Woodwork in Nursery

The woodwork area has been a popular choice with the Nursery children. Both girls and boys have been excited to use a hammer and nail (under careful supervision) to create their own amazing designs. They had to concentrate really hard and showed great resilience when they found hammering the nails challenging at first. It encompasses creative thinking, maths skills, scientific investigation, physical development and coordination, developing language and vocabulary and much more. The children have enjoyed the challenge and been very proud of their creations.

Reception Star Readers

There were lots of Star Readers across Reception this week.

Congratulations to Summer Carruth, Lidia Catlin, Harry Cole, Zoe Middleton, John Owers from Apple class, who all received their Bookmark Reading Award for reading 10 books.

Congratulations to Oliver Dodd, Charlie Grant and Ehan Mollah from Aspen class, who all received their Bookmark Reading Award for reading 10 books.

Creating a love of reading in children is potentially one of the most powerful ways of improving academic standards in school. Please record your home reading in your Child's Reading Record. Please record all of your home reading including your Child's school storybook, green and red words which you have been practising together, RWI books and any additional books you have shared together. All of these reading sessions go towards the School Reading Awards.

Dear Parents,

      This week we will be reading the text ‘Room on the Broom’ and carrying out related tasks such as creating monsters, making fireworks out of paint and toasting marshmallows on a camp fire.

     The learning objectives:

Personal, Social and Emotional

Is more confident in new social situations.

Can usually adapt behaviour to different events, social situations and changes in routine.

Confident to talk to other children.

Communication and Language

Builds up vocabulary that reflects the breadth of their experiences.

       Learning Challenge

      Each half term we will be setting our pupils a challenge related to their learning. We believe that it is important for us to provide guidance for parents on how their children's learning can be extended at home.

      The learning challenge will include either a nursery rhyme, famous person,  illustration or a piece of music. Please talk to your child about the challenge and help them to engage in their learning. The children can choose how they present their learning challenge outcomes to their teacher or class.  The table below demonstrates some guidance.

Nursery Newsletter 6.11.17

The children enjoyed exploring pumpkins last week. They helped to scoop out the seeds, chop up the flesh and created some delicious pumpkin soup. Look at the blog for photos.
Thank you to Lily for sending in photos of her half term fun that she shared with her friends and teachers in Nursery. If you have any photos of the children's achievements, activities they have completed at home or fun days out please send them to eyfs@broadford.havering.sch.uk. 
This week is World Nursery Rhyme week. We will be teaching the children some of the focus Nursery rhymes such as 'Lavenders Blue', 'Wind the Bobin Up' and 'Bobby Shafto' to celebrate the importance of teaching children Nursery Rhymes. 
'If a child knows 8 nursery rhymes by heart by the time they are 4 years old, they are usually among the best readers and spellers in their class by the time they are 8'. (M. Fox, Reading Magic)

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week:

Mathematics

Supporting the children to recognise numbers in the environment.
On the maths table we have pegs and numbered spiders for the children to develop number recognition and 1:1 correspondence. 

Physical

Handles tools and objects carefully. 
In our PE sessions we will be teaching the children running games and encouraging them to change speed and direction. 

Literacy

At this stage of development mark making is a physical activity. We provide lots opportunities for the children to develop their shoulder, elbow and wrist control.

This the children will have paint brushes, powder paint and shaving foam available to create fire work inspired patterns. 

Snack
The children can chose to paint their bread with edible paint before toasting it this week to create a firework inspired snack. 

Communication and Language

Encouraging children to use simple sentences correctly.

Encouraging children to hold a conversation and respond to comments.

We will be sharing the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ and supporting the children to remember key events in the story.

Understanding of the World 
We have some fire work themed experiments the children can complete this week. We will be using food colouring mixed with oil, water and an effervescent tablet to create our own coloured reactions in bottles. 

Personal and Social Development

Ensuring children are able to co-operate with routines and some boundaries.

Modelling the correct behaviours in play, ensuring children use resources well and begin to share with other children.

Messages and Dates

On Thursday 16th November parents are invited for a Stay and Play session focused on Communication and Language and Storytelling. There will be a short presentation for parents and then you will be invited to join your children in the environment. Morning parents will be invited at 9.15 AM and Afternoon parents will be invited at 1.15 PM.

On Friday 8th of December the children and parents are invited back to school for a ‘Christmas Story session’. The children will help cook mince pies for the evening, hot chocolate will be served and the children will come back to school at 5pm to listen to some special christmas stories and sing some christmas songs.

The EYFS Nativity (Nursery and Reception) will be at 9.15 on December 12th for Morning Nursery Parents and 2.15PM on December 12th for Afternoon Nursery Parents.

Obstacle Fun!

On Friday we put away the bikes for the day and pulled out the games equipment. The children excitedly helped to build an obstacle course around the road and took much delight at completing it. The children took turns to start each participant and some children decided they would time the competitors. Finley chose to count how long the other children took to complete the course. In the afternoon the adults showed the children the stopwatch function on the iPads and they took turns timing each other. 

The obstacle course provided the children would a great experience to develop their physical and gross motor skills. It also involved lots of teamwork and turn taking as they cheered each other on. Next time we are going to record everyone's times and see if we can work out who was the fastest! 

Pumpkin Soup

After exploring the pumpkins and learning about how they grow the children used the pumpkin to create a delicious pumpkin soup. They cut the flesh of the pumpkin into small pieces along with carrots and onions (cut whilst wearing protective googles!). This was then put into the oven to roast before we added all of the ingredients to the slow cooker. After the pumpkin was soft we watched as the blender turned the soup into a smooth mixture and stirred in the cream. Lots of the children were willing to try the soup and some even asked for seconds!

Exploring Pumpkins in Nursery

The children enjoyed exploring the different sized pumpkins they found in Nursery this week. We watched a clip showing how pumpkins grow from tiny seeds. The children were surprised to see that pretty yellow flowers grow on pumpkin vines before the pumpkin begins to grow.
After this they were excited to cut them open and examine them more closely. They  helped to scoop the insides out of the pumpkins, used tweezers to take out the pumpkin seeds and finally used the pumpkin skins to hammer in our golf tees and develop hand-eye co-ordination. We found a use for all parts of pumpkins this week, look out for photos of our delicious pumpkin soup next...
