulative skills set up daily to improve children’s pencil control.
Literacy
  • We will be continuing with our daily Read, Write Inc. groups.
  • Please keep practising ‘Fred talking’ the words we send home and encouraging your child to use their ‘Fred Fingers’ to help them spell the words.
  • The children need to be bringing in their reading books daily. We praise the children who regularly read at home to an adult and have a reward system in place
  • Attempts to write short sentences in meaningful contexts.
  • Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds.
  • Children also write some irregular common words.
  • Children write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible. 
  • Writing instructions on how to make a sandwich.
Mathematics 
  • Children solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
  • Beginning to use mathematical names for 'solid' 3D shapes and 'flat' 2D shapes, and mathematical terms to describe shapes.
  • Uses familiar objects and common shapes to create and recreate patterns and build models. They recognise, create and describe patterns.

  • Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer.
Understanding of the World
  • Children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools.
  • They select and use technology for particular purposes-taking photographs of their lion hunt on the I pads
  • Enjoying our daily dance warm up to the ‘5 a day’ fitness programme.
  • Playing cooperatively as part of a group to develop and act out a narrative.
Expressive Arts and Design
  • Children safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
  • Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes.
Learning Challenge
Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.
 
The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.

Messages
  • The children may bring in something related to our topic for Show and Tell on Friday.
  • Please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in school just in case they have any little accidents. The spare change of clothes does not have to be school uniform.
  • We regularly update our EYFS blog. Please like our Broadford Primary Facebook page every time you see an EYFS blog. Feel free to make a comment on the children’s experiences.
  • If you wish to contact a member of the EYFS staff please email them at eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk
  • Please remember that your child should not return to school for 48 hours from the last time they had sickness or diarrhoea.
  • Please remember that children still need to bring a coat into school as sometimes the weather can still turn chilly. For those sunny days remember to send in a sun hat and apply sun protector before they come to school.
  • Thank you to all the children who have been bringing in their learning challenges to share with us in school. It is great to see how the children are continuing and deepening their learning at home.
  • As part of your child’s transition to year one, we would appreciate it if you could encourage your child to walk down to their class on their own. Children will now write their name when they come into their class to register instead of finding their name. The name cards will be available if your child needs help.
  • The letters for our end of year trip to Thorndon Country Park went out on Friday, please can you return the slips along with your voluntary payment to your class teacher. If you are interested in helping and are likely to be available on the day, please let your child’s teacher know.
