RECEPTION LEARNING - SPRING 1 WEEK 6

Maths 

This week, the children have been combining two groups to find how many altogether. They have been give lots of opportunities using real objects and in different contexts to explore and apply the skills they have learnt. In class we have used a part-whole model to help the children to understand the relationships between a number and its component parts. The part-whole models helps to illustrate the building blocks of mathematics in a way that children will understand and remember.

How to support your child this week at home.

Encourage your child to combine two groups of objects to find how many altogether. You could use the part whole model at home and draw it on to a piece of paper to help them.

As your child to write the number sentences to show the number problems.

Literacy

In literacy this week, we have continued with the story Goldilocks and the three bears.   The Early Years Curriculum requires children in reception to be able to articulate their ideas using well formed sentences.  The children have been articulating their ideas in their writing by writing letters to the three bears. They have also been retelling their own version of the traditional tale.  We have seen some great retell's this week. Great work reception!

Key Vocabulary: Goldilocks, three bears, Baby Bear, Mummy Bear, porridge, bed, chair, sleep, hot.

Art

Linking in with our Topic, the children have made their own bear to go in to their special books. 

The collaged the pieces of brown paper for the bear's fur and added on some ears and then drew on their bear's face.  

The children are making good progress in Read, Write, Inc. We would like to thank you for all your continued support at home with your child's reading. Please continue to read daily with them and bring their reading folders into school on their reading day.  If you are unsure of their reading day, please check with their class teacher.

Read, Write, Inc assessments were carried our this week in school, if your child was absent from school there assessment will be carried out on the first week back after half term.

 Please trying to read with them daily over the half term break, trying sounding our words when out and about... sign posts or labels on items in shops.

Reception Learning - Week 1 Autumn 

Key Information 

• Alder Class warmly welcomes Miss Onabiya, who will be working alongside Miss Chappel for this term before taking over in January when Miss Chappel goes on maternity leave. 
• Please send your child in with 50p, £1 or £1.50 if they would like to buy any of the poppy merchandise. 
• Children in need is on Friday 19th November - Please bring a £1 donation per family if you can. This will be a non-uniform day so feel free to wear - spotty clothes, bright colours etc

Maths 

This week we are introducing the idea that all numbers are made up of smaller numbers. They have been exploring and noticing the different compositions of the number 2, 3, 4 and 5. Have a look at our children exploring the numbers below using a range of maths resources 

Key Vocabulary: add, together, same, matching, equals

Lucas- "I did it!"

Roza- "2+3=5"

Mikail: "Three add two makes five"

Alice:  "Equals (=) is when you add one number and one number and it makes a big number"

Isabelle ' I can use my numicon to make 5. I can do it lots of ways.' 

Livai ' I can make all the numbers to 10 using my numicon. I can count them all.'

Literacy

This week we looked at how Hindus celebrate Diwali. The children watched some videos of some amazing firework displays. We closed our eyes and spoke about what sounds we could here. We then took these words and sounded them out carefully using the sounds that we have been learning. We then turned out writing into colourful posters!

Key Vocabulary:  crack, boom, pop, his, whiz, hum

Art

This week we have been focusing on the Hindu celebration Diwali - the annual festival of light held every autumn. The children will be learning about the story Rama and Sita. Rama rescuing Sita from a demon King Ravana with the help of Hanuman and his monkey army.

As part of our story immersion, the children will be disigning, making and decorationg diva lamps.

Reception Celebrate Black History Month

This month, we have been celebrating Black History Month, we have looked at the themes of African-Caribbean history, achievements and experiences. This has provided us with opportunities to make connections between different lives and cultures and also looking at the themes of similarities and differences.

Through our topic books, we have focused on Personal, Social and Emotional Development and looked at the themes of similarities and differences. We have spoken about all of the things which make us special Super Duper You! and also similarities and differences between us Blue Penguin. 

As part of our Black History Month work, each class focused on a different text and created art work related to their chosen book.

Apple Class:

In Apple Class, we read the story 'Whoever You Are.'  The story explores how children around the world live in a variety of homes and speak different languages, but, inside they're all the same.  It celebrates how children are different yet similar and how this brings us together.  The children added their hand prints around the world to celebrate the message of the story, that children across the world may be different in some ways, but we are all the same when it comes to the important things in life. 

Robyn: "We are all the same."

Nyasa: "This is us around the earth."

Ryan: "We need to be kind to everyone."

Aspen Class: 

This week we have read the story, ' We All Went on Safari: A Counting Journey Through Tanzania'. The children enjoyed listening to the story and joined in with repeated phrases. They were quick to work out the counting theme throughout the story and predicting which animals might be next. The children were able to recognise the similarities and differences of where they live and how they dress compared to the characters in the story. They enjoyed the rhyming text and counting in both English and Swahili.  Inspired by the illustrations the children created beautiful necklaces with beading and paints.

Alder Class: 

In Alder Class, we read the story 'Coming to England', which celebrates the Windrush generation and explores the life of Floella Benjamin, who set sail from Trinidad to begin a new life in London. The children discovered that life was not all that nice for Floella when she first arrived but; little by little she settled in and England soon began to feel like home.  To celebrate her story, the children created flags to acknowledge her brave journey.

Nursery Newsletter 12.03.18

Dear Parent/Carer,

Last week the children really enjoyed celebrating 'World Book Day'.
Apart from wearing fabulous dressing up costumes the children spoke
about their favourite stories and characters. They drew some fantastic
pictures of this which you can see as you walk into Nursery.
We look forward to welcoming parents to our Maths Stay and Play session on
Thursday.
Well done to Ryan and Alex who have completed this half term's learning
challenge. You still have time to complete this, we would love to display
more of the children's wonderful work outside Nursery on the 'Learning
Challenge' board.

Art

This week the children will be looking at the story of 'The Hungry Caterpillar'
They have collage materials available to re-create their own versions of the
illustrations in the book.

Mathematics

This week we will continue our ten town programme and focus on learning how
to recognise and form '3 and 4'.

Physical

In their weekly PE lessons the children will be learning how to throw
and catch small soft balls.

Snack

The children will be be tasting a variety of fruit to create their own fruit cocktails.

Communication and Language

Encouraging children to use simple sentences correctly.

Encouraging children to hold a conversation and respond to comments.

We will focus on rhyming words for the next two weeks. Please encourage
your child to find rhyming words in stories and point them out.

Understanding of the World

In the home corner we will be giving the children opportunities to re-enact
experiences and talk about their home lives.
The children will be learning how seeds grow and growing their own cress seeds.

Personal and Social Development

Ensuring children are able to co-operate with routines and some boundaries.

Modelling the correct behaviours in play, ensuring children use resources well
and begin to share with other children.

Messages

A few weeks ago we had a report of threadworm in EYFS. To control the spread
of this it is important children regularly wash their hands well. We will continue to
make new playdough with the children every day and ensure equipment is thoroughly
sterilized after use to ensure this is not spread in Nursery.

Amelie our Transient Artist 😄

As previously mentioned our Transient Art Resources are a great way for children to develop many creative and mathematical skills. Amelie took great care over this beautiful piece of art.  She has clearly demonstrated an understanding of size, texture, shape and pattern.

Whoosh! Fizz! Pop! Bang!

The children in reception have been busy looking at Guy Fawkes and Bonfire night this week for their topic. They've enjoyed making their own fireworks with marbles, paint and lots of glitter. The marbles were a bit fiddly to pick up especially when covered in paint, which was great for the children's fine motor control. We have also been using lots of chalk on black paper, making fireworks on the computers and thinking of words to describe fireworks.

The children are excited to sing songs around he bonfire later this week!

Wow Blake, a fantastic effort! Look at these amazing people who help us models! There is some super writing on there too.

Ambers Amazing Creation..

Amber in the Nursery is constantly crafting...she's always got an idea that she needs very little support to make. She gathers resources and makes the most amazing models. This one was made totally independently! Amber described it as "A girl owl wearing a Christmas hat".

Colour mixing outdoors

The Nursery children had great fun mixing coloured paint in the puddles today. The children mixed yellow and blue to make green.

Nursery Creations

Wow Amber you were extremely creative today. Amber definitely has a flare for arts and crafts.  This afternoon she selected her own materials and set herself the project of making a 'Monster'! She independently cut pieces of paper and stuck them to the egg box which was the monsters head. 

She was then able to talk about her monster.

Diwali in the Nursery

In the Nursery we like to value and show an interest in all cultures and religions.  This week is Diwali and the children had an opportunity to create mehndi patterns.

Nursery Homes

The nursery children had great fun making their homes from cardboard boxes and various materials.  They spoke about needing doors, windows and roof's and made connections between their movement and marks they made.  The children are beginning to develop their skills by demonstrating a sense of self as an individual and by wanting to do things independently.

Aspen class rise to the challenge!!

It all started with a paper boat.  Adam's personal interest of origami has overflowed into Aspen class and now many children are enjoying the challenge of origami, which is all thanks to Mr Drakes for buying us an origami book. The children are relishing the challenge and have been displaying excellent resilience and reciprocity skills whilst working together.

Mark making on a large scale

Great fun was had exploring the our new outdoor paint rollers. Each roller is engrained with a different pattern. The rollers were also brilliant for rolling through puddles to explore colour mixing.
