We Scared Hunger Today!

#wescarehunger

The whole school community joined hands today to scare hunger away.
Thank you all so much for the donations of food I know that the foodbank will really appreciate every single item.

During the food drive this morning we collected a grand total of 876 items of donated food, which is amazing.

218 items were donated by children in EYFS, well done to you all!

The Trussell Trust

Mission and Vision

The Trussell Trust works to empower local communities to combat poverty and exclusion in the UK. The trust works with the people throughout the community, providing practical help through sustainable projects and enabling each person to realise that they are valued. The vision for the trust is to build communities where people of all backgrounds are included and have the opportunity to live in dignity with hope for the future.

People like to donate food because they know it is all going directly where it is needed, but supporting running costs is probably not so appealing. Without financial backing, the work the work of the foodbank is doing within the community is put under threat. If you feel that you would be able to support the foodbank financially see Mrs Nicholls who can provide you with a leaflet.

Why Do People Need Emergency food?

#wescarehunger

Today people across the UK will struggle to feed themselves and their families. Redundancy, illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and paying for the additional costs of heating during winter are just some of the reasons why people go hungry.

Couple forced to borrow soup to feed 18-month-old daughter.

When temperatures plummet in winter, foodbank clients across the UK are often forced to choose between eating and heating. For Anne-Marie and Danny, 22, a delay in benefits hit at the same time as Danny was off work with flu. He received no sick pay and finances got so tight that they were faced with eviction as well as having no money for food.

The couple and their 18-month-old daughter, Tia, were living and sleeping in one room to reduce heating bills. They resorted to borrowing a tin of soup from their neighbours to stop little Tia going hungry. When the foodbank delivered an emergency foodbox to the delighted family there was ice on the inside of their windows.

‘I don't know what we would have done next if it wasn’t for the foodbank' says Danny.

It takes A Real Hero to Stand up To Hunger

#wescarehunger

On Thursday 12th June we are holding a food drive in school to support our local foodbank. This is part of the Free the Children charity, ‘We Scare Hunger’ campaign. Millions of people around the world go hungry every day, even in the UK. Together, we can help feed people in need, build a stronger neighbourhood and stop hunger before it strikes.

As it takes a real hero to stand up to hunger next Thursday we are asking all pupils to come to school dressed as their favourite superhero and bring in an item of long life food from the following list;

Milk (UHT or powdered)
Sugar (500g)
Fruit juice (carton)
Soup
Pasta sauces
Sponge pudding (tinned)
Tomatoes (tinned)
Cereals
Rice pudding (tinned0
Tea bags / Instant coffee
Instant mash potato
Tinned meat / fish
Tinned fruit
Jam
Biscuits or snack bars

There will be prizes for best costume and for the class who donate the most food.

Keep an eye on the blog for more information and updates about the campaign.
