Painting Fun!

The Reception children have enjoyed working in the creative area during the first few weeks of school. The area like the rest of the setting has been set up so children are able to independently self select the resources they need. This even includes the paint, which sometimes means it gets a little messy! 

The children know they need wear an apron when painting. We have been encouraging the children to be reciprocal and to ask a friend instead of an adult for help. The children know where to fill up the water pots and can select the paint they need for their pictures. We are still working on the cleaning your brush bit! There has been lots of fabulous paintings already this year and we cannot wait to see what else they create. 

Reception Lunch

Last week the children stayed for their first trial lunch, it was a great success and it was fantastic to see so many of the children trying the food and capably feeding themselves.  Part of the Early Years Curriculum is to encourage social and independence skills.  For many of the children this was the first time they had met the lunch time staff, the children responded well to the Lovely lunch ladies.

Dear Parents,

      Thank you for such a great turnout at the Read Write Inc Workshop, which Miss Tynan, our RWI Lead hosted.  We hope this was helpful and Miss Tynan will be putting some links on the blog as requested.  If you missed the meeting we will putting an overview of the content in the front of their Reading Record and  we will also be giving out a leaflet at the end of the day.

      This week we will be reading the text ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and carrying out related tasks which will involve sharing and considering the feelings of others.

      Learning objectives:

Personal, Social and Emotional

Keeps play going by responding to what others are saying or doing.

Can select and use activities and resources with help

Shows confidence in asking adults for help

Communication and Language

Builds up vocabulary that reflects breadth of their experiences.

To follow directions

To use talk to connect ideas

Literacy

To sometimes give meanings to the marks they draw and paint

Holds books the correct way up and turns pages.

Physical Development:

Can usually manage washing and drying hands

Runs skillfully and negotiates space

Beginning to recite numbers in order to 10

Knows that numbers identify how many objects are in a set

Shows an interest in numerals.

Rewards Strategies

Just so you are aware we follow a whole school approach to behaviour management, incorporating the 4 R’s which can be found on the school website along with the values.  To ensure the system is age appropriate we use a happy and sad face within the  Early Years.  We do not use ‘House Points’ but we do use ‘Dojo Points’.  The points are allocated to children who are choosing to do the right thing. Each week we will have a dojo point winner.

Loose Parts: Volcanoes, Rollercoasters, Castles and Vets

This week the Reception children have been to far away lands, volcanic islands, fun fairs and other wonderful imaginary places. Building castles for Princes and Princesses, enthralling rollercoaster rides, and magical bridges to evade the flowing lava.

John and Zachary worked together to build a rollercoaster and excitedly spoke about trips to Southend, and the best roller coasters and bumper cars. John commented " I've been on a rollercoaster in Southend. We're making one now. The best thing at Southend is the rollercoaster." Zachary added " I don't like rollercoasters, I like bumper cars."

The children's interactions in the loose parts area have been exciting and adventurous this week. When children interact with loose parts  they enter a world of 'what if' which promotes increasing levels of creativity and imaginative play. They have been working cooperatively and socialising together as well as being physically more active.

Noah was building bridges and escaping from lava. "The floor is lava." shouted Noah, as he ran to find high ground and inviting other children to join in his game.  Ava created a dog box as she barked loudly. "I need to go to a vet." Christian, Aimen and Raima were busy building a castle and towers as  Preston travelled along a magic 'running jump' which he had made with his friends.

We can't wait to see the children's creations and where their adventures will take them next...

Woodwork Wonder

This week, the Reception children have started to use the woodwork area, practising the key skills needed to create and construct woodwork projects. This provides the children with the opportunity to think creatively. Developing learning skills such as making own choices, learning through trial and error and managing risk in a controlled safe environment. 

Lottie remarked, "You have to wear these (safety glasses) as something could go in your eyes."

Woodwork contributes to all aspects of learning in the Early Years, children become better at concentrating and are more focused as they use a variety of tools and equipment. Engaging in problem-solving activities as they construct their desired projects. Hand eye coordination is developed as the children learn to handle the tools with increasing control.For example, fine motor skills are developed through holding nails and screws whilst gross motor skills develop through hammering and sawing. 

Numeracy is a vital part of woodwork. Measuring pieces of wood, experimenting with shape and constructing three dimensional objects. The children have thoroughly enjoyed hammering nails into the balsa wood this week, practising some of the skills needed before they are able to create their own independent projects. 

"Look at all the nails!" Francesca excitedly said after she had practised hammering nails into the balsa wood.

      We had a super first week with the children most of them have settled really well into school life at Broadford.  Each week we will provide you with a newsletter.  The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you up to date with any relevant news in Reception.  It will include a list of intended learning objectives, an overview of activities, the learning challenge (which we will not commence until the second part of the Autumn term), notices, important dates and the stories and topics that we will be focussing on.

     We hope you had a chance to look at the children's first day pictures last week on the facebook page.
