Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

This term our topic is Journeys. Our focus book this week was The Gruffalo.

Here is what we have been up to:

In Literacy we recapped our red words the,a,I,of,he,go,to,my,was,you,we,they,she,have,all and remembered that sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. This week the children enjoyed describing the Gruffalo and talking about his different features. We were impressed with their imaginative ideas and growing vocabulary!

Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 and set 2 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have been learning how to share objects equally between groups. They used a range of resources to explore fair sharing. The children showed enthusiasm and are becoming more confident in recognising when groups are equal and when they are not.

Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

 Our focus book this week was the wonderful Handa’s Surprise. 

To bring the story to life,the children went on their own tropical taste adventure on Monday! They had the opportunity to taste a variety of delicious fruits, including avocado,pineapple, mango and passion fruit. We were absolutely blown away by the children’s bravery! We were especially surprised to see how many children were willing to try the avocado just by watching their friends give it a go. Peer pressure at its finest and healthiest!

After sampling the fruits, the children filled in a chart to rate each one with a smiley face or a sad face based on their preferences. 

During the tasting ,we encouraged children to use their senses and describe each fruit. We gathered all their fantastic ideas and created a vocabulary mind map packed full of descriptive words! This set us up perfectly for Tuesday’s writing activity! The children put their fantastic sound skills to work. They wrote sentences about which fruit they liked or disliked, and exactly why.

The children carefully checked their sentences for capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

To celebrate the setting of our story, the children learned about traditional Maasai necklaces and the special meanings behind each beautiful colour. They then used this knowledge and created their very own African necklaces, using paper plates and paint.

Once the beautiful creations were dry, the children put them on and danced along to some African music! The classrooms were full of rhythm,colours and smiles!

In Maths this week the children have been focusing on manipulating, rotating and selecting 2D shapes for a purpose. They had to put their problem-solving skills to the test, combining and rotating shapes to create their very own wonderful shape pictures.

Reception Summer Newsletter - Updated

Dear Parents and Carers, Term: Summer        

Welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and are looking forward to the Summer term. This term our topic is ‘Growth and Life Cycles’. In Summer 2 our topic will be Journeys. During these topics your child will continue to develop all of the independent skills we have been working towards since September; we are now aiming for those Early Learning Goals. 

Trips and Experiences

We would like to give you advance notice that there will be a trip to ‘Call of the Wild Zoo’ in July and this will cost £15. We will send out more information very soon. We will be visiting the pond and growing butterflies this half term. In summer 2 we will build a fort and take part in transitional activities to prepare us for year 1.

Dojo

Thank you for your engagement with Class Dojo. We are very pleased to see what the children have been getting up to outside of school! We hope you are enjoying the weekly photos and updates. Please feel free to use this platform to contact your class teacher with any questions you may have during school hours 8.30am - 4pm.

Reading 

Thank you for all of your support with the children’s reading at home so far. Just to remind you that the expectation is to read and sign the reading record at least 5 times a week. This is part of the home / school agreement that you signed at the beginning of the year. It is important that your child reads every day to help prompt not only the development of reading but also the love of reading.

Please continue to ensure that your child brings their reading folder to school on their reading day. If you are unsure of your child’s reading day please ask your child’s class teacher.

Additionally, if you have misplaced your child’s current word sheet please let your child’s class teacher know. Please also continue to record any reading you do at home in your child’s reading record. Thank you.

Uniform

In sending your child to Broadford Primary School, you agree to follow the uniform policy and work within the spirit it was written. The policy has been set out to be informative and clear; should you require clarification on any area of the school’s uniform, please contact the School Office or your child’s class teacher. The uniform options are:

Navy blue sweatshirt (preferably with the Broadford logo)

Navy blue cardigan (preferably with the Broadford logo)

Navy blue fleece (preferably with the Broadford logo)

Collared white t-shirt (preferably with the Broadford logo)

Grey trousers tailored, knee length grey shorts (worn with grey or white socks)

Grey regulation knee-length skirt (worn with grey or white socks)

Grey tights

Blue and white gingham dress (full length pattern)

Black shoes or trainers (no heels or coloured markings)

All school uniform is available through Khalsa School Wear. Children are permitted to wear stud earrings. Children must also not attend school wearing make-up or nail varnish/fake nails. Jogging bottoms and leggings are not part of our uniform policy.

Hair accessories

We kindly ask that children do not come to school with large hair bows and accessories. Hair accessories  should be small and limited to simple ribbons, bands or clips and restricted to basic colours of blue and white. 

Missing clothing

Please ensure ALL items of clothing that are brought into school are labelled. It is important that children are responsible for their own items but in order to help them locate these, names must be included. We have asked all children to put their jumpers and cardigans in their tray. Thank you for your support with this.

Phonics

The children have once again been assessed and placed into phonics groups based on their current stage of learning in phonics. They will continue to learn ‘special friends’. This term is used to refer to set 2 sounds - ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, oo, ar, or, ir, air, ou, oy. They will continue to learn to blend sounds into words moving from oral blending to reading short sentences.

Literacy

Stories are a key part of our curriculum and high quality texts will be used throughout the day to foster the children’s love of reading. This half term we will be focusing on Growth and Life Cycles. We begin with Jasper’s Beanstalk, Oliver’s Vegetables, Tango Makes Three, A Tadpole’s Promise and The Hungry Caterpillar. Please check Dojo and our blogs to see what the children get up to. 

Maths

The children have spent the Spring term building their understanding of numbers within 5 and learning lots of new maths vocabulary. In Summer, we now move on to the composition of numbers to 5, mass and capacity, building on our knowledge of numbers to 10 and length, height and time. Communication and Language

We will be finding information about plants from non-fiction texts and the internet. We will use the library to research our favourite vegetables. We will continue to practise our high frequency words and letter formation. We will recount our own experiences of plants, grow cress, design posters, write fact files and label life cycles. 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development 

Children will be encouraged to think about the importance of caring for plants and looking after them properly. We will talk about forests, parks, ponds and trees. We will go out to the large playground to have a look around and prepare us for year 1, as part of our transition for next year. 

Physical Development

We will continue with our indoor P.E lessons, introducing greater independence to each child by helping them to select and move equipment.
