History in the Baking in Reception!

Wow another fun filled week in Reception.  This week we have been reading the text The Little Red Hen. The children have been joining in with the repeated refrains of the text and retelling the story using actions.  They have created story maps and written labels using their blending skills for the main characters and events.

Of course in the story of the Little Red Hen, she grows some corn to bake her own bread, we thought this was a great opportunity to bake some bread with the children. The children demonstrated reciprocity as they worked in groups to create the mixture, they took turns and debated which ingredients to use to add extra flavour to the bread.  Not only did this activity address communication and social skills it also gave the children an opportunity to strengthen their hand muscles as they mixed and kneaded the ingredients.

"It's sticky Mrs Gradley, so so Sticky." exclaimed Leonard.
" I make bread at home too!" Faye shared excitedly with her team.

“My hands are getting tired kneading” Harry
“We could use cheese and poppy seeds, then everyone gets to choose.” Adam

The best is yet to crumb!
