Sink or Swim?
This week Reception have been reading Lost and Found. The story written by Oliver Jeffers is about a boy and a penguin. The boy does some research and discovers penguins are from the South Pole and sets of in his row boat to return the lost penguin. It turns out the penguin is not lost or sad, he is just lonely!
The children’s task in Apple Class was to build a boat for the penguin to ride in. The children used the language float and sink as they discussed what they wanted their boats to do. They thought about the materials they wanted to use and looked at a variety of pictures of boats for inspiration. The children had to collaborate and discuss their ideas and how they were going to achieve these. This proved a little tricky to start with but after a few prompts everyone got into the swing of sharing their ideas and listening to each other. The children were very resourceful and they came up with a wide range of designs using a variety of materials.
The best bit.... testing them! The water tray was relocated to the carpet and the cheering and blowing began. The majority of the boats successfully floated and everyone had great fun testing them. Exhausted from all the cheering it was time for story and home. I think we might be making some more boats tomorrow! Unfortunately our water tray may have leaked a little and now we have a rather wet carpet in Apple class, oops!
