Reception: What We Are Learning 

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus book was Rama and Sita.

Here is what we have been up to: The children learnt all about the Hindu Festival of Light: Diwali. We read the story of Rama and Sita. We learnt about Diwali and how Hindus and Sikhs celebrate the festival. They were able to describe how Sita was feeling during the story using emotion cards such as happy, sad or scared. The children made diyas using clay and painted and decorated them beautifully. 

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc his week. The children have all been assessed and are now working in groups based on this. The children have worked hard this week to write the initial sounds that they can hear in words. We talked about what sounds fireworks make such as whizz, bang, whoosh and the children worked hard to write the initial sounds for example p for pop! Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have worked hard to find one more and one less. They were able to say what one more and one less of the numbers 1, 2 and 3 were.

Important reminders 

• Thursday 12th October is school photo day. The individual photos will be taken during your child's nursery session. If you require a sibling photo, you must turn come to the school office between 7:45 and 8:45. If you miss this time you will be unable to have a sibling photo as the photographers work on a very tight schedule. 

• Please ensure everything that your child brings into nursery has a name label on it.

• Please remember to take your child's reading folder out of their bag and place it in the box when they come in on Thursdays. Reading books are changed with the children every Friday as part of our Bedtime Reading scheme.

• Evidence Me-Over the next month we will start sharing observations on our parent share app. Please do add your own videos and photos from home as parents can also share achievements. 

We have had another amazing week in Nursery. We have loved seeing the children grow in confidence, transitioning into the nursery with big smiles and becoming familiar with their environment.  Below you can see some of the activities we have been getting up to.

What brilliant pattern making from some of our children in the maths area. We have been exploring colours and look at how they can make patterns. It was great to see the children working independently on this after being shown what to do. 

The home corner got lots of use as usually this week. The children were cooking up a storm in their new restaurant and there were plenty of mouths to feed! Our key vocabulary this week was 'please' and 'thank you' which the children were encouraged to use in their play... 

'Please can I have...?

'Thank you for coming...'

'Can I take your order please?'

'Thank you for my delicious food.'

There was lots of fun in the water this week when we had a bubble explosion in our outdoor  area. The children loved exploring the water with the bubble in it, pouring them, seeing if they could make it travel down the guttering and even using the bubbles in our mud kitchen. 

Our two year olds are always keen to show us their skills and this week we were treated to hoop tricks and fast bikes! 

The outdoors was very popular this week as the sun was shining, which allowed the children to explore the resources. These panels are usually used to build tunnels but the children decided that they waned to make an obstacle course on the floor with them. This then turned into a game of 'the floor is lava'. 

Our snack area is always popular and this week the children loved making their own snack. We focused on the skill of spreading, using butter, jam and marmalade with a knife. 

The children loved the independence of being able to make their own snack. Look at these lovely, happy faces as they tuck into their scrumptious bagels.

Nursery learning 19th-23rd June

 

Important notice: 

On Tuesday 11th July we will be having a pirate dress up day to celebrate of pirate topic. We look forward to seeing the children in their outfits.

We love playing with water outside in the sunny weather. To keep the children safe can all parents please apply water resistant sun cream before attending nursery. Please ensure each child wears a sun hat and has spare clothing in nursery at all times.

Reminder:

 

The Nursery entrance is open 8.30- 8.55 am and 12.15- 12.25pm. After these times all children must be registered at the school office.

Collection takes place from 11.20 - 11.30am and 3.05 - 3.15pm. Please contact the school office if you are late or someone else is collecting. After these times children will be taken to the school library and collection will be from the main school office. 

The nursery team politely remind parents please do not send children into nursery with toys from home. We have a fun selection of resources for the children to play with.

This weeks focus topic: 

This weeks focus story has been Commotion in the Ocean. The children have enjoyed learning about different mammals which live in the Ocean. Please click the link if you wish to watch the story at home with your Children: Commotion in the Ocean

The children have continued their learning about under the sea. We have used our rice play to support our math's and science learning on numbers and shapes, space and measure. 

Vienna counted how many handfuls it took to fill her cup, Patrick scooped rice in his hand to fill his cup, whilst Harley-jean used the small scoop to fill her cup. The children then discussed the number of times they scooped to fill their cups.

Little chefs 

This week the children have been working hard at the snack table making Strawberry ice lollies. We chopped, crushed, mixed and poured our ingredients into moulds, then learnt how fluids change from liquid to solids when frozen, as we put our ingredients in the freezer. 

The children loved making and tasting their strawberry ice lollies. To ensure all children could take a turn we used milk substitutes for those unable to consume dairy products.

Ten Town Focus 

This week the children have been learning about Thelma five from ten town. We have practiced forming our number 5 formation and our number bonds to 5.

The children have been practicing our numbers counting a variety of objects during play. Some children are now able to subitise (the ability to look at a small number of objects and instantly recognise how many objects there are without needing to count).

Special mentions to Leonor for bringing in her very big runner bean which she has continued growing at home and to Oscar for using the alphabet resources to independently spell his name. Emir M, Mariam and Afrahim worked very hard to create and extend their ideas using the construction.

We have had lots of out door fun this week playing in the water area with our car wash, being resourceful creating games with our toys and having super fun watch the builders user exciting machinery like the excavator.  

We have been working hard to stay cool and refreshed at nursery, taking turns to make sure we stay hydrated.

The children have enjoyed caring for our strawberry plants. This week some of our strawberries were ready to eat. A few helpers carefully picked their strawberries, washed and tasted them. The children spoke about the difference in taste from our shop bought strawberries we had used for our snack activity and our nursery grown strawberries.

This week the Children opened an Ice cream shop at nursery. They have had lots of fun during their role play, discussing flavours of ice cream, how ice cream is made and their home experiences. The children have been learning how we use money to buy things and have been learning how to successfully exchange money for items they wish to buy in our shop. We have been counting, adding and subtracting, subitising and working together as shopkeepers and customers. We have also practised our rhyming sounds and played numeracy bingo.

Reception transition

This week our nursery leavers have been taking about their journey to reception. We have been discussing our ideas of what reception may be like, and the children have been thinking of questions to ask their new teachers. Some of the questions were about their friends and some about their favourite activities. Overall the children seemed confident about their move and very excited to play on the big reception slide. 

Focus skill of the week

This week the children have continued practising our turn taking steps to communicate with peers and resolve conflict. By using the turn taking steps the children have been working through their big emotions, identifying how they feel and what they could do to make themselves or others feel better. We have been using the zones of regulation to support our understanding of Big emotions and its tool box concept- which is the activity to help improve how we feel. Please feel free to use our turn taking steps at home.

 

2 year old fun

This week the blue group have been focusing on the farm. They have been identifying animals by name, learning about where they live and who looks after them.

This week we had fun:

This week the children had lots of fun learning through play. We developed our social and communication skills during imaginative role play games in the play house, practiced our big body movements; rolling, jumping and climbing in the garden and used paint outdoors to express our creativity.

We have had fun developing our fine motor skills for handwriting, using scissors and a variety of different sized markers. Madison and Mason even pretended to be teachers and could be heard saying "I'm Miss St Louis, who do you want to be? Mrs Light?".

At the art table the children have been experimenting with different mediums for marking. Sandpaper has been a favourite. Sadhana explained to her teacher how she drew around her hand to create a fish shape for her picture, then used coloured crayons to create a rainbow fish. Archie was very proud to show his teachers his picture of a rocket blasting into space.

Our nursery children love to cook and this week used a variety of tools to chop, great and slice fruit and vegetables to create their own individual salads. We tasted new foods and discussed topics including; how we grow fruit and veg, eating healthy and foods we like and dislike.

 

The nursery team would like to shine light on our very special helper Ajus. After a very hot weekend Ajus asked if he could water the strawberry plants as they need water to grow, and as he was at home the plants will be thirsty. Thank you to Ajus for caring for our nursery plants.

This week we received our delivery for the mud kitchen. The children have had an amazing time helping clean and rearrange the mud kitchen area, including a special helper Azlan, taking time to help sweep the mud area. From rolling tyres, sweeping the mud and washing the resources the children really engaged in working together to make our nursery environment a lovely place to play. With a special thanks to Oscar, Isaac, Leonor, Patrick, Violet and Harley- Jean for all your help.

The children have loved playing in the mud kitchen as a result and have been busy making a selection of strange and wacky concoctions.

Luna was playing in the mud kitchen and showed her teacher how she could break the clump of mud. Luna used the terms whole and half to talk about the mud and counted how many pieces she had, and was introduced to the idea of thirds and quarters.   

Viola helped her friends at the water trays, showing them how to use a bucket to efficiently scoop water for the ramps, reducing the need for several trips back to the tray. 

The children enjoyed playing with the small world toys under the canopy. They used accents to develop their dolls character, created a narrative for their character and successfully took turns back and forth speaking and listening to each other to progress their game. Their role play had a start, middle and end, then they developed a new narrative developing their ideas.

Important notice: 

Can all children please wear water resistant sun cream and sun hats to school. We have lots of fun in our garden and wish the children remain safe during their play. 

Can all children please have spare clothes in nursery. The children will be playing in the Splash pool now the weather is warmer.

This weeks focus topic:

This week the children have been learning about creatures under the sea. We have been learning how to keep safe in the sea, pollution in the Ocean, Naming sea creatures and their habitats, as well as listening to our book of the week: Hooray for fish.

We have used our topic to develop our knowledge in math's by catching and counting fish using our fishing game, expressive arts by drawing and painting pictures using fish pictures and physical development by manipulating playdough.

This week we had fun:

This week the children had lots of fun playing in the garden, creating structures by working together, playing the floor is lava, building dens and obstacle courses and riding bikes.

The children have really loved playing in the splash pool! 

The children were very excited to learn how the splash pool works and especially loved taking there shoes and socks off and splashing in the water. We discovered we could create a current in the water causing the boats to travel down the canal and how add more water made the splashing extra fun with our friends.

Nursery stay and play day

The nursery team and the children would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who attended the stay and play sessions. The children really enjoyed sharing their nursery experiences, showing family members what they like to play with at nursery and introducing their friends. 

We hope you were able to see some of the amazing opportunities we provide the children to develop their learning, relationships and most importantly how much fun we have here at Broadford Nursery.
