Who’s been in my classroom?

The Reception children returned to their classroom after lunch to find there had been a visitor and the visitor had left lots of mess and some clues. The children put on their detective caps and searched the room for clues. They found a wide range of clues including purple prickles, a large footprint, terrible claws, acorns, knobbly knees, sticks and knocked over furniture. Can you guess who it was? 

The children quickly put their heads together and decided it was the Gruffalo! It turns out this is one of the children’s favourite books and they were already very familiar with it. The children all joined in with the repeated refrains in the story. “There’s no such thing as a Gruffalo!”

This has set us up for an exciting week of tracking the Gruffalo, retelling the story, making wanted posters and designing our own monsters.

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to all of the children and their families for the final half term. Our final topic is ‘The World’ we will be reading an array of stories and this week we will be reading ‘The Gruffalo’ and carrying out linked activities.

Our Learning Objectives for this week are:-

Personal, Social and Emotional:

ELG: They work as part of a group or class, and understand and follow the rules.

ELG: Children are confident to try new activities, and say why they like some activities more than others.

Confident to speak to others about own needs, wants, interests and opinions.

                       

Communication and Language:

ELG: They use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are to happen in the future.

ELG: They listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant comments, questions or actions.

Children follow instructions involving several ideas or actions.

Physical Development:

ELG: Children know the importance for good health of physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe.

ELG: To move confidently in a range of ways.

Practices some appropriate safety measures without direct supervision.

Literacy:

ELG: They also write some irregular common words.

ELG: To write simple sentences which can be read by them and others.

Knows that information can be retrieved from books and computers.

Mathematics:
ELG: They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
ELG: Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer.
ELG: They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Expressive Art and Design:

ELG: They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

Introduces a storyline or narrative into their play.

ELG: The children sing songs, make music, dance and experiment with ways of making them.

Understanding the World:

ELG: They know that other children don't always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this.

ELG: Children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members.

They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.

Important Notices:

Walking down the ramp:

It is that time of year when  we start to encourage the children to develop their independence skills even further and walk down the ramp with their peers.  If you feel you child is ready, please encourage them to do so. Parents and carers can stand at the top of the ramp and watch them walk safely in their classrooms. This usually helps with the transition in Year 1.

Learning Challenge

Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.

The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, famous person, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class. Please find some ideas in the table below.  Please ensure the completed challenge is handed in to your child’s teacher by Monday 16th July, so that the certificates can be prepared.

Learn it off by heart. Draw a picture to illustrate the rhyme. Find out about the rhyme

Reception Newsletter 21.05.18

Term: Summer 1                     Date: 21.05.18

Dear Parents,

We had a busy week last week. The butterflies were released, the children had enjoyed following their progress and development.  The children all had an opportunity to have a picnic at the park and visit the farm, they also took part in Royal Wedding celebrations, make sure you look out for the photos.

This week the children will be reading the text ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and carry our related tasks.

Guess Who in Reception!

The children have loved looking at their own and each others baby photos this week! It sparked some great discussions over how we have changed and grown. The children looked for similarities and differences between themselves and others. We loved trying to guess who all the babies were. The children were reminded to speak in full sentences and to explain their reasons. There was great shock in discovering that the teachers had once been babies too! Thank you for sending in your baby photos.

4 feet of Mayhem

Today Aspen class have been thinking about size and measurement. We have been reading ‘Titch’, and thinking about and ordering things by size. We decided to measure ourselves, and find out who was the tallest and who was the shortest in the class. 

We had a lot of fun measuring each other against the wall and writing our names next to our head height so that we could later compare. We demonstrated reciprocity, collaborating to work together to mark each other’s heights on the wall. 

Praharsh: “I am shorter than Alessandra.”

Maggie: “I’m going to be the same size as Kyla.”

Rubie-Rae: “Maya-Rose is taller than me!”

Aspen Wanderers

Today Aspen class went on their first school trip to Central Park and the farm at Mead Primary School! We were all very excited to take our picnics and have a wonderful day out together.

We walked down to the park, with the help of our parent volunteers and the children listened very carefully to all the instructions for crossing the road safely and sensibly. At the park we had a lovely picnic before heading over to Mead to visit the farm!

We were so excited to see all of the animals! There were goats, ponies, chickens, geese, rabbits and even some eggs! We observed the animals and got to have a pat and a stroke.

Thomas: "The chickens have legs just like us! Their feet even look like shoes!"
Charlie: "It is such a lucky day!"

A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers today who helped make the day run so smoothly!
