TP Challenge Outtakes!

The outtakes from our toilet paper challenge were just too good to not share with you all! It turns out catching is not our greatest strength, but we are a resilient bunch.

Keep smiling Broadford!

Reception Home Learning Week 4

Good morning Reception!

We hope you have had a great first week of the summer term. We have received some fantastic emails and photos of what you have all been up to at home. Keep them coming! It has been lovely speaking to families this week. Everyone has quickly adjusted to this new normal and we are really impressed at how you are getting on! If we haven’t got through yet, keep an eye on your phone, we will be trying again (it may be from a withheld number).

Did you see our toilet roll challenge we posted on Friday? We had lots of fun making it and hope it made you smile. How many adults could you recognise? If you haven’t seen it yet scroll down the blog or Facebook to find it.

Below are some activities for this week, some things you should do everyday and others you can choose when is best for you.

RWI Phonics

There will be a new sound taught each day along with a spelling video. Please see the below table for starting times, although they will remain on Facebook and Youtube for 24hours. Please join in every day with these videos, just search ‘Ruth Miskin Training’ on Facebook or Youtube. If you are unsure which level your child is working at please drop us an email.

They have also shared a guide for parents that contains lots of information. If you scroll down the page there are lots of online resources including books, ditty reading sheets, worksheets, videos, green word slide shows.

https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/

George and his mum created this fantastic phonics game after watching the daily speed sound lesson. They wrote out some of the sounds and red words and then attached them to the washing line (you could use a wall). They then took turns to throw a ball at the word or the sound that was called out. Mrs Hallowell played a similar game with her children but used a water pistol. This is such a fun way to practice phonics. Keep sharing your great ideas!

Maths

After speaking to some families last week some parents asked for some more support with Maths at home. Our first piece of advice is to keep it practical!

Here is an overview of what we cover in the summer term:
  • Ordering numbers to 20, saying one more or less than a given number.
  • Addition and subtraction using concrete objects (think Lego, buttons, pasta, sweets, cars) and/or a number line to support.
  • Doubling and halving numbers.
  • Measuring and comparing - weight, length, height, capacity, size.
  • Naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes.
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme at school and they have provided some lovely maths activities linked to story books. This week it is all about pirates! If you do not have the books at home, you could listen to them on YouTube. Take a look at the activities, choose the ones you would like to do and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

  • Go on a number hunt around your house. Can you say the number that is one more and one less than the number you found? You could record all the numbers you find on paper or maybe you could take photos.

  • Practice your addition using a dice (or two). Roll the dice twice and add these numbers together. Remember to use the spots on the dice to help you or concrete objects. Can you record the number sentence? You might want to draw the two dice so you have a pictorial representation to help you.

Reading

Teach Your Monster to Read
https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/

This is an interactive game where children design their own monster and complete a series of phonics and reading based games. It is free to set up an account on a computer or laptop and can also be used on tablets and phones.

We had a little play and think the children will really enjoy it. There are three different levels to start from. You can exit or close the game at any point and when you log back in it will start from the same point. It is probably a good idea to agree a time limit with your child before they start.

Oxford Owls Books
Read together everyday. This should include story times where you read to your child and times when your child reads to you. RWI have just uploaded some more free e-books which are perfect for your child to read.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/home/reading-site/find-a-book/library-page?view=image&series=Read+Write+Inc.

Writing
  • Find out about your favourite minibeast. Can you draw a picture and write some facts. Plan your sentences out loud with an adult first, can you have a go at writing them independently. You might want to use the sentence starters ‘It is….’ or ‘It has…..’
  • Write a letter to a friend or neighbour. Deliver it on your daily walk.

Other Activities:
  • Learn how to play noughts and crosses.
  • Design and make a kite from recycled materials in your house. Take it outside to test it.
  • Lay the table for lunch or dinner.
  • Make a treasure map. You could make the paper look old by scrunching it up and using a wet tea bag to paint it. This can be done before or after you draw your map.
  • Make a list of different exercises (eg. star jumps, shuttle runs, hops), how many can you do of each exercise in one minute? Who can do the most in your house?
  • Find where you live on Google maps. Can you find any other places of interest (eg. school, park, shops, swimming pool). You can look at it both as a map and a satellite

Spellings
Reception will be joining the rest of the school on Friday for the weekly spelling test. Practice writing these spelling everyday, ready for the test on Friday mornings. One of your teachers will read out these spellings in a video for you to have a go at home. We have chosen some of the red words to begin with, as these are tricky words and we use them a lot within our writing. Each Monday we will release five new spellings in this blog. You could challenge yourself to write a sentence including each of these words. Good luck!

Nursery Home Learning Week 4

Good morning Nursery!

Welcome to Week 2 of the Summer term, we hope you enjoyed last week's sunshine.
It has been lovely to talk to parents and children  on the phone this week, if you haven't heard from us we will be in touch next week. Please continue to share your learning with us either via email or Evidence Me and please do get in touch if you have any questions.

Story Challenge
The children had been developing their story skills with the support of Tales Toolkit during Nursery sessions. The idea is to support children to tell stories with a character, setting, problem and solution.

The challenge this week is to create a story with the following props. Support your child to expand their sentences e.g. in the waves can change to they jumped over the waves. The focus is on speaking a story for the children so parents can help them to draw pictures to show what is happening, write down their story or video them talking about the story. We look forward to seeing all of the stories! Children could even create their own story using resources you have in the house.

You can click and enlarge the image below to give you an example and see some questions you could ask to help your child. We do really want to hear the children's ideas so encourage them to think of their own character names and events. It could be shorter, longer and more inventive than this story there is no right or wrong in storytelling!

Shopping
Can you make a shopping centre using resources available? You could add labels to your fruit and veg or you could add prices to your cuddly toys and open a toy shop. Try to find how many your customer asks for and check they give you the right amount of coins. This does not have to be a very complicated set up, children are very resourceful and will be able to use their imagination. Try and stick to amounts the children can count and if you have real pennies and purses that is an extra bonus! Vocabulary to use: How much will it cost ? Two more please? Can I have...? Do you have any...? Can I have.... please? How many are in my shopping basket? I have 3 now, how much does it cost altogether?

Maths - Hidden Jewels
Use gems, jewels or golden coins! to create 'hide and reveal’ games that prompt children to subitise or see the number of the group without counting. See the following link to download the maths idea: https://nrich.maths.org/14002?utm_source=primary-map

Creative challenge
Create a  magic garden on a plate! https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/orchardtoys/f/pdf/fairy_garden_on_a_plate.pdf Again please use what you have at home or can gather on your daily walk.

Physical Challenge
We have seen from the photos you have been sharing how helpful lots of children have been. We thought they might enjoy this sweeping challenge which is great for gross motor skills and concentration. You can use whatever you have at home for this challenge leaves, toys, small brushes, big brushes...bonus points for sweeping real mess!

Literacy

C-Beebies Nursery Rhymes
Learning nursery rhymes boosts children's language communication and literacy skills while children learn new words.  This week see if you can learn 'Sing a rainbow!'.

If you are practising phonics with your child we would really recommend you use Read, Write, Inc. This is the phonics scheme the school uses and will ensure learning is consistant. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ The sound is released every day at 9.30am.

Have a great week of learning and playing!

Reception Home Learning Week 3

Hello Reception!

We hope that you have had a safe, restful and chocolate-filled Easter holiday and enjoyed taking part in the Family Quiz and Easter Egg Hunt Challenges! How did you get on in our first ever spelling test?

It has been fantastic to see what you have been sharing with us over the Easter holiday through Evidence Me. There was incredible board games and weather charts, planting of seeds, full marks in spelling tests, baking and pictures. Most importantly we have seen lots of smiling faces! We have loved replying to your observations and can’t wait to see more of what you are doing at home. If you are having trouble with Evidence Me, do not worry, just drop us an email: eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk.

Below are some activities for this week, we cannot wait to see how you get on!

Writing
  • Write a letter to your teacher, take a photo and email it to: eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk. Remember to use your sound mat and Fred fingers and don’t forget your finger spaces. We will reply to every letter we get!
  • Design and draw a rocket. What would you take with you to the moon? Can you write a list of your items?

Maths
  • We follow the White Rose Maths scheme at school and they have provided some lovely maths activities linked to story books. This week it is Supertato, one of our favourites! If you do not have the book at home, you could listen to it on YouTube. Take a look at the activities here and let us know how you get on. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/
  • Make your own number cards from 0-20, higher if you like! This could be from a cereal box, piece of paper, anything you can find. Make sure you form your numbers correctly. Can you recognise all the numbers? Can you place them in order? Ask an adult or sibling to close their eyes, hide one number. Can they guess which is missing? Switch over! You could also give each other clues to practice one more and one less (eg. can you point to the number that is one less than 14?)

Other Activities
  • Help your adult to write this week’s shopping list.
  • Go on your daily walk and hunt for natural objects like sticks, stones, pinecones or leaves to make different patterns and describe your pattern to your adult.
  • Make a sock puppet.
  • Make up a dance using your favourite song and get your family to join in.
  • Can you make an easy no-bake dessert?
  • Draw and label a picture of a plant. Can you include the roots, petals, stem and leaves?

Nursery Home Learning Week 3

We hope you had a relaxing Easter break and are all safe and well. Thank you for continuing to share what you have been doing at home it is really lovely to see the children enjoying activities.

Keep sending in the photos to Evidence Me, Facebook or email eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk. Over Easter we have seen children; baking  delicious cakes and muffins, practicing their drawing and painting, playing with water, riding bikes, creating moonsand, planting vegetable seeds, organising teddy bear picnics and even investigating ice... Wow! We think you are all amazing! As we have always said the most important thing is the children are safe and happy.

Here are some ideas you could complete at home this week:

Make a Banana Loaf - Knives do not have to be very sharp to cut through bananas so this is a great way to develop cutting skills. Try and encourage the children to hold with one hand and cut with the other ensuring the knife is the right way round!

You can follow this recipe if you have the ingredients:

  • Preheat the oven to 160 C.
  • Let the children cut and mash bananas!
  • Mix together bananas, 200g caster sugar, 1 egg, 60g melted butter in a bowl.  Add 200g flour (with one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda mixed in). Stir one teaspoon of salt in.
  • Add to a loaf tin and cook for roughly an hour.

Maths

Matching quantity to numeral is an important step in children's mathematical development. This is a fun way to check and support accurate counting. This could also be adapted to be played inside using items inside your house. Encourage the children to use their fingers to count the items and check the have the same amount as the number.

Markmaking Outside

Explore shadows outside and draw round these. If you have chalk you could turn this into pavement drawing. You could even let your child draw around your own shadow as a challenge!

Memory Game

Memory is such an important literacy skill that the children need to have to succeed in literacy later. This game encourages the children to remember and spot what is missing. It is easy to play and can be replicated very easily at home.

We are waiting for a code from one company we have been working with to create amazing stories recently, Tales Toolkit. We will keep you updated on some resources to create your own stories at home.

Here are some resources that might be useful:
Coronavirus: A Book for Children
Axel Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo has illustrated a digital book for primary school age children about the coronavirus and the measures taken to control it. If your child has lots of questions the pictures might help you explain.

CBeebies
Join a host of different celebrities for a different story read each night just before bedtime. https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/bedtime-stories

Ruth Miskin Speed Sounds Lesson Schedule
As previously mentioned if your child is interested in learning to read then the initial sounds (sounds of the alphabet) are being taught and filmed to share by Ruth Miskin. Below you can see the times for Set 1 sounds.
https://www.ruthmiskin.com/media/filer_public/1b/7d/1b7df13e-4381-4bb5-866b-ac0549394947/ss_after_easter1.pdf

The government released some advice recently on helping children 2 to 4 learn at home during this time. It is focused around helping your children to learn through the little things you do with them for example; every day conversations, make believe play, involving them in house hold chores (We saw a lovely photo of Sonny hovering and polishing this week!), playing games with letters and numbers and sharing a story together.

The advice is to keep a routine including bed times, meal times and making sure electronic devices are off an hour before bed time. Keeping active which could include a daily walk if you are able,PE with jo wicks, running in the garden, seeing who can do the most star jumps inside or playing hide and seek inside. Have a look at https://hungrylittleminds.campaign.gov.uk/ for some ideas for apps and games.

It has some good advice on socialising which is an important part of children's leaning at this age. At home you can talk to them and respond to them but you can also video call relatives and even Nursery school friends to keep in touch. They might not be ready to have a conversation but they can sit with you and show what they have made that week!

Many Thanks,
The Nursery Team
