Term: Summer 2                        Date: 01.07.19

Dear Parents and Carers,

The children had a fantastic time on their pirate training day at Thorndon Country Park. The children built pirate ships, walked the plank, practised their balance in hammocks and made their own pirate flags.

This week is Sports Day for Reception. This will begin at 9.15am on Wednesday 3rd July, we welcome parents and carers to come and cheer the children on. The children should wear shorts, t-shirts and trainers for the whole school day.

This week we will be reading ‘Journey’ a book with no words. The children will be using their imagination and storytelling to bring the fabulous pictures to life.

Communication and Language
We are encouraging children to use talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events.

Physical Development
As we continue to develop the children’s fine motor strength we are now also focussing on their letter and number formation as well. Particularly encouraging and correcting backwards formed letters and numbers. The children are busy practising for Sports Day in their PE lessons.

Maths
We will be working on addition and subtraction problems this week as well as working on creating our own questions for our friends to solve.

Reception School Trip!

Please ensure your child comes to school wearing suncream tomorrow. They should be wearing their school uniform, but they are welcome to where trainers as these would be more appropriate for the day. Please no open-toes sandals or flip flops. If you are providing a pack lunch from home, please ensure this is in a lunch box as we need to bring home all rubbish with us. The location of the trip has been changed to Thorndon Country Park, the itinerary of the day will remain the same.

Pirates AHOY

On Friday, Reception and Nursery had a wonderful Pirate Day! We all put on our sailor outfits and took to the seas, uncovering treasure, decoding treasure hunts, rescuing hostages and walking the plank.

We were all so excited to come to school dressed as pirates and we all looked incredible!

During maths we went on a treasure hunt, counting all the coins we collected and practising our coin recognition. During the day we had treasure hunts to uncover, mysteries to solve and maps to make, helping us find our hostage teddy bears.

We had an absolutely wonderful day, thank you to all the grown-ups who helped us dress up and get into the pirate spirit for the day!

Shiver me timbers!

Yo ho ho, it's a pirate's life for us!

Ahoy me hearties, see you next time!
Ciao for now!

WOW Woodwork!

The Reception children have been busy this week in the wood work area and have enjoyed the additional station which has provided them with colouring pens, felt tips and crayons for the children to decorate their models. It has been a hit!

Woodwork provides amazing opportunities for our children’s learning and development. The children have been absorbed for extended periods of time creating their models. This encourages creative thinking, math skills, scientific investigation, problem-solving skills as well as developing physical development and coordination.
The children initially completed adult-led workshops to learn how to safely use the tools and materials.Through the use of working with real tools, the children are given responsibility and are able to accomplish tasks which can initially be challenging and  gain new skills. The children are now creating their own models which they are extremely proud of.

“You’re not allowed to take them off, the safety glasses will protect your eyes.” Asher.

“I’m sanding it to get all the sharp edges off.” Peter.

Messages
As it it the final half term in Reception we will be looking at a few things to make the transition into year one as smooth as possible. Some children have already started to walk down the ramp to their classrooms on their own (or with friends). We will be encouraging all of the children to walk down the ramp independently in the mornings. There is no rush to do this immediately, but only when you and your child feel they are ready. Staff will welcome the children as usual and support with choosing lunch or putting their things away if needed. We would hope most of the children will be able to achieve this by the end of the summer term.

Fantastic Fish!

Nursery enjoyed painting on a large scale today and creating giant fish. They had to work collaboratively and negotiate with each other to create the giant fish. They enjoyed exploring different ways of creating patterns including rolling, dabbing, swirling and flicking. We have had been learning some of the poems from 'Commotion in the Ocean' and the children have been practicing their actions in small groups.

" The tail is all finished now." Chidera
