Reception Learning W.C 5.10.26

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” said Mahatma Gandhi.

Our focus book was People Who Help Us:

Here is what we have been up to:

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. The children have been learning the sounds v, y, w, z and x. Please continue to read with your children and work on these sounds with them.

In Maths, we have been developing our subitising skills! Subitising is the ability to look at a small group of objects and recognise how many there are without needing to count each one. The children have been exploring the number 3 and learning to recognise what 3 looks like in different ways. We have been using our fingers, dots, objects and pictures to help us spot 3 quickly.

🌈 What We Are Learning Next Week

Next week, we will be exploring the wonderful story of Elmer the Elephant 🐘🌈 as part of our topic. We will be enjoying the story together and using it to support our learning and discussions.

🔤 Phonics: We will be revisiting some of the sounds that we have found tricky. Please continue to practise these sounds at home to help build confidence and secure our learning.

🔢 Maths: We will be learning the counting sequence to 5 and developing our understanding of numbers through practical activities.

Ways you can help at home:

  • Practise counting to 5 together.

  • Count everyday objects such as toys, stairs, socks or pieces of fruit.

  • Sing counting songs and rhymes.

  • Ask your child, “What comes next?” when counting.

  • Keep practising those tricky sounds little and often. 💕

Thank you for your continued support with your child's learning! 🌟

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Reception Learning W.C - 28.9.26

Reception: What We Are Learning

Reception have been working really hard this week. This term our topic is Marvellous Me. Our focus book was Sharing A Shell.

Here is what we have been up to: We have been learning all about friendship and what it means to be a good friend, we made friendship bracelets to give to a class mate, we sequenced the story and designed our own shell in drawing club.

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. The children have been learning the sounds e, l, h, r, and j.  Please continue to read with your children and work on these sounds with them everyday. Practise Set 1 Sounds here.

In Maths this week the children have been working hard to sort objects by colour, shape or size. They also found different ways to sort themselves such as into girls and boys, by height, or hair colour. In addition to this, they compared amounts using the language more or less.

Our Learning Next Week

Next week, we will be exploring the story 'People who help us'. We will speak about who helps us in the community, what to do in an emergency and drew fire fighter hats in drawing club.

In phonics, we will be learning the sounds v, y, w, z and x. At home, you could go on a little sound hunt and see what objects you can find beginning with these sounds!

In maths, we will be learning about subitising — this means recognising how many objects there are without having to count them one by one. For example, seeing 🍎🍎🍎 and knowing there are 3 straight away! Try using dice, fingers or small groups of objects and ask, “How many can you see?”

Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home! 💛

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Reception Learning - W.C 18.5.26

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

This term our topic is Plants and Growth. Our focus book this week was The little red hen.

Here is what we have been up to:

The children made their own delicious bread rolls. They explored how flour is made and investigated how ingredients change during mixing, rolling and baking. The children enjoyed observing the changes in the dough and were excited to taste their freshly baked bread rolls.

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week.

. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Literacy, the children used time connectives such as first, then, next and last to sequence and write about their bread-making experience. They recalled each stage of the process, from mixing the ingredients to baking the bread rolls. Using these key words helped them to put events in order and develop their early writing skills.

In Maths this week, the children enjoyed  building  new shapes using different 2D shapes. They also pulled shapes apart to see which smaller shapes they were made of. This helped them to recognise, name and talk about the properties of different 2D shapes.

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Year Reception: What We Are Learning 17.04.26

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

This term our topic is Plants and Growth. Our focus book this week was Jasper’s Beanstalk.

It has been an incredibly busy week of discovery in Reception! From the intricacy of planting a bean to the heavy lifting of water across the playground, the children have been diving deep into nature, mathematics, and engineering.

Here is a look at what we’ve been up to:

After learning where seeds and beans come from, each child planted their own runner bean this week.

We discussed what a plant needs to stay happy: Water (but not too much!), Light (Sun), Space to grow

We’ve placed our plannted beans on the windowsill so we can watch the "magic" happen underground as the roots begin to push out.

The children have been 'seed detectives', exploring a variety of fruits to see where they hide their seeds. they have practised using scientific words such as core, flesh and pip.

In our maths sessions, children have been exploring repeated patterns. Creating these patterns help the children to develop logic and reasoning skills that are the foundations for coding later on!

The children had great fun using the pulleys to transport water this week. Reaching up and pulling down builds the muscles in the shoulders and upper back. To pull a heavy load, children must plant their feet and engage their abdominal muscles to maintain balance, preventing them from being pulled toward the chain.

Reception Learning - W.C 16.3.26

Year Reception: What We Are Learning

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus book was Dinosaurs love underpants.

Here is what we have been up to: We have learnt about how Dinosaurs lived in the Prehistoric time. We found out information about different kinds of Dinosaurs including the Apatosaurus, Plesiosaur and Oviraptor and we found Dinosaurs inside eggs!

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. In Literacy, we wrote about a Dinosaur that entered our school. We wrote where the Dinosaur was last spotted and what it looked like. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have explored building 9 and 10. They represented these numbers in different ways. We also used a part whole model to show how we could make 10 using three different numbers.

Well done Reception for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!
