Wow! What a day we have had in Reception celebrating World Book Day 2023. Thank you to all parents and carers for the amazing costumes, the children have a had a brilliant day!

Today we have immersed ourselves in lots of stories and poetry. We have spent time creating a character to decorate our classroom doors. The children showed great reciprocity skills in working together to create a collaborative piece of art. Welcome to Reception!

Welcome to Reception!

What a first week we have had in reception! We have had a wonderful week meeting all of the children and watching them settle into their new classrooms. The reception team have been wowed by the children's fantastic reciprocity. They have demonstrated their ability to collaborate with each other, taking turns and sharing resources.

We have been learning the rules and routines of the classroom, practising our silent 'stop signal' and talking with our partner on the carpet. We have blown our teachers away with our tidying up!

The children have been working hard to earn class dojo points - keep an eye on our blog to see the dojo winner of the week.

Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support. We are looking forward to the year ahead!

Reception Learning - Summer 1 - Week 2

RECEPTION LEARNING - SUMMER 1 WEEK 2

Maths

In maths, the children have been exploring number bonds to twenty. The children have looked at different ways to make numbers over ten.  We practiced counting these numbers and seeing if we could notice patterns associated with numbers when they go higher than 10 We used ten frames to add numbers higher then 10. The children did an amazing job!

Key Vocabulary: Number bond, add, altogether, equal, more than, less than.

William- "10 plus 10 is 20"
Mateo- "Its 12"

Theo: “ 10 plus 8 is 18”

Wais: “ 10 add 10 is 20”

Anaelle "Look I made twelve"
Jace "Ten and three makes thirteen"

Literacy

This week, we continued reading Jasper's Beanstalk. This is a story about a cat called Jasper, who finds and plants a bean. He waters it, rakes and sows it, but it just doesn't seem to want to grow...   after sometime the bean begins to grow and grow and grow into a giant beanstalk.

We compared this book with Jack and the Bean stalk. Jack and the Beanstalk is about Jack, a poor country boy who trades the family cow for a handful of magic beans, which grow into an enormous beanstalk reaching up into the clouds. Jack climbs the beanstalk and finds himself in the castle of an unfriendly giant.

Our literacy task this week involved labelling the parts of a plant so we could understand what we may see as our beans grow.

Key Vocabulary: stem, root, flower, leaves, beanstalk, mud

Harry- "This is the leaf"
Eliza- "Its the roots"

Planting Our Seeds!

This week we planted our seeds. We had such fun getting our hands dirty!! We added our magic bean and then filled the pot half full with soil. We have been caring for our plants by giving them sunlight and watering them. Gardening is great for children as it allows them to feel responsible for caring for their plant, they understand about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants, they gain self- confidence for watching their own plant grow and the develop a love of nature and how the outdoor environment is a safe and pleasant place. We can't wait to watch our beans grow!

Tommy- "I put the mud in"
Fatima-"The bean will grow to my castle"

Iustin: "It's hard putting the mud in"

Edie: "Do I put mud in to the top?"

Anaelle:  "I pushed my seed in.. look"

Alice: "If we put water on it everyday Poppy, then it will grown really BIG!"

Our Wormery!

This week the children were very interested in finding Worms in the garden. This was the perfect opportunity to create our very own Reception Wormery. A wormery is a place where worms can grow, compost and make more worms.  A wormery will recycle food waste into superb fertilizer for your garden or yard. We love observing the worms everyday!

Anaelle- "I am putting the Worm in"
Jaabir- "I found the worm"
Layla- Mae- "I have a big worm"
