We have had a fantastic week of learning and there has been so much to celebrate and be proud of in Reception! 

These children worked extremely hard and have been rewarded for all of their determination and efforts.

After listening to the story Kiss Goodnight, Sam, we spent some time exploring the stormy weather that appears in the story. The children were fascinated by the sounds and movements of the rain and wind, so we extended this curiosity by creating our very own rain makers. They carefully filled and decorated their tubes, experimenting with different materials to discover which ones made the best “rainy” sounds. It was a lovely hands-on activity that encouraged creativity, listening skills, and lots of excited conversation about the weather!

The children had a wonderful time exploring a variety of textures in our tuff tray this week. They made marks and patterns in the snowy glitter, watching how it sparkled as they moved their fingers through it. There was lots of excitement as they gathered up the giant cotton-ball “snowballs,” feeling how soft and fluffy they were. This sensory play encouraged early mark-making skills, imaginative play, and plenty of giggles as the children explored the snowy scene together!

The children built this obstacle course completely by themselves, using their own ideas and imagination. It was wonderful to see them confidently choosing their own resources and deciding how to set everything up. They worked together beautifully, helping one another, sharing suggestions, and proudly testing out their creation. Their growing independence and teamwork skills are really shining through, and it was such a joy to watch!

We have been encouraging the children to develop their independence when putting on their coats. They have been practising the “flip trick,” finding their sleeves, and having a go before asking for help. It’s lovely to see their confidence growing as they try new skills and proudly manage more of the routine on their own each day. You can support this at home too by giving your child time to practise putting on their coat independently, they love showing off what they can do!

Congratulations to Aston, who has been awarded the E for Excellence certificate for his wonderful play. Aston is such a kind friend who consistently treats others with gentleness and respect. We love watching how he includes everyone in his games and always strives to make sure his friends feel happy and valued. Well done, Aston, we are very proud of you!

Congratulations to Radiya, who has been awarded the E for Excellence certificate for her wonderful imaginative play. Radiya has been making new friends and confidently joining in with their games, which has been lovely to see. We are so proud of how much her confidence is growing each day. Well done, Radiya!

Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus book was Winter: A Solstice Story.

Here is what we have been up to: we have learnt all about the season of Winter. 

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc.  The children worked hard to write Christmas cards this week. Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc).

In Maths this week the children have been learning about different 4 sided shapes. They learnt about squares and rectangles and were able to explain the differences between the two.

Reception What We Are Learning W/B 24.11.25

Year Reception: What We Are Learning 

Reception have been working really hard this week. Our focus book was Kipper’s Birthday.

Here is what we have been up to:

The children have also been working hard in Read, Write, Inc this week. The children have all been assessed and are now working in groups based on this.  Please continue to read 5 times a week with your children and work on set 1 sounds as well as word time words (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc). The children discussed what happens at a birthday party. They worked hard to write CVC words such as box, rip, hat, tag, win, hug and nap. They used their sound mats to write down the initial sounds they could hear in the words and they tried to sound the CVC words out using the sound mats. 

In Maths this week the children have been learning one more and one less with numbers up to five. They also worked hard to explore the composition of the numbers 1-5. They were able to talk about the whole and the parts they could see for example: three frogs were on the log, another two were in the pond, there were five frogs altogether. Three is a part, two is a part and there are five altogether.

Congratulations to the following children, who have been awarded the E for Excellence certificate this week! We are so proud of all your hard work, effort, and achievements.

Congratulations to Dotty, who has been awarded the E for Excellence certificate for her excellent play this week. Dotty was leading games with her friends using the babies. She showed care and compassion, and it was a joy to see her use her imagination in this way.

Congratulations to Khaleesi, who has been awarded the E for Excellence certificate for being a fantastic friend. Khaleesi always treats others with care and kindness. We love how gently she speaks to others and how she makes sure everyone feels happy and included.

So people have requested a christmas card list. You can pick up a list from the entrence of the nursery. They will be in a green tray on top of the book shelf. Please help yourself 

Please ensure your reading book is back on Thursday, so we can change it and hand it out the following day. 

This week's learning  

In the playdough area, we explored blue playdough mixed with sparkles to inspire wintery creations. The children enjoyed shaping snowmen, stars, and many imaginative designs. It’s been a busy, hands-on space full of creativity and conversation.

Using chalks on dark paper, we created contrasting dark and light scenes. The children experimented with mark-making, shading, and blending. This activity encouraged observation, creativity, and lots of discussion about light and shadows.

We searched through bowls of dark pasta to find bright, colourful stars hidden inside. Children used their fine-motor skills to sift, pick, and sort the stars. This sensory challenge kept everyone focused and engaged.

Outside, we watched frost and patches of ice slowly melt throughout the day. The children used pieces of ice to mix, mash, and create “potions” in our outdoor area. It sparked so much curiosity about winter weather and temperature changes.

We’ve also been enjoying our obstacle courses outdoors, using our physical skills in lots of different ways. Children balanced, climbed, jumped, and navigated their way through each setup. It’s been a fun way to build strength, confidence, and teamwork.

We played matching pairs to help develop memory and concentration skills. The children enjoyed taking turns, noticing patterns, and trying to remember where different pictures were hiding. It was a fun and thoughtful activity that encouraged persistence and problem-solving.

During group time, we used torches to explore how shadows are made. The children experimented with moving objects closer and further away to change the shapes and sizes. It was a playful way to deepen their understanding of light.
