Queens Hospital Visit

A small group of year 5 children went on a visit to Queens Hospital today to meet with a cardiologist named Dr Andrew Deaner. Our aim was to discuss his role and to find out the steps he had to take to become a doctor.

Dr Andrew Deaner is the cardiologist who ran on the football pitch to save Fabrice Muamba's life. Andrew showed the children a pacemaker and explained to them how it works. The children all had an opportunity to look at scans of different parts of the body and to look through a microscope to look at a sample of blood where they were able to see the palette cells. Palette cells come together to form a clot or a scab when you cut yourself.

Whilst we were at the hospital the children also had an opportunity to meet with a senior nurse to discuss her role, a physiotherapist to see what their job entailed and an occupational therapist.

At the end of the session Dr Andrew Deaner showed the children how to carry out CPR and the children were able to have a go for themselves.

I think we definitely have some budding scientists in Year  5!
