Year One and Two- Reading and Spellings

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week the children will receive their reading books and their spelling books.

We have been waiting for a delivery of plastic wallets so we can send home the reading books and reading records together. Unfortunately, they are still not here, so we are making do with ‘plastic punched pockets’ and will replace these as soon as the wallets are with us.

The children will receive their books on their reading day this week. This will mean that 6 children will receive their book on Monday, 6 on Tuesday, 6 on Wednesday…etc. They will then keep their books at home for the week and bring in their books to be changed on their reading day. Please read with your child for 15 minutes every evening.

The children have all received the same spellings this week and their test will be on Friday. Please ensure you send in their spelling book every Friday as they will complete their test in the book. This allows you to keep track of which words they are still working on. Each spelling sheet will have boxes to practice the words each day. Please ensure you spend 10 minutes each night practising with your child.

After this week’s spelling test, the children will get spellings based on the RWI book they are reading in class. Their spellings will mostly consist of ‘red words’ (which are tricky to sound out) and ‘high frequency words’ (common words).  If we find that the children are not applying the words correctly in their writing, we may send the words home again.

Thank you for your continued support.
