Reception Fairy Tale Dress Up Day

 Fairy Tale dress up day

Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our topic this term, we will be incorporating a ‘Fairy Tale day,’ where your child can come to school dressed as their favourite character. This will only be for Reception class children and will take place on Friday 14th February.

Some suggestions are: Little Red Riding Hood, a wolf, Goldilocks, a prince, Peter Pan, Cinderella, the Gingerbread Man, Aladdin, Tiana, Snow White.

Your child will not need school uniform on this day, however, we do suggest bringing in jumpers and coats as the children will be outside during parts of the day. Please remember to send your child in sensible and enclosed shoes.

Thank you.

Reception Trip

Date: Friday 27th May 2022.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Reception children on Monday 11th July 2022. We will be visiting the Sealife Centre in Southend.

On Monday 11th July 2022, all children are expected at school on time, so that we can leave promptly at 9:30am. We will be travelling by coach and expect to arrive back at school by 3pm - we will ensure to keep parents updated on our whereabouts via the school's Facebook page.

Children are required to wear school uniform; please ensure that all children wear appropriate footwear and have a waterproof coat. The weather is likely to be warm, so please ensure your child has a sun hat and has had sun cream applied.  We will be eating lunch at the Sealife Centre, so all children will need to take a packed lunch with them. Should your child require a lunch provided by the school, please indicate their preferences on the form below. All lunch orders must be completed by Friday 24th June 2022, so that we can process your order in time for your child’s trip. Alternatively, children can bring their own packed lunch in a carrier bag that is clearly labelled with their name and class.

The Reception trip will incur a voluntary charge of £12 per child that should be paid via sQuid. This charge covers the coach transport and their entry to the Southend Sealife Centre. To make payment log on to your sQuid account and follow the steps provided.

Please either complete the form attached to this letter and return to the class teacher, or scan this QR code and complete it online (it should take no more than a couple of minutes).

We look forward to a wonderful day out!

Yours faithfully,

Inset Day - School Closed-Monday 6th June 2022

Maths

In maths, the children have been exploring number bonds to twenty.  This week we introduced the bar model to support learning numbers to 20.

The bar model supports understanding of the relationship between addition and subtraction in that both can be seen within the one representation and viewed as different ways of looking at the same relationships.

The examples above illustrates how the bar might be used for addition and subtraction problems. A question mark is used to indicate the part that is unknown.

Key Vocabulary: Number bond, bar model add, altogether, equal.

Eva:  "Four and three makes seven"

Mateo: " Ten plus two makes twelve"

Livai “ 5 add 5 is 10”

Zarrar “ 6 and 4 is 10”

Success:  "five and five makes ten"

Tiger Lily " It's FIVVVVVVEEEE!"

Literacy

This week, we continued reading Tadpoles promise. This is a story about is about a tadpole who meets a beautiful caterpillar and they fall in love with each other. The shiny black tadpole promised the rainbow caterpillar that he would never change but that was not a promise he could keep.

Soon the tadpole changed. He grew two legs and then he developed two arms. His tail vanished and he became a frog. The butterfly could not recognise him. She cried herself to sleep because she was so upset. Surprisingly, she changed too… into a magnificent butterfly! Then something you would never expect happened. The frog leapt out the water and ate the beautiful Butterfly.

Our literacy task this week  researching facts about frogs.  We discussed as a class different ways to retrieve information, the children were great in telling the teachers that information can be retrieved from books, computers, Alexa, Google, and the TV.

Key Vocabulary: tadpole, froglet, frog, butterfly, willow

Ameera “The frog is green and has two big eyes”

Abdul Hafiiz “Frogs live in the wet and dry”

Emma: "Frogs eat insects"

Nikita " Frogs are green and slimy"

Noah: 'Frogs live in the pond'

Ronnie: 'Frogs have big eyes"

Tadpole Update

The children have been checking in on the tadpoles daily and observing the changes as they grow from tadpoles to frogs.  They have thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow.

On Friday, Miss Mullan is going to return the little froglets to the pond and we will pop down to see them when they've grown fully into frogs.

Emily “Tadpoles turn into froglets then adult frogs”

Ameera “ I caught two tadpoles”

Mikail: "that one has got legs...look!"

Alfie: " They are actually really cool frogs...  I like them alot"

Lochlan: "They are bigger now"

People who help us

We were very lucky in reception to have some police officers and special constables visit.
They told the children all about their jobs and how they help people in the local community.  The children had lots and lots of questions and the police officers answered as many as they could.

They showed the children their cufflinks, radios and body cameras. One police office even let the children try on his jacket

Finely: "I want to be a police car man when I grow up, they go fast "

Kai “I want to be a police man when I’m older”

Mrs Hathaway:  "Wow, I can't believe how heavy this coat is," how do you run in this?

Tiger -Lily: "I saw a police car at Tesco's"

Reception Curriculum Letter - Summer Term

 Learning Federation - Schools.png

             Term: Summer

Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome back to the Summer term from the Reception team!

We hope you find this curriculum letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries using our reception mailbox:  reception@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Maths

Our focus on learning this term will be numbers beyond ten, adding and subtracting numbers, doubling and sharing and grouping. The children will use a range of resources to show their mathematical thinking and will practice and revisit concepts until they are confident enough to apply the skills independently to a range of situations and talk about their process. Throughout the term, children will continue to practice and consolidate key skills in subitising, counting, composition, sorting and matching and comparing and ordering numbers.

Literacy

Stories are a key part of our curriculum and high quality texts will be used throughout the day to foster the children’s love of reading. This half term we will be reading a selection of stories linked to our theme of growing and changing; Jasper’s Beanstalk, Tadpoles Promise, The Hungry Caterpillar. After Half term we will be reading Handa’s Surprise, The Gruffalo and Lost & Found.  The children will continue to develop their writing skills, writing simple phrases and sentences that can be read by others. Please continue to support your children at home, encouraging them to write their name, a shopping list or even write a story.

The children’s reading is progressing well, with some strong sound recognition and blending skills. The more they practice these skills the more fluent your child will become at decoding words, this then allows them to develop their comprehension skills. Try to make reading a part of your daily routine, finding a time that fits in with your schedules at home. This could be when you first get home from school or after dinner. Record this is in your child’s reading record, for it to be counted towards awards and certificates.  Encourage your children to take part in the 105 Books to read before you leave Broadford challenge. Please remember to bring your child’s reading folder into school on their reading day.

Phonics

The children have made good progress in our RWI programme. We will be continuing to develop oral blending skills (Fred Talk) and using these skills to help spell words (using Fred Fingers). Please refer to the video links below for more information.

Read, Write, Inc: Sound Blending Help Video

Read, Write, Inc: Spelling with Fred Fingers Help Video

We practise letter formation every day in Reception but your child will greatly benefit from 1:1 practice at home alongside this. If you are able to support your child in this way, please watch this short clip on letter formation so you teach the correct phrase alongside each sound: Letter Formation Rhymes.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
To support the development of the children’s personal, social and emotional skills, we will continue to explore the Zones of Regulation.  This term the children will complete their own toolbox which they will bring home. The tool box is a visual representation of strategies the children can use to support them in each zone and how to support them getting back into the green zone.

The  Zones of Regulation is a framework that uses four colours: blue, green, yellow and red to help them identify their feelings. The children are then given a range of tools to help them regulate themselves and deal with the different feelings and emotions that they will be experiencing. In Reception, we explore the Zones of Regulation through our adult carpet times and through stories and try to explore a different zone each week.

Understanding the World.

During this term, the children will be exploring the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants. We will be making a visit to our school pond to see the tadpoles as part of the Tadpole’s Promise theme. Linking to our growing and changing theme, each child will be planting their own bean and sunflowers.

Each class will be growing their own butterflies and we will be watching closely and observing the changes as the  caterpillars grow and change into beautiful butterflies.  We now have a wormery in Reception. The children have helped to make the wormery and are enjoying  adding worms to it and observing the worm tunnel system.

Arts & Design

This term the children will  continue to explore their creativity in an environment where they won’t be tested on their skills, choice or technique. They will be encouraged to participate in activities that offer them opportunities to experiment and have fun.  They will continue to safely use and explore  a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.  As part of our growing and changing theme, the children will complete observational drawing of a sunflower.  Children will also have the opportunity to design and make an African necklace to celebrate the story; Handa’s Surprise.

As part of the Queen's Jubilee Year, the children will  have the opportunity to design an emblem to represent her jubilee. Alongside this we will be making bunting and decorations to decorate the Reception environment as part of our whole school celebrations.

This weeks learning

This week’s literacy focus has been encouraging the children to say what they liked and disliked about each story during group time and why. The children have been amazing at expressing their opinions, recalling the story and providing insight into the situations of the characters ie when reading “My mummy has a house in her tummy”, the children liked how the boy was excited for his new brother and was caring towards his mum when she was tired, when reading The Gingerbread Man the children liked the gingerbread man but disliked the fox and said the gingerbread man should know more about danger so he did not get eaten.

The children have been having fun making mothers day gifts using arts and craft materials.

Science week

The nursery children will be supporting the year three children to measure using non-standard units as part of their science week project. The nursery children will be measuring their height using bricks, giant blocks and A4 pictures as units of measure to count how tall they are.

The children have also been introduced to the life cycle of frogs, butterflies and humans as part of science week. The children will be learning the life cycles of frogs and butterflies in more detail in the summer term.

Red Nose day

On friday the children will be taking part on a trail walk around the school field as part of the red nose day celebrations.

2 year old focus

This week the two year olds have focussed on:

  • Communication and language: Nursery rhyme bag- 1,2,3,4,5, once i caught a fish alive

  • Physical development: practicing our fine motor skills using scissors

  • Expressive art & design: enjoy taking part in action songs using musical instruments by following rhythms.

  • Making mothers day cards.

Focus child Meetings

Focus child meetings replace parents evenings, which take place within the rest of the school. Each week children will be chosen to be observed by their keyworker. Emails will be sent home to inform parents of the upcoming parent meeting taking place the following week, either in person or via telephone. Parents will have an opportunity to complete a form asking questions and sharing concerns they may have for the key worker to answer during the parent meeting. This form will be sent via email. Please check your emails weekly for school communications and evidence me parents share from your children's teachers. Parents are welcome to upload pictures and videos of their children at home.

Chicken pox

We would like to make all parents aware that some children within the class have come down with chicken pox. Chicken pox commonly appears as small red spots which eventually blister. Chicken pox is contagious. We have included a link from the NHS with information regarding chicken pox and what to look for. Please check your children regularly for spots. Please keep children at home until the spots have cleared up to prevent further spread of the virus and seek medical attention if required.

NHS information - chicken pox

Key Information

Please LABEL  all your children's belongings, including both shoes. Please do not send your child in with a school bag as we have very limited space and all spare clothing should be stored in the nursery. Please do not send your child in with water bottles as we have cups stored in the nursery. Most importantly please do not allow children to bring toys from home into the nursery as they may get lost, cause conflict with other children or become a dangerous hazard.
