Reading in Reception

As we approach the last half of the summer term, we wanted to remind parents of the Broadford reading  scheme;  105 Books to read before you leave Broadford Primary.  

At Broadford, we aim to encourage a love of reading. By providing our pupils with quality texts and introducing them to strong characters, we can broaden their perspectives on the world around them as they are taken to far off lands from the comfort of their own chair!

As the children progress through the reading scheme they will have the opportunity to collect three certificates - bronze, silver and gold for every five books they read.

Below are the 15 books they children should read in the repletion year.

Children are issued with a reading tracker as pictured below

We have lots of children who are already working their way through the fifteen books and some children who have completed it already. We have copies of all the books within the reception year group, so please let us know which books your child needs to read in order to complete their tracker and we will send a copy home.

If you have misplaced your child's reading tracker, please speak their class teacher who will happily provide you with another.

Daily Reading

Learning to read can be hard work for many children, so it’s important to keep enjoying books together and where possible on a daily basis. In reception, we send children home with a 'bedtime' reading book each week, this allows your child to benefit from listening to books and stories that they can’t read themselves yet.  Children are also sent home with a RWI home reading book that matches exactly the phonics the child is learning about in their RWI lessons. This helps the children to practice and consolidate the sounds and words they have already learnt and the ones any new ones they have just been taught.

Please ensure you read daily with your child at home and record this in their individual reading record and return their reading folder on their reading day. 

Storytimes matters

Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. When the rhythm and melody of language become a part of a child's life, learning to read will be as natural as learning to walk and talk.

Even after children learn to read by themselves, it's still important for you to read aloud together. By reading stories that are on their interest level, but beyond their reading level, you can stretch young readers' understanding and motivate them to improve their skills.

Maths 

This week, the children have been comparing numbers to 5.  They have had lots of opportunities to explore and understand that when comparing numbers, one quantity can be more than, the same as or fewer than another quantity. 

How to support your child this week at home.

Play the finger count and compare game with your child. Both of you should hide one hand behind your back and hold up a number of fingers (up to 5). Say "Ready, Steady, Go!' and then show your hands.  Who is holding up more fingers?  Play the game again Can you show a different number of fingers? Who is holding up more fingers this time?

Key Vocabulary: Compare, more than, less than, same, order.

Literacy

In literacy this week, we have continued to read and explore the story of The Three Little Pigs. 

The children have been learning and using lots of new describing words (adjectives) to describe and label a picture if the big bad wolf.

The children have been role playing with story puppets and face masks and retelling the traditional tale in their own words. They have had great fun role playing and retelling the story.

Key Vocabulary: big beady eyes, pointy claws, sharp teeth, black nose, bushy tail.

Bentley- "He has a big bushy tail"

Ambica- "He has sharp teeth"

Tiger-Lily: I'll huff and puff and blow your house down"

Jace: "Look it's the big bad wolf, he's scary"

Home Corner

The children love the home corner in Reception and it is always full of children playing and exploring. By providing a setting for role play, the home corner allows children to make sense of their immediate world. Children have numerous opportunities to work together, express their feelings, and use language to communicate roles and respond to one another's needs and requests.

Covid-19 

If your child displays coronavirus symptoms including a cough or temperature they will need to follow government test and isolation policies, including track and trace. Please inform the school office as soon as possible if you or your child displays symptoms or tests positive for covid.

Please do not send them into the nursery or on school grounds to prevent further spread of the virus until you have followed government guidance.

 Important information

To all parents:

Can Parents please bring in a CUP, Wellington boots and a drawstring bag with spare clothes to stay at nursery if not done so already. Please LABEL  all your children's belongings, including both shoes. Please ensure your child knows what their cup and wellies look like. 

Please do not send your child in with a school bag as we have very limited space and all spare clothing should be stored in the nursery. Please do not send your child in with water bottles as we have cups stored in the nursery.

Most importantly please do not allow children to bring toys from home into the nursery as they may get lost, cause conflict with other children or become a dangerous hazard. All resources in the nursery are risk assessed and age appropriate to maintain the children's safety.

From Friday 21st January 2022 all children will receive books for you to read with them at home. Early reading ignites creativity, sparks curiosity, and stimulates the imagination in young children. Sharing books, stories and rhymes develops skills to support the transition to school.

Books will be sent home every FRIDAY.

Please return all books by WEDNESDAY.

Unfortunately books which are lost or damaged will need to be paid for.

PLEASE RETURN THE BOOKS EACH WEEK. 

All books will need to be returned in the last week of each term.

Our topic focused learning

This week the children have been settling back into the nursery routine after enjoying family time over the christmas holidays. The children have settled back extremely well, expressing their emotions of excitement to see friends and teachers, as well as missing spending time at home. We have focused our learning around our favourite activities to support the childrens return to school, including books around starting school or missing home.

We politely ask if you have any unwanted bath bombs we would very much appreciate if we could have them please? They will be used with the children in their water play.

Reception application deadline: 15th January 2022

If your child was born between 1 September 2017 and 31 August 2018 you have until 15th January 2022 to complete the application form. Parents residing in Havering should complete the Common Application Form (CAF) online via the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions.org.uk). Parents who require support to complete the CAF can contact the school admissions team on 01708 434600 for assistance. Parents may list up to 6 preferred schools that they wish their child to be considered for within or outside Havering and rank them in order of preference.

Two year old focus

This week the children have been recalling their knowledge. We have been naming colours, building characters using lego and retelling stories using actions. The children have had lots of fun showing teachers what they can do. 

“Dinosaurs gos RAAaaaa” Said Nusayr	Mason tried to name the colours of the pens to his teacher
Emir enjoyed pretending to roll the dough like the Lady in the story	Nusayr recalled the Fall leaves Fall story and said “look the wind is blowing the leaves”

Our topic focused learning

This week the children enjoyed going on a bear hunt, learning how bubbles are created and blowing bubbles. We have been practicing our team work to create large structures outdoors and using our strength to move large resources. The children really loved having our year 6 OPAL Play leaders in nursery everyday. The year 6 children read stories, played hide and seek and helped creativity using play dough and crafts. What a fun week we had!

This week one of our own nursery children has been raising awareness for PFV (Persistent Fetal Vasculature) , a cause close to her own heart. As a setting we encourage all of our pupils to support and embrace each other's differences whilst promoting equality and acceptance.

Important Christmas Performance information

Lapland day

We are excited to tell you about an up coming event in school which we are calling  Lapland Day! This will take place during the day on Tuesday 14th December. The day will be full of fun festivities, including baking, making, cutting, crafting and festive themed games! 

The children are invited to wear Christmas accessories (Christmas hats, antlers, tinsel etc.) but should wear their school uniform and the day will be full of messy fun!

We will end the day each session with hot chocolate and a Christmas bedtime story.
