Reading at Home

We love to see you reading at home, thank you to all of you who complete the book reviews.  Research shows that children who are read to in those early years, are statistically better readers at the age of 15 and therefore do better in their GCSE's.

More of Scott the Paramedic

The afternoon children also had a visit from Scott the paramedic. He talked about his ambulance and some of his other equipment such as his stethoscope some of the children got an opportunity to try out the equipment.

Letter Formation

These resources can support you to ensure the children are forming their letters correctly if they are writing at home. Each sound has a phrase to help the children to remember how to form the sound when they write it.

Here is a guide on how to teach a sound:

Reception Newsletter 21.3.16

Reception Newsletter 21.3.16

The Reception team were very proud of how the children performed in our sharing assembly last week. It was a great opportunity to show how well their communication skills have progressed throughout the year. Well done Reception!

This week we will be focusing on Easter themed activities. The children will be making chocolate Easter nests and writing letters to the fluffy Easter bunny who has come to stay with us for the week.

The term will finish on Thursday and there will be no clubs this week. We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable Easter break.

These are the skills we will be focusing on this week;

Personal, Social and Emotional:
Encouraging children to negotiate and solve problems without aggression e.g. when someone has taken their toy.
In the maths area we are introducing games such as snakes and ladders, simple addition dice games and dominoes to encourage the children to share and take turns.

Communication and Language:
Modelling extending sentences encouraging children to explain their reasoning.
Extending vocabulary, especially by grouping and naming, exploring the meaning and sounds of new words.

Physical Development:
Ensuring the children use the correct pencil grip.
Ensuring letters are correctly formed.

Literacy:
Encouraging the children to use their phonics in their play and write simple captions.
Ensuring they are able to segment words for spelling and modelling the use of 'fred fingers' to support this.
Writing letters to the Easter bunny.

Mathematics:
Consolidating knowledge of more and less.
Ordering numbers to 20.

Understanding of the World:
Looking at similarities, differences, patterns and change.
The children will be able to explore plants in the tuff tray using tools and magnifying glass and look closely at the different parts e.g. roots, leaves etc.
In the water area we have included flowers so they can pull apart the petals and examine them closely.
In the sand tray there will be onions, sprouts, seeds and soil for the children to investigate.

Expressive Arts and Design:
Introducing a story line or narrative into their group play.
Manipulating materials to achieve a planned effect.
Painting pictures of the real tulips on the art table.

Due to of the volume of drink money being collected, distributed and organising the change for drinks is beginning to take away valuable teaching time.  We kindly request that if you would like your child to purchase a drink (30p each) that they bring in the correct money daily in a labelled purse, envelope or wallet, which can be kept in your child's tray.

Thank you for your continued support.

Writing in Reception

The children have been using their fred fingers to sound out words and working really hard to ensure they remember to form their letters correctly. Take a look at some of the great captions related to our topic this week.

Learning Challenge Aspen

Well done to Peter and Blake for completing the half terms learning challenge. Peter has researched Mr Bloom and created a great fact poster whilst Blake has used his artistic skills to create a fantastic Eric Carle inspired poster.

Creating a Herb Garden

Outside the children helped to create a herb garden in Aspen's flower bed today. First they used their senses to explore the scent and taste of the herbs then carefully planted them and finally created labels so we could identify the plants easily.

In the sand area they were able to investigate real daffodils. They looked carefully at the roots and the bulbs and then used their imaginations to create their own flower shop!

We are looking forward to sowing herb seeds tomorrow and adding sunflowers to Apple's flower bed.

Nursery Newsletter 14.03.16

Term:  Spring 2                          Date 14.03.16

It was great to have a visit from PC Hopkins last week; we hope you had a chance to look at the photos.  This week we are looking forward to a visit from a paramedic, we will keep you posted.  We will be reading ‘The Doctor’ and singing ‘Doctor Foster’ and ‘Miss Polly had a dolly’.

We will continue with the teaching of phonics, we will teach ‘o’ next.  As always we are playing all kinds of phonological awareness games, to promote the teaching of phonics in an appropriate way for children of this young age.  However we love to see the way the children are using the role play areas and small worlds.  The benefits of these areas are endless.  These areas give the children an opportunity to use their imagination, and opportunities to figure out how the world works and then create their own worlds.  Pretend play also allows them to take on different roles, get creative and express themselves.

  • Can usually manage washing and drying hands.
Mathematics

  • Shows understanding of prepositions such as 'under', 'on top', 'behind' by carrying out an action or selecting correct picture.
  • Anticipates specific time-based events such as mealtimes or home time.
  • Understands some talk about immediate past and future, e.g. 'before', 'later' or 'soon'.
  • Creates and experiments with symbols and marks representing ideas of number.
Understanding of the World

  • Remembers and talks about significant events in their own experience.
  • Notices detailed features of objects in their environment.

Doctor Foster
Went to Gloucester
In a shower of rain.
He stepped in a puddle
Right up to his middle
And never went there again!

Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick.
So she phoned for the doctor to be quick, quick, quick.
The doctor came with his bag and his hat
And he knocked at the door with a rat-a-tat-tat.
He looked at the dolly and he shook his head
And he said “Miss Polly, put her straight to bed!”
He wrote on a paper for a pill, pill, pill
“I’ll be back in the morning yes I will, will, will.”

Finger Gym

The children loved the new finger gym activity. They had to match the keys to correct locks, looking for matching numerals. This is a great tool for number recognition and also gives the children a chance to strengthen their finger muscles.
