Gardening Gurus

As part of our summer term, we have been enjoying the topic of 'Growing and Changing'. We have been looking at growth and life cycles, working closely with plants and following the progress of beans becoming beanstalks! 

We read 'Jasper's Beanstalk', learning about what we need to do to nurture a bean into a beanstalk. We carefully planted and watered our beans, watching them grow on our classroom window sill. 

Over the weekend they grew so big, however, that we had to immediately transfer them into our new tyre gardening patches because they became all intertwined and started tangling up the windows like wild beanstalks!

We carefully transferred our potted beanstalks into the soil, digging little holes and then stringing the vines up the sticks to help them grow up towards the clouds just like 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.

We are now waiting to see what happens next, hopefully they keep growing and Foxy Loxy stays away from our lovely gardening project! 

Following all of the beanstalk administration, we then planted and repotted the fiery chilli plant from Flynn's Nanny and planted that alongside our beanstalks. We are very excited to watch the chillies grow too! We are keen gardeners in Reception and we are enthusiastic to observe the changes that occur over time!

Aspen campfire

Yesterday Aspen class had their campfire experience, toasting marshmallows with their parents. We were very lucky with the weather and very lucky to have so many adults join us. Even some of our babies tried a marshmallow! 

We try and incorporate as many outdoor experiences into our learning, gaining skills to help us with our own understanding of the world. 

We enjoy observing the changes that happen when we combine different elements - especially when we get to eat the results!

Nursery Newsletter 20.5.19

Dear Parent/Carer,

Thank you for coming to our Stay and Play sessions, it was clear the children really enjoyed showing the adults around their new Nursery!

Maths
We are learning to recognise number 7.

The children have lots of opportunities in the environment for counting, sorting and recognising numbers. In small groups this week we will be matching numeral to quantity.

Creative

We will be continuing with junk modelling this week and learning how to join materials.

Communication and Language 
We are listening to rhyming stories and playing lots of rhyming games. We are trying to hear the 'odd one out' in a rhyming string. 

Knowledge of the World
We will be watching to see the cress seeds start to grow and looking carefully at how they change.

Reception Newsletter 20.05.19

Term: Summer 1                          Date: 20.05.19

Dear Parents and Carers,

The weather held off for us and all three classes enjoyed their trip to Central Park. The children looked at the local environment on route and enjoyed playing with friends.

This week we will be reading 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and ‘The Bad Tempered Ladybird’ which were both written by Eric Carle. The children will be learning about the lifecycle of a caterpillar ready for our caterpillar arrivals next half term.

We will be having class campfires this week for each class. We invite parents/carers to join their child to sing some songs and toast marshmallows at the end of the day. The campfires will all start at 2.15pm.

Wednesday - Alder 

Looking forward to year one, we are going to begin encouraging the children to walk down the ramp independently to their classroom in the mornings. There is no rush to do this immediately, but only when you and your child feel they are ready. Staff will welcome the children as usual and support with choosing lunch or putting their things away if needed. Looking forward, we would hope most of the children will be able to achieve this by the end of the summer term.

Communication and Language
We are encouraging children to use talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events.

Physical Development
As we continue to develop the children’s fine motor strength we are now also focussing on their letter and number formation as well. Particularly encouraging and correcting backwards formed letters and numbers.

Maths
We will be looking at shape, space and measure this week in Maths. The children will recap positional language, weight, length and money.

Literacy
The children will be labelling the lifecycle of a caterpillar as well as creating and writing the sequel for The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Understanding the World
We will be caring for our beans and sunflowers and observing them grow over the next few weeks. The children will be looking at the lifecycle and changes of a caterpillar.

Aspen Park Trip

Today Aspen class went on their trip to Central Park. We were a little bit worried that the rain was going to pour down on us but luckily the clouds held it together until we got safely back to school

We were so fantastic at walking sensibly and listening to our grown-ups. We had checklists to observe our local surroundings, ticking off bus stops, zebra crossings and looking at some bird boxes.

When we got to the park we had a super time exploring all of the different apparatus and playing with our friends. 

We even had a delicious snack at the end, to refuel us for our uphill journey back to school. We will probably sleep very well tonight!

A big thank you to the parents who volunteered to join us today. Thank you for helping make our afternoon so successful!

Alder Class Visit Central Park!

This afternoon Alder Class embarked on their trip to Central Park! The children have been excited and ecstatic about their trip today and asking when are we going to the park all morning!!!! On route the children were keen Geographers as they looked at the local environment. The children took turns ticking off the items they saw on route on their checklist.



Quickly, we discussed a few rules to keep us safe when we arrived at the park, and the main rules to stay safe and have fun! The children had a fantastic time playing on the swings, slides and climbing frames. Everyone enjoyed a quick snack and drink, another play and then we were ready to walk back to school!
