Nursery Learning WC 9/2/26

This week’s learning has been centred around Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day. The children have shown a high level of interest in all things pancakes, enthusiastically engaging in imaginative play throughout the week. They enjoyed creating pretend playdough pancakes, carefully choosing ‘fruit’ toppings and exploring different textures. The children also took part in our pancake-making tuff tray, where they used pretend eggs, pans, spatulas and pancakes, developing their role-play skills, creativity and language as they acted out real-life cooking experiences.

To further enhance our Pancake Day provision, the children also had the opportunity to make, decorate and eat their own pancakes. Working in small groups, the children followed simple instructions to help make the batter, developing their listening and turn-taking skills. They then watched the adult cook the pancakes, observing each stage of the process and talking about the changes as the mixture cooked. Once the pancakes were ready, the children sat sensibly at the table and chose their own toppings from honey, raspberries, strawberries, banana and blueberries before enjoying their pancakes together — delicious!

At our maths table, the children practised counting aloud and matching objects to numerals, helping to develop their early number recognition. They were also encouraged to use mathematical language such as more and less when comparing quantities, building their confidence in understanding and talking about numbers.

The children have enjoyed making Valentine’s Day cards and decorations at our art table, using felt tip pens, paint dabbers, pink and red see-through plastic, and heart-shaped cut-outs. They particularly enjoyed exploring the see-through plastic, placing it over their eyes and observing how it changed the colour of everything in the classroom, sparking curiosity and lots of excited discussion.

The use of scissors has been a key interest this week, with the children practising how to safely hold paper in one hand while using the scissors with the other. They were provided with a range of animal pictures, giving them clear lines to follow and supporting the development of their cutting skills, hand–eye coordination and fine motor control.

Many thanks,

The Nursery Team
