RECEPTION LEARNING - SPRING 1 WEEK 4

Another fun week of learning had in reception. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the Gingerbread Man story and have really engaged with the story.  It has been lovely to hear the children retelling the story in their own words and some using the exact repetition; Run, Run as fast as you can, you can't catch me i'm the Gingerbread Man!

Maths

This week, the children have been deepening their knowledge of composition of number -understanding that one number can be made up from (composed from) two or more smaller numbers.  The children have had access to lots of resources and have been encouraged to represent  and solve problems in their own way.

How to support your child this week at home.

Play hiding games with a numbers of objects in a box, under a cloth, in a tent.

Use some objects from around the house and explore different ways of making six, seven or eight. Eg.. three pencils and 3 phones makes six altogether. Then ask them to write the corresponding number sentence;  3+3= 6.

Key Vocabulary: Number Bond, Numbers, Smaller, Bigger, Composition.

Literacy

In literacy this week, we have continued to explore the story of The Gingerbread Man.
We have seen some lovely sentence writing this week. The children are

Key Vocabulary: Farm, little old lady, little old man, stir, mix, run, fast

Finger gym

Finger Gym is a comprehensive programme of developmental games, stories, rhymes and activities to improve fine motor skills, language and handwriting. It helps to develop strong, flexible fingers, hands and arms. It promotes better hand-eye coordination, differentiated movement and manual dexterity. This week the children have enjoyed making a range of shapes using lolly sticks and placing plastic rings on thin sticks.

Our focus learning

Maths: the children have been focussing on shapes this week through thor play. We have played fun shape games with dice and our peers, taking turns. We have also been learning to identify 2D shapes based on sight and name. We have also been practicing our number recognition from 0 to 10 during circle time.

As he threaded shapes onto his string.

“We found all the shapes”

Said Ava-rose.

Physical: The children have been practicing gross motor movements outdoors balancing on boards and crawling through tunnels. Indoors we have been developing our hand muscles by spreading jam on toast, marking making and applying pressure to use the hole punchers.

Black history Month

The children enjoyed taking part in our black history carnival parade. We congo style danced around the nursery to Trinidadian soca, played on steel pans. The children learnt about the steel pan and used sticks and similar shaped bowls to recreate the steel pan sounds. We watched a video of children wearing costumes from Notting Hill carnival.

We all had a fun time
