Maths in the Early Years

The children have been enjoying our daily maths sessions in Reception and it is great to see the progress they have made. They have been practicing the skills they have learnt in their play; look at some of the activities they have been completing recently.

Polina made her own repeating pattern.

The children were able to match a quantity to a numeral and showed 1:1 correspondence.
They have been playing games and counting our scores. They've even began to record their scores.

They have been building with and exploring 3D shapes, they have been able to spot the 2D shapes we learnt about in the faces.
Finding and ordering numbers outside.
Making pictures with 2D shapes.
Counting using instruments!

Aliens Love Underpants

The children in Reception have been enjoying listening to the story 'Aliens love Underpants'. Yesterday they wrote some great letters to the Aliens telling them to stop stealing things off our washing lines. It is clear they are doing really well in their Read, Write, Inc lessons as their mark making was fantastic. They were able to count the number of words in their sentences and were able to hear the initial sounds in words. Some children were even able to sound out their words. Well done Reception!

Science in Reception

The children in Apple and Aspen have been experimenting to see how food changes when we heat it, cool it or leave it to decay. During our experiment we made jelly, looked at how an apple changes as it decays, compared raw eggs to cooked eggs and toast to bread. They have been looking closely at the similarities and differences and have asked some great 'how' and 'why' questions. Well done reception!

New Finger Gym

We continue to encourage the children to exercise their finger muscles and strengthen them. This weeks challenge is to use the tweezers to move the beans from the box to the bowls.

The Reading at home continues....,

The Christmas shop

The children have loved their first day in the Christmas shop.  They will develop their speech, language and understanding by having conversations.  There will also be opportunities to explore numbers and shapes.  Furthermore there are mark making opportnities when writing cards and lists.  The can also develop fine motor skills by wrapping presents etc.

Nursery Learning Challenge

One of our morning nursery children, Elizabeth, has been extending her learning at home by completing  a learning challenge including the nursery rhyme Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star with her Mummy.  She drew a sun, a moon and some twinkling stars.  Not only can Elizabeth recite the rhyme, she also found out some amazing facts about stars.  Stars are big balls of gas including the sun and they appear to be very small as they are far away.  What a fantastic achievement Elizabeth.  Well done!

Reminder Read, Write, Inc stay and play tomorrow

Please remember that tomorrow morning we are inviting parents to come and watch us teach Read, Write, Inc to see how we teach sounds and get some tips for activities which you can do with your children to support our scheme.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Nursery finger gym

This weeks challenge to get their little finger muscles flexing is to pick up the buttons and put them on the coats.

Nursery Independence Skills

We are trying to encourage the children to develop their independence skills.  We have created a new display above to coat rack; we intend to use this to record the childrens achievements with independence skills.  We are encouraging the children to put their own coats on at the moment, please help your child practise at home and we will do the same. When the children have demonstrated that they can put their own coat on with out any help we will place their photo on the display.  When most of the children have achieved this we will change the objective.

All of these children have already demonstrated for us that they can put their own coats on, well done!

Nursery Creations

Wow Amber you were extremely creative today. Amber definitely has a flare for arts and crafts.  This afternoon she selected her own materials and set herself the project of making a 'Monster'! She independently cut pieces of paper and stuck them to the egg box which was the monsters head.
She was then able to talk about her monster.

The Nursery Reading at home continues to blossom!

It's great to see so many of you are still borrowing books. We are also still getting many book reviews back. Thank you for your support.
