Nursery Newsletter 1.4.19

Dear Parent/Carer,

We hope you all had a lovely Mother's day weekend and were able to spend some quality time with your children. This week is finally moving week! Please excuse any interruption to normal routines this week, furniture and resources will need to be gradually moved. We have lots of fun activities planned around this to minimise any disruption to children and plan to carry on as normal as much as possible.  We can't wait to let the children explore their lovely new classroom the following week.
 The Nursery will be closed on Friday 5th April to enable staff to safely move and position furniture and create a great environment for the children to come into on Monday. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thank you to parents who were able source some materials for  our upcycling projects, we have had lots of donations!  We are still looking for:

• Wooden cable reels
• Clean cot mattress
• Any unwanted wooden ornaments (e.g. animals figures etc.)

Maths

This week we are consolidating numbers previously taught and playing Maths bingo. The children will be encouraged to count small quantities together and match this to the numbers they have learnt. Please continue to support your children to count objects and spot shapes and numbers around you.


Communication and Language 
We will be using the outside environment this week and listening carefully to the sounds we can hear. The children will be encouraged to find natural objects that can make a sound together, e.g. 2 sticks to clank together or a handful of leaves to rub together. We will listen to each others sounds in small groups and try and play along to some group tunes. 

Knowledge of the World
We are sharing stories about mini beasts this week including The Very Busy Spider. After talking about the minibeasts and looking at evidence to check where we might find them the children will go on their own minibeast hunts in small groups. They will be encouraged to look closely at creatures and talk about similarities and differences.

Reception Newsletter 01.04.19

Term: Spring 2               Date: 01.04.19

Dear Parents and Carers,

Last week was a busy one, full of rescuing carrots, capturing peas and a lot of letter writing as well. We are continuing with ‘Supertato’ for a few more days as we make our own vegetable superheroes.

This week we will also begin reading ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson. The children will be searching for minibeasts and worms as well writing potions to defeat the evil lizard wizard.


Communication and Language
We are encouraging children to use talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events.

Physical Development
As we continue to develop the children’s fine motor strength we are now also focussing on their letter and number formation as well. Particularly encouraging and correcting backwards formed letters and numbers.

Maths
We are looking at time this week. We will be timing how long it takes us to tidy up, line up, get ready for home. Perhaps you could time things at home, how long it takes to brush your teeth, how long it takes to get dressed. We will be encouraging the children to use everyday language related to time as well as time short periods of time.

Literacy
We will be writing potions to help save Superworm and defeat the evil wizard lizard.

Expressive Arts and Design
The children will be designing and making their own vegetable superheroes from a range of vegetables and resources.

We are looking to make a family display in our home corner and would love a photo of your child and their family to display. WANTED: The Evil Pea

This week Reception have been reading 'Supertato'. We have LOVED this book, but it has come with some dramas. We have spent all week trying to un-meddle the mess of a particularly rotten vegetable: The Evil Pea. He has accidentally escaped the freezer and has been causing absolute chaos, kidnapping our carrots and leaving ransom notes and detective clues for us to unravel. 

Today, we came in from lunch and our classrooms were chaos again, this time they had been invaded by The Evil Peas cheeky minions and the place was rolling in escapeas! We decided that, once and for all, enough is enough! We were not going to take any more of his funny business. 

We set out to capture The Evil Pea and his green gang so that we could lock them all up in Jelly Jail!

We made 'wanted' posters, so that everyone can help us track down this Evil Pea, using our phonic knowledge to describe what he looks like. We had lots of great ideas about how we will conquer this wicked vegetable and we feel quite confident that this pesky pea won't be bothering us any time soon!

We successfully captured our Evil Peas for the Jelly Jail, and we put their pesky pea leader on Sad Face. 

My goodness, are we pleased to see the back of that pea!

And, if the Evil Pea does come back, SuperDom will be here to protect us from any future pea invasion!

Kidnapped Carrots!

The Reception children returned from lunch to find a letter and photograph from The Evil Pea. The carrots had been kidnapped, gasp! The children used their phonics knowledge to read the letter and were also able to correctly read the red words. They then set off to rescue the carrots from around the setting. 

After safely rescuing all of the carrots, the children settled down to listen to our story of the week, Supertato! This afternoon lots of the children wrote letters back to The Evil Pea, inspired by the exciting start to the afternoon. The children focused on using their Fred fingers to help when segmenting words as well as using their finger spaces. I wonder if The Evil Pea will reply?!

Nursery Newsletter 25.3.19

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are very excited to finally be able to move into our new building on Monday the 8th April. The building looks fantastic and we can't wait to let the children explore their new environment and make lots of fantastic memories in their last term of Nursery. This means the Nursery will be closed to children on Friday 5th April. This is to allow staff to safely move and position furniture and create a great environment for the children to come into on Monday. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Our story this week is 'Alan's Big Scary Teeth'. A story of a crocodile who prowls the jungle ready to scare the other animals in the day but who loves nothing better to take a bath and remove his false teeth. That is until his teeth go missing! The children's listening skills and understanding are really improving and they are able to follow stories with more complex plots now. We will be talking about the characters in the story and making some posters to help Alan find his false teeth!

This week we are learning the Nursery rhymes 'Elephant's have wrinkles' and 'Hey Diddle Diddle.'

Maths

Our number of the week is number 6. We will be learning the Ten Town song for the number and the children will have lots of opportunities to develop number recognition and counting skills in all areas of our learning environment. The children have magnetic fishing rods to hunt for the numbered fish in the Tuff Tray this week. They have then been sorting them into the correct bowls.  

Communication and Language  

This week we are continuing to focus on syllables. These are the large chunks you can break words into which are sometimes referred to as the 'beats' of spoken language. The word cat has one syllable the word purple has two (pur and ple). We will be playing lots of games to support the children to understand this.
We are also encouraging the children to follow conversations and respond back to comments made by other children and adults.

Malleable

We have added cupcakes, gems and sticks to enhance children's baking play.

Creative
The children are completing collages for a Mother's Day gift. They have also been enjoy using chunky felt tips to create their own drawings. We are modelling the correct pencil grip to the children and are encouraging them to add details to their drawings, hopefully you will notice faces have eyes, noses, hair and even eye lashes on occasion now!

Water
The children have hand pumps, soap and sponges to explore different ways of moving water.

Snack
This week we are making jelly in groups. The children will see how the cooking process changes the jelly. They also have a variety of fruit they can cut and add to their jelly cups before the mixture sets.

Nursery - Help our upcycling projects!

We are very excited to shortly be able to move into our new purpose built Nursery. As we will have lots of space to create lovely new areas for the children there are a few items we are looking to source for upcycling projects. If you think you can help please speak to a member of the team.
