Term: Autumn 1                                     Date: 21.9.15
The children enjoyed staying for lunches last week and we were impressed with their table manners! We are looking forward to having the whole of Apple and Aspen class in together this week. We will continue to develop the children's ability to work well as part of a team and make good relationships with their classmates this week.

The children have really enjoyed using our large outdoor area. As the weather is getting colder and wetter could the children please bring in a pair of wellies to keep in school. Can parents also ensure the children have warm, waterproof coats so they can go outside even if it raining.

This week we will be focusing on the story of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'

Personal, Social and Emotional
  • Being encouraged to demonstrate friendly behaviour, initiating conversations and forming good relationships with peers and familiar adults.
  • Beginning to accept the needs of others, take turns and share resources, sometimes with support from others.

Communication and language
  • Supporting the children to use the past, present and future tense correctly.
  • Encouraging children to question why things happen and give explanations.
  • Listening to and joining in with the story of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. Discussing the characters and events in the story.

Physical Development

  • Drawing lines and circles using gross motor movements using a selection of resources in the malleable area using gloop.
  • Holding a pencil between thumb and two fingers moving away from a fist grip.
  • Supporting children to catch and throw a large ball.
  • Mr Portway our PE specialist teacher will be coming to Reception in the mornings this week so the children have a chance to familiarise themselves with him before they begin PE groups next week.

Literacy
  • The children have been issued  with a reading book and reading record. Please encourage your child to talk about the pictures and make up their own stories. Every time you listen to your child read, please make a comment in their reading record- this may even be a bedtime story. It does not have to always be their school reading book.
  • We will be beginning to learn the initial phonics sounds in small groups this week. We will send the sounds home so you can see what the children have been learning in school. We will also be using Fred talk to support early reading skills ( saying the sounds in a word separately and asking the children to say the word back e.g. P-e-g is peg and h-a-t is hat).

Mathematics
  • Recognise some numerals of personal significance.
  • In the playdough area we will be assessing the children's ability to recognise numbers and count objects accurately using candles, playdough and number cards.
  • We will be continuing to introduce ten town our number formation scheme.

Understanding of the World
  • We will be supporting the children to select and use simple maths games on the computers.
  • We will be modelling how to use the 2 simple paint programme to draw pictures from our story of the week.
  • Letting the children join in with looking after our flower beds.

Expressive Arts and Design
  • Using collage materials and straws to encourage the children to use scissors correctly and create pictures of the bridge and water from our story of the week.

Messages

  • There is a whole school inset day on Monday 21st September so the children will start full time on Tuesday the 22nd.

  • Please make sure your child has a spare change of clothes in school just in case they have any little accidents. The spare change of clothes does not have to be school uniform.
