Reception Newsletter 13.11.17

Dear Parents,

      The children had a busy week last week as well as all of their usual activities they enjoyed finding out about Remembrance Day and the significance of the poppy, they also had great fun toasting marshmallows on the bonfire (special halal marshmallows were provided for those with dietary requirements).

     This week the children will be exploring the celebration of ‘Diwali’ we will be carrying out various related tasks including cooking and pattern activities.

     Please ensure your child has spare clothes in school, a number of children had toileting accidents last week and a great deal of time was wasted by teaching staff who were trying to find them something suitable to wear, because they did not have their own spare set of clothes hanging on their peg. Also please ensure the spare clothes are named  to prevent confusion.

     The learning objectives:

     This newsletter will  be posted on our EYFS blog and facebook page at the beginning of each week.   It will also be available in the outdoor area, in a blue tray labelled ‘Weekly Newsletter’

       Learning Challenge

      Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.

      The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, famous person,  illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.  The table below demonstrates some guidance.

Reception Shape Explorers

The children have been exploring 'Shape' this week, the skills that are learnt when exploring and sorting shape are important life skills and support identifying and organising all visual information.    The children have had great fun carrying out shape hunts, which has entailed them hunting for shapes in their learning environment.

They have also been learning shape songs to help them remember the attributes of shapes and they have finally had the opportunity to create collages using various shapes. Korey demonstrated great resourcefulness when he said "I can't find an oval, it's ok I'll make one"  and Oliver said "I have five squares on my house".

  

The children have been singing 'Meet the shapes', please encourage your child to sing this at home.

We went on a shape hunt and found lots of different shapes in our playground. This ability to accurately identify shapes is a fundamental mathematical skill, and is so rewarding for our children because their world is full of shapes. Understanding shapes will enable them to be more in tune with the world around them and see the connections between objects.

Reception's New Loose Parts!

Today the Reception children received some excellent additions for their loose parts area. We have picked up a collection of go-kart tyres which are perfect for extending our building and adding to our models. The children spent a long time this afternoon rolling the tyres and then building ramps from the bricks for them to roll down. The children demonstrated great reciprocity as they worked collaboratively with their peers.

Ian Sutton has kindly made the children some very special number plates for their creations. They have already been put to good use today. Adam and Tele worked together to build a train, adding lots of wheels whilst Ellie-Jane decided to build a car. Thank you very much, we love them!

Nursery Newsletter 13.11.17

The children enjoyed discussing the fireworks and using chalk and coloured paint outside to create their own last week. They also created their own poppies and added them to the field of poppies outside the school grounds. This week our focus story is 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear' by Eric Carle. The children will have lots of opportunities to explore colour

Remember Thursday is the Stay and Play session which starts at 9.15am for Morning Nursery and 1.15pm for Afternoon Nursery. There will be a short talk about the importance of Communication and Language and then you will be able to stay and play with the children in the setting. Sessions will last for roughly and hour, if you wish to you may take the children home with you when the session finishes.

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:

Mathematics
Supporting the children to recognise numbers in the environment.
On the maths table we have coloured teddies for the children to count and sort.

Physical
We are teaching the children to hold scissors correctly and snip paper.
In PE sessions they are learning running and chasing games to enable them to change speed and direction.

Snack
This week the children are following a recipe to bake cakes. The recipe uses balance scales to support the children to learn to measure for example the children have to balance the amount of flour against two eggs.

Communication and Language
Encouraging children to use simple sentences correctly.
Encouraging children to hold a conversation and respond to comments.
We will be sharing the story ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear' and encouraging the children to re-tell this.


Understanding of the World Remembers and talks about significant events in their own experience.

Personal and Social Development
Ensuring children are able to co-operate with routines and some boundaries.
Modelling the correct behaviours in play, ensuring children use resources well and begin to share with other children.

Thank you to Lily and Larissa for sending photos of their firework themed cooking and Eddie for sending photos of his Butlins holiday. Please continue to email any photos of the children's achievements, activities they have completed at home or fun days out to eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk.

On Thursday 16th November parents are invited for a Stay and Play session focused on Communication and Language and Storytelling. There will be a short presentation for parents and then you will be invited to join your children in the environment. Morning parents will be invited at 9.15 AM and Afternoon parents will be invited at 1.15 PM.

On Friday 8th of December the children and parents are invited back to school for a ‘Christmas Story session’. The children will help cook mince pies for the evening, hot chocolate will be served and the children will come back to school at 5pm to listen to some special christmas stories and sing some christmas songs.

The EYFS Nativity (Nursery and Reception) will be at 9.15 on December 12th for Morning Nursery Parents and 2.15PM on December 12th for Afternoon Nursery Parents.

Nursery Campfire

Nursery were very excited to have their first campfire in the outdoor fire pit. The children sat on seats around the purpose build fit pit as the fire was lit and then they were able to toast their own marshmallows.  They were all very sensible and were able to explain how we keep ourselves safe around fire. The children were encouraged to feel their marshmallows before and after toasting and noticed how they were very sticky and had changed colour after placing them on the fire. After toasting our gooey treats we sang a variety of camp songs before the children were encouraged to sit still and listen to the crackling fire. 

The children took great pleasure watching Mrs King disappear in a puff of smoke as we made sure the fire was safely put out at the end. 

A great experience was had by all and we are looking forward to more campfire cooking soon!

Reminder Nursery Stay and Play Tomorrow

Parents/Carers of Nursery children are invited to a Stay and Play session this Thursday. The morning session will start at 9.15am and the afternoon session at 1.15pm. 

There will be a short talk about how you can support your child to reach Communication and Language goals and the importance of Story Time, then you will be able to join your child in the setting. Each child will be able to take home a free story book gifted by the charity Book Start. 

Fizz! Pop! Boom!

After discussing why we celebrate Bonfire night the Reception children all had the opportunity to create their own firework this week. The children worked in pairs to add the ingredients together before making a prediction about what would happen. The children finally added the vinegar and stepped back to see the outcome. There was some very excited faces and a little bit of mess! 

We have also been busy this week creating our own firework pictures and writing onomatopoeias for fireworks. This has given the children a chance to apply their phonic knowledge and to begin to segment simple words.
