Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

Our focus book this week was Dear Zoo.

Here is what we have been up to:

In Literacy we recapped our red words the,a,I,of,he,go,to,my,was,you,we,they,she,have,all,her,see,way

and remembered that sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

We wrote a letter to the zoo asking if we could have an animal.

We used words such as a tall giraffe, a funny monkey and a long snake. 

In Maths this week the children have been adding two different numbers together to see the bigger number.

We looked at animals and thought if a penguin has 2 legs and a lion has 4 then there are 6 legs altogether.  

World cup dress up day

This week we all dressed up in our favourite football kits or the colour of the flag our class had in the school

sweepstake. Alder class had the Netherlands, Aspen class had Turkey and Apple class has Brazil.

We watched highlights of games, made football bookmarks, designed our own football kit and coloured

the World cup mascots. 

Zoo trip

This week we also went to Call of the wild zoo. We had a great time looking at all the animals,

listening to information about life cycles and watching the bird show.

 Reception's Trip to Call Of The Wild Zoo

What a brilliant day we had visiting Call Of The Wild Zoo on Friday! We were so impressed with how sensible each and every child was during the trip and it was lovely for the children to be able to develop their knowledge around animals and lifecycles.

The day started by getting onto the coach and singing some of our favourite songs to pass the time on the journey. Once we arrived, it was time to look around the zoo! We saw some smaller animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and meerkats as well as pigs, monkeys and even an ostrich!

We were then lucky enough to receive an educational talk from some of the knowledgeable staff at the zoo. We were able to pass around boxes containing a cockroach and a stick insect, giving us the chance to have a closer look at some creepy crawlies. We also had the opportunity to stroke snakes!

Next up, it was lunchtime and we all enjoyed devouring our packed lunches after a busy morning! With no time to waste, it was back into the zoo to see the remaining animals before we headed off back to school. The weather was not on our side but we are never discouraged by a little rain and even managed to have a quick play in the park before we got back on the coaches. 

Tired and soggy but full of joy from our exciting day, it was time for more songs (and a rest) on the journey back.

Reception Trip

Date: Friday 27th May 2022.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Reception children on Monday 11th July 2022. We will be visiting the Sealife Centre in Southend.

On Monday 11th July 2022, all children are expected at school on time, so that we can leave promptly at 9:30am. We will be travelling by coach and expect to arrive back at school by 3pm - we will ensure to keep parents updated on our whereabouts via the school's Facebook page. 

Children are required to wear school uniform; please ensure that all children wear appropriate footwear and have a waterproof coat. The weather is likely to be warm, so please ensure your child has a sun hat and has had sun cream applied.  We will be eating lunch at the Sealife Centre, so all children will need to take a packed lunch with them. Should your child require a lunch provided by the school, please indicate their preferences on the form below. All lunch orders must be completed by Friday 24th June 2022, so that we can process your order in time for your child’s trip. Alternatively, children can bring their own packed lunch in a carrier bag that is clearly labelled with their name and class.

The Reception trip will incur a voluntary charge of £12 per child that should be paid via sQuid. This charge covers the coach transport and their entry to the Southend Sealife Centre. To make payment log on to your sQuid account and follow the steps provided.

Please either complete the form attached to this letter and return to the class teacher, or scan this QR code and complete it online (it should take no more than a couple of minutes).

Aspen Park Trip

Today Aspen class went on their trip to Central Park. We were a little bit worried that the rain was going to pour down on us but luckily the clouds held it together until we got safely back to school

We were so fantastic at walking sensibly and listening to our grown-ups. We had checklists to observe our local surroundings, ticking off bus stops, zebra crossings and looking at some bird boxes.

When we got to the park we had a super time exploring all of the different apparatus and playing with our friends. 

We even had a delicious snack at the end, to refuel us for our uphill journey back to school. We will probably sleep very well tonight!

A big thank you to the parents who volunteered to join us today. Thank you for helping make our afternoon so successful!

Reception visit Jump Evolution!

The Reception children have been looking forward to their school trip to Jump Evolution for quite some time. The day finally arrived and there was much excitement as the children arrived at school. Jumping socks and high vis jackets on, we set off for Jump Evolution. The children walked sensibly and spotted some things in the environment on their way.

Eden “That’s my house!”

After we watched the safety video, it was time to bounce, jump, flip, swing and balance. The children all showed great skill and lots of braveness as they tackled the challenges with ease. There were lots of smiling faces and by the end everyone was exhausted. The hill back up to school proved quite the challenge after bouncing and before lunch!

Apple Class Visit Lidl!

Today was a very exciting day for the children in Apple Class, it was their first school trip of the year! The children arrived at school ready for a very busy day ahead. The high vis jackets were on and the children ready to go. The children walked to Lidl following instructions and spotting things on the way. "Look it's the 496!" said George. Once we arrived in Lidl we had a fun filled trip up in the lifts and then set off to do our shopping. 

Each group was responsible for buying certain ingredients for our biscuits, including the decorations. The children set off thinking about were certain items might be kept in the store. Once they selected their shopping we headed to the tills to pay. The children packed their bags, collected their receipts and it was time to head back to school to get baking. After one more trip in the lift! 

The children worked in their groups to follow the same biscuit recipe as we used last week for Children in Need. This meant they were familiar with it and beginning to become more independent. The counted the spoons, mixed, rubbed and rolled. Today we cut out elephant biscuits as our story of the week is Elmer. 

Phew, it was nearly time for lunch! The biscuits were baked and after lunch we got set decorating them. We chose our own colours and decorations like the elephants who dress up for the elephant parade in Elmer. A busy day, full of lots of experiences and fun. The children listened and behaved well despite the high levels of excitement. We hope the children enjoyed the biscuits and maybe shared them with you!
