The Very Busy Spider

Nursery children have enjoyed reading the story of 'The Very Busy Spider' this week. They have explored the green Jelly Baff and used tweezers to free the trapped spiders, carefully spun their own webs around paper plates, added legs to the numbered spider and retold the story using stick puppets. It has certainly been a very popular book choice and the children have found out lots of interesting spider facts too!

3...2...1...Play Dough Workstation

Last week, we opened the make your own play dough station for the children in Aspen class. All the children in Reception now have the opportunity to make their own play dough following the simple 3,2,1 written and picture instructions. 

The tactile properties of play dough make it super fun and enjoyable for all the children to explore as they find these resources easy to manipulate in different ways and a sense of achievement that they have made their own play dough. We endeavor to provide the right resources which challenge the children and develop their fine motor and language skills.  This is a skill we develop throughout the year so that by the summer term the children are independently completing this task therefore demonstrating progression.

Working as a team to make the play dough and following the instructions together. "We're making play dough." said Sophia.

"We need 2 squirts of paint." Tiren told Livi as they made their pink play dough together. 

Livi loved kneeling the mixture to make the play dough. "It's so soft."

Dear Parents,

The children enjoyed reading the story of Jasper’s Beanstalk last week and we have been tracking the progress of our own beans.  We have also began to plant the vegetable garden, starting with turnips.

This week we will be reading  The Hungry Caterpillar  and completing linked activities, including caring for caterpillars and exploring the life cycle of a butterfly.  We also have a caterpillar workshop to look forward to next week.  

Our Learning Objectives for this term are:-

Personal, Social and Emotional:

Confident to speak to others about own needs, wants, interests and opinions.

To work as part of a group.

Explains own knowledge and understanding, and asks appropriate questions of others.

                       

Communication and Language:

Able to follow a story without pictures.

ELG: To answer how and why questions.

Listens and responds to ideas expressed by others in conversation or discussion.

Physical Development:

ELG: To move confidently in a range of ways.

Practices some appropriate safety measures without direct supervision.

Uses simple tools to effect changes to materials.

Literacy:

Uses vocabulary and forms of speech that are increasingly influenced by their experiences of books.

ELG: To read some common irregular words (red words).

Uses phonetic knowledge to write simple cvc words.

Mathematics:

ELG: They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

To add single digit numbers.

To solve problems including doubling.

Expressive Art and Design:

Create simple representations of events, people and objects.

ELG: To use media and materials in original ways.

Experiment with changing songs.

Understanding the World:

They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.

Children know about similarities and  differences in relation to living things.  

Comments and asks questions about aspects of their familiar world such as the place where they live or the natural world.

Messages.

Well done again to all of the pupils who have been walking down the slope independently, as we have previously mentioned, this is in preparation for next year, when you will be leaving them at the main door.  Please be advised any messages you have for us in the mornings can be given to the staff on the main door who will pass them on.

Also thank you to all of you who have sent in your children's baby photos.  We look forward to receiving the rest of them, we can photocopy originals or you can email them to us directly.

Learning Challenge

Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.

The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, famous person, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.

Reception Star Readers!

Congratulations to our star readers this week! Kezia has now read 50 books to receive her silver star reader award and £5 book voucher. Ellie has read 75 books and has chosen 'The Book with no Pictures" to take home. Saarah has read 100 books gaining her gold star reader award. Well done!

Welcome to the Vets!

At the end of last term the children in Reception voted for their next role play area. We discussed the rules of voting and how you can only vote once. The children tallied the votes and it was a close one. The Veterinary Surgery beat the Doctors by one vote!

Having chosen their favoured role play area the children were excited to see it after the holidays and couldn't wait to start playing. The children have been taking turns to take on the role of the receptionist, booking in the next appointments and recording important messages. "Hello, we don't have another appointment this morning, could you come back this afternoon please?" said Nicole.

They have also been busy looking after the animals, grooming them and helping them feel better. "This horse has hurt his leg, I think he needs a bandage" Jessica explained to Laura as they worked together at the examination table.

Role play provides children with the opportunity to develop their communication and language skills as well as to use their imagination and to play cooperatively with their peers.

We had great fun reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk last week and planting our own beans.  We will be caring for the seedlings and tracking their growth throughout this half term.

This week we will be reading Jasper’s Beanstalk and completing linked activities.

A big ‘Well done’ to all of the children who walked down the slope independently last week, keep up the good work.    Furthermore, now that all of the children can confidently write their own names we will be encouraging the children to write their names on the lunchtime registration board, therefore selecting their own lunch choice .  This will increase their independences skills and encourage them to look after their own belongings.

Nursery Newsletter 24.4.17

Dear Parents,

      We had a great first week back and the children enjoyed celebrating St George's Day. They were even treated to a special performance of the story of George and the Dragon. We were also very fortunate as we had a special visit from baby Teddy and Mrs Mooney to support the children to understand how to use our role play baby clinic. This week we are talking about the story 'Titch', which shares ideas of both children growing up and plants growing. The children will be able to plant their own cress seeds and learn how to make sure they grow.
        

Personal, Social and Emotional:

We are encouraging the children to talk to other children when playing and create their own games. We are encouraging the children to identify the feelings of characters in stories and talk about their own feelings.
                       

Communication and Language/Literacy:

We are encouraging the children to learn Nursery Rhymes and join in with actions to help them re-tell these. We are focusing on learning the rhymes ''I hear thunder" and "Rock-a-bye-baby" this week. They are encouraged to listen carefully to adults telling the rhymes and say the missing words.
As well as continuing to point out rhymes and play games with rhyming words the children are being encouraged to hear the initial sounds in words. We have been playing lots of games to encourage them to identify words that start with the same sound e.g. 'ball' 'banana' 'beach' and they have been encouraged to listen out for the initial sound in their names.

The children are always encouraged to use the correct tenses and word endings when talking e.g. "I slid down the slide." "I found a pretty bead." "Soon it will be my Birthday." Please continue to model this at home. Encourage the children to talk to you in full sentences and share their ideas.

Physical Development:
The children are continuing to develop their throwing and catching skills.

We are focusing on ensuring children are able to hold scissors correctly and are enjoying daily

'Dough Disco' sessions to develop the muscles in the children's fingers.

    

Mathematics:

The children will learn about the formation and recognition of numbers through the Ten Town number stories. This week we will focus on two and three.

Expressive Art and Design
Printing with different objects e.g. sponges, forks.

Snack
This week we have added cereal to the snack area. The children will be able to spoon the correct amount, add milk and wash their equipment once they have finished.

Note: To ensure all children are safe and happy whilst waiting to enter please make sure they are safely standing with parents/carers and continue to follow the school rules at all times; kind words, hands and feet.

Nursery Rhyme	Painting
1.      Learn it off by heart. 2.      Draw a picture to illustrate the rhyme. 3. Why not grow your own plant from a seed and send in photographs of how it grows.	Create your own flower picture. You can be as creative as you like try using paint, crayon, printing or even forks!

We will also be learning about mini-beasts such as spiders and bumblebees over the half term. If your child is interested in this you could help them to create a poster/picture and share the facts they have found out.
