Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus was ‘In the Castle’, ‘The old toy rom’, Mothers day and Science week. 

Here is what we have been up to: We have learnt about Knight's armour, the history of castles, the development of toys over the years, made our own toys, found out why we celebrate Mothers Day and participated in Science week activities such as cleaning water of its impurities. 

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. In Literacy, we wrote Mothers Day cards and explained the reasons we love our mum. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on Set 1 and 2 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have learnt one more and one less to 10. We also looked at number bonds to 10. We were able to count and make a range of numbers!

Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus book was The Train Ride 

Here is what we have been up to: The children have been learning the history of trains and fun facts about them. They have painted their own trains using different resources and they looked fabulous. The children also found a magic ticket and spoke about what destination they would like to visit on a train. The children also made great choices during choosing time. 

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. The children have all been assessed and are now working in groups based on this. Our Literacy focus was writing about where we would go on a train. We used works like the park, cinema, beach and shops. The children practised writing the red words; go and to. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 or set 2 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have been learning about time. They have sequenced events such as getting ready for school and making a jam sandwich. They understood that everything changes over time including themselves.

Nursery Learning 03.10.25

 This week, our focus story has been These Are My Hands. The children have really enjoyed exploring the different things we can do with our hands—clapping, waving, helping, and creating!

Art Area 

In the art area, we continued to embrace the beauty of autumn. The children have been practicing their scissor skills by snipping and cutting to create beautiful autumn leaf collages. They are learning to hold scissors correctly and to cut with increasing control and confidence.

✂️ Support at home: Practising snipping small strips of paper or cutting around simple shapes can really help strengthen those little hand muscles and build coordination.

We’ve also had lots of thoughtful conversations about autumn colours, textures, and the changes we see in nature this time of year.

Malleable Area 

Our autumn theme continues here too! The children used playdough to make their own hedgehogs and showed brilliant creative thinking as they chose what to use for spikes—pasta, sticks, and matchsticks all featured.

They carefully rolled, squashed, and moulded the dough to shape the hedgehog bodies, using their fine motor skills and exploring how different materials feel and behave. These kinds of hands-on tasks are great for developing strength and control in small hands, while also encouraging imaginative thinking.

Finger Gym Focus 

This week, our fine motor challenge was adding pegs to a hedgehog template to represent its spikes! This was a brilliant activity for developing finger strength and coordination.

The children showed great determination as they pinched and placed the pegs, and it led to lots of great conversations about hedgehogs, their bodies, and where they live.

Song of the week 

Our focus song this week has been the well-loved rhyme "Tommy Thumb." The children have loved singing along with the actions, and it’s been a great way to strengthen their finger awareness and coordination while also encouraging confidence in group singing.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development

As we continue settling in, we’ve been focusing on learning each other’s names and practising sharing and taking turns with our toys and resources. It’s been heart-warming to see the children remembering their new friends’ names, inviting others to join their play, and showing kindness as they play alongside each other.

We’ve captured more lovely moments of the children working, playing, and making memories together—whether they’re snipping leaves, singing with friends, building with the wooden blocks or proudly showing off their hedgehog creations!

The children are continuing to grow in confidence and independence each day. Thank you for your support at home—it makes such a difference in helping them feel happy and settled. We’re looking forward to more exciting adventures next week! 

Reception children shine in the Colour Run!

Reception Children Shine in the Colour Run!

Our Reception children had an absolute blast taking part in this year’s Colour Run! They ran, danced, and laughed their way through a rainbow of colour.

From start to finish, the excitement was contagious. As clouds of colour filled the air, our little runners showed fantastic energy, enthusiasm, and teamwork. It was a joyful celebration of fun and being active.

We’re so proud of all our Reception children for taking part and giving it their all. A huge thank you to the staff and families who supported the event — it was a colourful day to remember!

We hope you all had a lovely half term break, we have enjoyed welcoming the children back in this week.

Evidence Me- Please check this as we have recently posted information on Parent meetings, World book day and a Mother's Day brunch.

Nappies and wipes - If your child is in nappies and requires changing in Nursery please bring nappies and also a pack of wipes. You can bring in a pack and leave this here if you would prefer to do this. 

Coats, wellies, gloves and hats - As we are outside often we would advise the children to wrap up warm. Please do help us by labelling anything the children bring in as then we can help return any missing items to the correct owner! Please also encourage the children to independently try and put on their coats and hats etc at home, staff will always help if needed but we always encourage independence. 

Havering Children's Centre- The Havering Children's Centre are currently trying to ensure that all families with children under 5 years of age are registered with their local children's centre. We encourage you to register your child as this will help with their development and wellbeing.

The children have enjoyed exploring different utensils to see what kinds of patterns we can create this week. They experimented with the best ways to push the tools to make a big mark. 

                                                                  Malleable area

We have added flowers and twigs to our malleable area so the children can explore different scents and smells. They have enjoyed finding ways to make the sticks stand up really high! 

                                                                   Home Corner 

The children have been using this area lots this week. They have been excited to see packets of cereal's or bottles they have recognised and it has supported them to talk about their different experiences of food at home. 

                                                         Group Time

This week our pre-school children have been reading the story 'The Enormous Turnip'. They have been able to join in with the repeated phrases. They have explored the Turnips and the farm in the tuff tray, they have used it to create their own versions of the story and have added different characters in. As a group we have begun to talk about different parts of stories and the children worked together to order pictures from the story this week. 

 Our younger children have enjoyed listening to a story called 'Oh Dear!' They have been looking for the hidden eggs. We have learnt the animal names and noises through a fun dice game. The children have rolled the dice, been encouraged to say a sentence to name the animal and then have made the noise of the animal.

This half term we welcome some new children and families to our Nursery. We are looking forward to having them join our community. Please bear with staff whilst we learn new names and faces at home time. It may mean dismissal takes a little longer for a few weeks.

Imaginative Play

The children have been enjoying scooping and filling in the sand area. This week we added a tea set to extend their play and encourage imaginative play. They have spent long periods of time concentrating in this area and filling their tea cups for each other this week.

                                                                  Maths through play

To enhance our playdough area this week we added gems and sticks. The children have been enjoying making cakes for each other. The children have had lots of opportunities to practice our Maths skills by counting in order, finding the correct amount of candles for their cakes and sharing them with their friends. 

The children also listened to the story of the week 'The Hundred Decker Bus'. They counted the animals from the story using the puppets. 

Expressive Arts and Design 

We have been focusing on controlling our brushes and exploring paint. The children have enjoyed mixing paint and learning how much water to add to make marks. 

                                                                         Snack 

We are continuing with our focus on learning how to use knives to spread in the snack area. This week we added crackers with spreadable cheese. The children showed how much their skills have developed as they started to independently

Our Learning  

 

Snack area 

This week we have been making toast in the snack area. The children had a go at independently spreading butter and jam then cutting their toast. 

 

Construction

The children have had lots of fun with the cars in the construction area. They had races against each other to see who's car is the fastest. They spend lots of time building their communication and language skills through their conversations. 

Mark making 

The children have been making marks for a purpose this week on the writing table. They practised writing their names, with support from key worker. The children then practised during their choosing time. 

Sand area  

The children have been exploring with different vechiles in the sand area. They have been using cars, trucks, and digging machines to push and pull through the sand.
