The afternoon nursery really enjoyed making chips today. First they washed their hands. Then they peeled the potatoes carefully. Next Mrs Greening cut the potatoes so they looked like chips. Finally we poured on a little oil and placed them in the oven. When they came out 30 minutes later they were chips. We enjoyed tasting the chips.

Thank you to all of you who have ensured your child has a pair of named wellies and a spare set of clothes. It is essential that your child has these in school and we look forward to receiving the rest of them.

We will be starting our book borrowing scheme this week. We have a box of books outside the class. They are there for you and your child to borrow and read at home. Reading with your child is incredibly important for many reasons, including the development of language skills. When sharing a book with your child you should ask your child simple questions and encourage them to ask questions back. Your child should also be encouraged to talk about the pictures, anticipate what might happen next, join in with repeated refrains and of course enjoy sharing the book with you.

Enclosed is a book review form. If you can complete one of these occasionally when you share a book with your child we would love to display them in our reading corner. As I am sure you aware, the early years is built on strong home school links.

If you have any questions please ask a member of staff.

Thank you for your continued support

You may not be aware that Free School Meals eligible children attract Pupil Premium funding, which is going to be £1300 per child. This additional money is used to improve achievement for that group but it also impacts on all of our children. For instance, a chunk of it pays for the free after school clubs that everyone benefits from. Our Governing Body have discussed how we can use this money to directly help eligible families. Support we can offer includes: free school trips, support with uniform and help with residential trips. If you think you may be eligible, please apply now. You don’t actually have to eat the school dinners… you just have to sign up! The more children who sign up, the more money we get, the more we can help our children. If you feel you are entitled to free schools meals, please pick up a form from the office. If you need help in completing the form, just ask!

Aspen Class meet the owls

The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit from Phil and his owls. We met many owls, but especially enjoyed meeting Ozzie, the friendly Boobook  owl. These owls are named Boobook after the sound they make, a bit like a cuckoo, which Ozzie demonstrated for us. Our favourite was Zeus, the European eagle owl. He was an impressive bird. Zeus is more than capable of living to 30 years or more in captivity. He delighted us with his powerful flight demonstration. The children were incredibly gentle when stroking the owls and couldn't believe how soft they felt.

Amazing artists

The children have really enjoyed learning about owls this week. Today the children were introduced to a new techniques of drawing with pastels and how these can be used to create an effect. Some children then went off to try this new technique. Look at their amazing owl drawings.

Nursery Wishing Tree

The Nursery Wishing tree is looking lovely. Thank you to all the parents who have helped to create it.

Fern Class meet the owls

Yesterday reception and nursery were extremely lucky to have the owl man into our school.

We met a Tawny Owl named Puff who had huge eyes, a Hawk Owl named Aussie who chases small birds for his dinner, a beautiful Barn Owl named Tito who was the oldest owl Phil had. When Tito flies, he flies in silence. The next owl we met was Scamp who comes all the way from Africa. He was a Southern Waxfaced Owl. His nickname was the 'Transformer Owl' because he moved so fast through the air. We met a little owl named Pod who was only 17 months old and finally an Eagle Owl named Isis. He was Phil's largest owl and thought of Phil as his mummy.

We were lucky enough to feel one of the Barn Owls. The children described the owl as 'soft, fluffy, smooth, cuddly and silky.'

Evie recognised that some owls are camouflaged and as a result of her answer Phil asked Evie if she wanted to put on the special glove and get the Hawk Owl Aussie to land on her arm. She was a natural!

What a lovely, interesting morning we all had!
