Healthy Eating in the Nursery

This week is Healthy Eating week in school. We are always trying to promote healthy eating, the majority of our snacks are fruit and vegetables. Furthermore when cooking with the children we endeavour to include healthy options. Today the children enjoyed a snack consisting of a rice cakes, with toppings of their choice...they had a varied array of toppings to choose from; grapes, cucumber, tomatoes, raisins, banana. The children were encouraged to spread low fat cheese or margarine on their own rice cake and then decorate it with the toppings of their own choice. We encourage the children's independence skills at every opportunity.  By using the knife to spread, the children were developing their fine motor skills, they were also discussing the foods they liked and disliked, demonstrating reciprocity whilst conversing with their peers! By the end of this session all of the children had, had the opportunity to spread using a knife, make independent food choices and talk about the process. Tutu said "I like grapes they are 1 of my 5 a day".

Seaside Fun!

The great British weather did not deter Reception from a fun filled day of activities on the beach! The children have been busy treasure hunting, sandcastle building, beach combing, rock throwing, puddle hopping, and bus driving.

The spirt of the British public has been evident today, as we met a few friendly souls also braving the weather. The children were given ice lollies from the ice-cream van, gates were opened especially for us and David the bus driver even let the children sit in the drivers seat and open the doors. Everyone is heading home a little soggy but they have had a great day and they are all clutching a bag full of treasures from the beach!

Birthday Celebrations!

This afternoon the reception children celebrated the Queen's 90th Birthday. The children came to school dressed in red, white and blue and some even went the extra mile with a full face of Union Jack face paint (great effort Tyler!). This afternoon we enjoyed an afternoon tea party and enjoyed dancing to some British classics. The children were a little confused as why the Queen was not coming to the party (she is a very busy lady and there are lots of parties to attend) but enjoyed themselves anyway. Zara suggested that "we should go visit the queen in her castle sometime".

Working at the Car Wash!

The children have been working hard today at the new Early Years Car Wash. They have demonstrated lots of reciprocity as they assigned jobs and worked together to get all the bikes clean. The car wash provides the children excellent opportunities to develop their communication and language skills and well as PSED skills as they work together. "Next bike please" said Gabriela as she asked the next driver to come forwards at the washing station.

Riding the bikes, working in the car wash and writing the waiting list also helped children to develop their gross and fine motor skills. The children have enjoyed the car wash and are excited to play again in it tomorrow.

Reception Newsletter 13.6.16

Term:  Summer 2                          Date 13.6.16

This week we are focusing on the story 'Billy's Bucket' a story of a boy who is bought a magical bucket for his birthday. Within the bucket Billy can see a variety of magnificent sea creatures. It is a great way to introduce the children to marine life before our trip to the beach on Friday 17th June. Please remember the Reception doors will be open from 8.10am this Friday as we will need to be leaving the Reception classrooms at 8.25am. As Reception will not be in school for the queens birthday celebrations on Friday, EYFS will celebrate the queens birthday this Thursday. The children can wear red, white or blue.

Your child will be taking part in the following activities within the seven areas of development (activities are subject to change, depending on the children’s interests; however, the skills remain the same):

Personal, Social and Emotional:

• Encouraging children to work in small groups to discuss thinking and plan tasks together.

Communication and Language:

• Extending vocabulary, especially by grouping and naming, exploring the meaning and sounds of new words.
• Re-telling the story of 'Billy's Bucket' using props in the small world area. 

Physical Development

• Children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements.
• Learning how to correctly use hurdles.  
• Fine manipulative skills set up daily to improve children’s pencil control.

Literacy

• We will be continuing with our daily Read, Write Inc. groups.
• Writing our own descriptions of things the children would like to see in their own magical buckets.
• Creating warning posters to warn people of what can happen if you misuse a magical bucket!

Mathematics

• Revising the formation of 11-20,
• Focusing on addition and subtraction using number lines and counting on or back from a given numer.

Understanding of the World

• Talking about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another.

Expressive Arts and Design

• Children safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. 
• Sea themed pictures in the art area using salt and paint.
• Using tweezers to remove sparkly treasure from gel.

Due to of the volume of drink money being collected, distributed and organising the change for drinks is beginning to take away valuable teaching time.  We kindly request that if you would like your child to purchase a drink (30p each) that they bring in the correct money daily in a labelled purse, envelope or wallet, which can be kept in your child's tray.

Nursery Learning Challenge

Nursery Learning Challenge Summer 1

 Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning, this is in line with the rest of the school. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.

The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class however the table below details some ideas for the learning challenge.

Our final topic of the year is Traditional Tales.

 

We will be reading Goldilocks and the three bears and we will be singing various songs in preparation for our Graduation.

We are also now asking for the final £1 snack contribution.  Also please refrain from allowing your children to bring toys into school, unfortunately they get lost, broken or cause arguments.
